We have designed and developed novel luminescent lanthanide complexes for advanced photonics applications. Lanthanide(III) ions (Ln$^{3+}$) were encapsulated by the luminescent ligands such as metalloporphyrins and naphthalenes. The energy levels of the luminescent ligands were tailored to maintain the effective energy transfer process from luminescent ligands to Ln$^{3+}$ ions for getting a higher optical amplification gain. Also, key parameters for emission enhancement and efficient energy transfer pathways for the sensitization of Ln$^{3+}$ ions by luminescent ligands were investigated. Furthermore, to enhance the optophysical properties of novel luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes, aryl ether-functionalized dendrons as photon antennas have been incorporated into luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes, yielding novel Ln(III)-cored dendrimer complex. The novel Ln(III)-cored dendrimer complex has much higher PL intensity than the corresponding simple complex, due to the efficient site-isolation effect. In this article, we will deal with recent progress in the synthesis and photophysical studies of inert and stable luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes for advanced photonics applications. Also, our review will include the exploratory investigation of the key parameters for emission enhancement and the effective energy transfer pathways from luminescent ligands to Ln$^{3+}$ ions with Ln(III)-chelated prototype complexes.
NiTi alloy has been used for orthodontic wire due to good mechanical properties, such as elastic strength and frictional resistance, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. Recently, these wire were coated by polymer and ceramic materials for aesthetics. The purpose of this study was to investigate surface characteristics of polymer coated NiTi alloy wire for orthodontics using various instruments. Wires (round type and rectangular type) were used, respectively, for experiment. Polymer coating was carried out for wire. Specimen was investigated with field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDS) and atomic force microscopy(AFM). The phase transformation of non-coated NiTi wire from martensite to austenite occurred at the range of $14{\sim}15^{\circ}C$, in the case of coated wire, it occurred at the range of $16{\sim}18^{\circ}C$. Polymer coating on NiTi wire surface decreased the surface defects such as scratch which was formed at severe machined surface. From the AFM results, the average surface roughness of non-coated and coated NiTi wire was 13.1 nm, and 224.5 nm, respectively. From convetional surface roughness test, the average surface roughness of non-coated and coated NiTi wire was $0.046{\mu}m$, and $0.718{\mu}m$, respectively.

Considering the number of chemosensors that have been developed for the sensing of metal ions, only a few chemosensors for fluoride anion have been described in the literature that are based on fluorescent or chromogenic responses. We performed colorimetric anion sensing based on the binding of anion analytes with hydrogen donor group in polymer backbone resulting in naked-eye color change and fluorescent quenching. Our challenges using hydrogen donor moiety was designed effectively are continuing in order for high selectivity and sensitivity for ultimate applications such as fluid solution sensing in biomolecules and gas vapor sensing.
The interconnection mechanisms of a smart anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) during processing have been characterized. For an understanding of chemorheological mechanisms between the fluxing polymer and solder powder, a thermal analysis as well as solder wetting and coalescence experiments were conducted. The compatibility between the viscosity of the fluxing polymer and melting temperature of solder was characterized to optimize the processing cycle. A fluxing agent was also used to remove the oxide layer performed on the surface of the solder. Based on these chemorheological phenomena of the fluxing polymer and solder, an optimum polymer system and its processing cycle were designed for high performance and reliability in an electrical interconnection system. In the present research, a bonding mechanism of the smart ACA with a polymer spacer ball to control the gap between both substrates is newly proposed and investigated. The solder powder was used as a conductive material instead of polymer-based spherical conductive particles in a conventional anisotropic conductive film.
We synthesized a poly[2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl) benzoxazole] under the two step procedures of Suzuki coupling polymerization with corresponding monomers followed by the deprotection of benzyl group. The polymer in DMF solution is applicable to colorimetric sensing fluoride anion, which shows a color change from colorless to yellow. High sensitivity to fluoride anion compared to other anions such as phosphate, chloride, and sulfate is ascribed to the high coordination ability of the 2-(2'-hydroxy phenyl)benzoxazole moiety in the polymer chain. Emission shift by metal cations, which can be applied to fluorescent sensing w as also observed in the polymer solution.
Molecular mechanics technique has been used for finding energy-minimized conformation to understand the mechanism of yielding of glassy polymers in atomistic level. As a model polymer, amor- phous isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was generated by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods. The stress-strain cone was successfully obtained by using molecular mechanics technique. The torsional angle distribution showed no significant change during extension, although the torsional angles of certain bonds in polymer backbone changed more largely than other bonds. No significant change in the van der Waals interaction is observed at yielding point, whereas the torsional angle energy starts to decrease at yield strain.
Silk polymer has been focused recently on medical applications as a novel biomaterials. The factors for biomaterials were considered and reviewed recent research on surgical suture, wound dressing, tympanic regeneration patch, guided bone regeneration membrane, bone implant and ligament. Silk polymer is good mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Therefore it might be used as one of promising materials for medical application.
Electrospinning is a technique that produces sub-micron sized continuous fibers by electric force from polymer solutions or melts. Due to its versatile manufacturability and the cost effectiveness, this method has been recently adopted for the fabrication of one-dimensional materials. Here, we fabricated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer fibers, from which uniform carbon fibers with diameters of 100-200 nm were obtained after carbonization at 800 $^{\circ}C$ in N$_2$. Special emphasis was directed to the influence of the phase separated polymer solution on the morphology and the microstructure of the resulting carbon fiber. The addition of poly(stylene-co-acrylonitile) (SAN) makes the polymer solution phase separated, which allows for the formation of internal pores by its selective elimination after electrospinning. XPS and Raman Spectroscopy were used to confirm the surface composition and the degree of carbonization. At the PAN:SAN = 50:50 in vol%, the uniform carbon fibers with diameters of 300$\sim$500 nm and surface area of 131.6 m$^2$g$^{-1}$ were obtained.

A fluorescing, copolymer(Q)-bearing, quaternary ammonium pendant was mixed with excess natural salmon sperm DNA with a molecular weight of $1.3{\times}10^6$(2,000 base pairs) to afford highly fluorescing, complex mixtures. The fluorescence life-time of the polymer Q was greatly increased when mixed with DNA: for the mixture of Q:DNA=1:750 the fast and slow decay lifetimes increased from ca. 10 to 100 ps and from 20 ps to ca. 1 ns, respectively. The enhanced fluorescence of the mixtures was ascribed to efficient compartmentalization and reduced conformational relaxation of the polymer Q by complexation with excess DNA.
