  • Applying force-distance curve measurement by atomic force microscopy to a theoretical mechanical model gives us elastic properties of polymer surfaces. Our group focuses on force-mapping method, in which force-distance curve is performed at each lattice point on a sample surface and subsequently a variety of properties derived from analytical results are combined to construct a 2-dimensional image. With this method we succeeded in deriving Young' s modulus distribution map method of rubbery/rubbery polymer blend surfaces with ${\sim}100\;nm$ lateral resolution. We also applied force-mapping method to another theory to divide distribution of hardness from that of adhesion. We will demonstrate recent progress.

  • The recent advances and popularity of 3D printing technology have centered around building polymerbased 'plastic' materials, due to their low cost, simple and efficient processing, and mechanical toughness. For this reason, printable polymers are actively recruited to create 'ceramic resins' that allow more facile fabrication of ceramic materials that are difficult to print directly. Herein, a brief history and the current state of ceramic 3D printing technology aided by polymer is summarized. In addition, a new ceramic 3D printing technology using polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) is also introduced.

  • In this paper, the polymer concrete using the chemically treated waste paint and polystyrene foam was manufactured and their mechanical properties were evaluated. The compressive strength, specific gravity and water absorption with respect to the volume percents of the waste paint and resin were tested. From the tests, the specific gravities of the polymer concretes using the waste paint were lower than that of the conventional polymer concrete and it was recommended that they can be used for building exterior materials.

  • Organic/inorganic hybrid membranes have been prepared and evaluated as polymer electrolytes in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Previously, partially fluorinated poly (arylenether) was synthesized and the polymer was sulfonated by fuming sulfuric acid$(30\%\;SO_3)$. Modification of these polymers with coupling agent and inorganic materials was carried out to prepare membranes. Membranes cast from these materials were investigated in relation to the proton conductivity and weight loss at the room temperature. It was found that these membranes had a higher conductivity of $10^{-2}\;Scm^{-1}$ at the room temperature. But inorganic materials have leaked out from the hybrid membrane. If this problem is resolved, organic/inorganic hybrid membranes will become satisfactory Polymer electrolytes for the PEMFC.

  • Four different polymer compounds were prepared from four kinds of plasticizers, viz. di-2-ethylhexyl azelate (DOZ), di-2-ethylhexyl adipate (DOA), di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate (DOS), and di-2-butyl sebacate (DBS), for making cable sheaths for ships. Ethylene-vinyl acetate and ethylene-propylene-diene-copolymer as matrix polymers and ethylene-vinyl acetate grafted maleic anhydride as a coupling agent were compounded with a flame retardant, crosslinking agent, filler, and other additives, besides the plasticizer to obtain the polymer compounds. The polymer containing DOZ showed the highest MH and ${\Delta}T$ in the rheology test, while that containing DBS was found to have the lowest tensile strength and highest elongation because of low ${\Delta}T$. The four polymers showed similar values (31.7-31.9) for flame resistance, while the polymer containing DOZ showed the highest value for cold resistance.

  • Since PVDF/poly(1,4-butylene adipate) blend shows much lower LCST curve compared with PVDF/PMMA blend, the PVDF/PBA blend can be a good candidate for investigating the effect of the electric field on the phase separation and dissolution behavior of an electro-active polymer and electro-inactive polymer blend. • Considerable efforts are still being made in the every part of the world to develop new construction materials. The polymer concrete is one of those promising new construction materials. The strength characteristics of fiber-reinforced polymer methods and filler contents on the properties of polymer concrete were explored. The effects of fiber addition are also discussed.

  • The use of soft-lithography instead of standard photolithography and dry etching technologies is attractive because inexpensive optical device can be realized. Polymerization using multi-photon absorption of materials is also a good method for optical waveguide fabrication. Laser induced self-writing technology of optical waveguide is also very simple and attractive. Using these processes, we can fabricate and interconnect optical circuits at once. In this presentation, several simple fabrication methods will be introduced. New optical loss evaluation method for polymer optical waveguides will also be presented

  • Proton-conducting hybrid materials composed of silica and Nafion polymer were prepared from the sol-gel synthesis of silica in aqueous Nafion solution. The compositions of hybrid proton conductors were adjusted with the changing ratios of tetraethyl orthosilicate to Nafion. The thermal analysis, FTIR, SEM, and X-ray diffraction studies have proved the formation of Nafion/silica hybrid materials and no remarkable phase separation was observed, which led to an assumption that the macromolecular chain of silica and Nafion was homogeneously interlaned.
