  • Poly(crown ether)s as a functional polymer materials have powerful and selective complexation properties with a large number of metal cations and have advantage of facility of their recovery and modification of their complexation properties in contrast to their monomeric analogues. Poly(crown ether)s having pendant macrocyclic groups can easily form 2:1-type crown ether ring-to-cation complexes with particular metal ions which are a little larger than the cavity of the crown ether ring. Preparation of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Using Photocross-linkable Polyphosphazene and Selective Rebinding of Amino Acids

  • A photocrosslinkable polyphosphazene was used for molecular imprinting. We synthesized polyphosphazene (3) having urea groups for complexation with N-carbobenzyloxyglycin (Z-Gly-OH, template) and chalcone groups for cross-linking reaction. As substituents, 4-hydroxycha1cone (1) and N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-N'-ethylurea (2) were prepared. Choloro groups of poly(dichlorophosphazene) were replaced by the sequential treatment with sodium salts of compounds 1 and 2, and trifluoroethanol. The template molecule was complexed with the urea groups on the polymer chains via hydrogen bonding. A thin polymer film was prepared by casting a solution of the complex of polymer 3 and the template in dimethylformamide on a quartz cell and irradiated with 365 nm UV light to yield a cross-linked film with a thickness of about $16{\mu}m$. The template molecules in the film were removed by Soxhlet extraction with methanol/acetic acid. The control polymer film was prepared in the same manner for the preparation of the imprinted polymer film, except that the template and triethylamine were omitted. In the rebinding test, the imprinted film exhibited much higher recognition ability for the template than the control polymer. We also investigated the specific recognition ability of the imprinted polymer for the template and its structural analogues. The rebinding tests were conducted using Z-Glu-OH, Z-Asp($O^tBu$)-OH, and Z-Glu-OMe. The imprinted film showed higher specific recognition ability for the template and the lowest response for Z-Asp($O^tBu$)-OH.

Preparation and Characterization of Cisplatin-Incorporated Chitosan Hydrogels, Microparticles, and Nanoparticles

  • Three different, polymer-platinum conjugates (hydrogels, microparticles, and nanoparticles) were synthesized by complexation of cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II) (cisplatin) with partially succinylated glycol chitbsan (PSGC). Succinic anhydride was used as a linker to introduce cisplatin to glycol chitosan (GC). Succinylation of GC was investigated systematically as a function of the molar ratio of succinic anhydride to glucosamine, the methanol content in the reaction media, and the reaction temperature. By controlling the reaction conditions, water-soluble, partially water-soluble, and hydrogel-forming PSGCs were synthesized, and then conjugated with cisplatin. The complexation of cisplatin with water-soluble PSGC via a ligand exchange reaction of platinum from chloride to the carboxylates induced the formation of nano-sized aggregates in aqueous media. The hydrodynamic diameters of PSGC/cisplatin complex nano-aggregates, as determined by light scattering, were 180-300 nm and the critical aggregation concentrations (CACs), as determined by a fluorescence technique using pyrene as a probe, were $20-30{\mu}g/mL$. The conjugation of cisplatin with partially water-soluble PSGC, i.e., borderline between water-soluble and water-insoluble PSGC, produced micro-sized particles $<500{\mu}m$. Cisplatin-complexed PSGC hydrogels were prepared from water-insoluble PSGCs. All of the cisplatin-incorporated, polymer matrices released platinum in a sustained manner without any significant initial burst, suggesting that they may all be useful as slow release systems for cisplatin. The release rate of platinum increased with the morphology changes from hydrogel through microparticle to nanoparticle systems.

  • A novel biomaterial capable of incorporating biotinylated biomolecule has been synthesized. Our strategy is to biotinylate one-dimensional electroactive polymers and use a bridging streptavidin protein on Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) organized films. These copolymers are derivatized with long alkyl chains and biotin moieties to bind, respectively, to the hydrophobic surface and the biotinylated species, through the biotin and streptavidin complexation. We utilize the polymer assembly approach to attach a signal transducing biomolecule biotinylated phycoerythrin (B-PE) into this novel biomaterial by binding the unoccupied biotin binding sites on the bound streptavidin (4 sites total). The pressure-area isotherm of the protein injected monolayer showed area expansion. A characteristic fluorescent emission peak at 576nm was detected from the monolayer transferred onto a solid substrate. These observations demonstrated the promise of the organized thin polymer assemblies for their application to the sensor system.

  • Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) were synthesized via radical polymerization of PMAA and simultaneous crosslinking of PEO using triisocyanate. The equilibrium swelling of PEO-PMAA IPN was determined at different pHs. The swelling of PEO-PMAA IPN, ranged from 20% to 90%, was more sensitive than that of homo polymer PMAA gel This is probably due to protonation and deprotonation of the PMAA network and interpolymer complex formation between PEO and PMAA. Several model drugs were loaded into the IPN matrices and the release mechanisms were investigated. The release of nonionizable drugs such as ftorafur and prednisolone was controlled by swelling of the matrices. However, he release of propranolol, positively charged drug, was more affected by the ionic interaction between the drug and PMAA newtork, and the interpolymer complexation.

  • The use of preformed polymers and their cross-linking have been a attempted in order to improve the intrinsic fraqility of monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB)films and to make their technological applications possible. It has shown that an imidization followed a polyion-complexation can stabilize the LB films against heat and solvents. And when the polymer structure was properly designed concurrent removal of the alkyl tails together with imide formation could be accomplished. In this paper we present a characteristic monolayer behavior of polymer with pendent polythers and carboxyls it’s polyion-complexed LB film with subphase polymer PAA and a possible skeletonization of the LB film by thermal imidization.   • Using poly(3-methylthiophene) conducting polymer film electrodes, feasiblity for Ag determination by stripping voltammetry has been studied. Ag ions accumulated by complexation with 18-crown-6, which are existing on the surface of the polymer film electrode, migrate inside of polymer film through potential scanning within limited potential range, and then are reduced and oxidized on the glassy carbon substrate. Therefore, the polymer film must have proper thickness and porosity for easy penetration of Ag ions. On the basis of these experimental results, $5.0{\times}10^{-6}M$ Ag(I) in aqueous solution could be determined.

  • In this work, silver nitrate complexes of sulfanilamide-5-methyl-2-thiophene carboxaldehyde (SMTCA) ligand intercalated Zn/Al-layered double hydroxide [Ag-SMTCA-LDH] were synthesized for the potential application as an antimicrobial system. The SMTCA ligand was synthesized by reacting sulfanilamide and 5-methyl-2-thiophene carboxaldehyde in methanol and further complexation with silver nitrate metal ions [Ag-SMTCA]. The structural analyses of synthesized compounds confirmed an intercalation of Ag-SMTCA into Zn/Al-NO3-LDH by flake/restacking method. SMTCA, Ag-SMTCA and Ag-SMTCA-LDH were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that Ag-SMTCA-LDH exhibited good antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, [B. subtilis], Staphylococcus aures, [S. aureus]) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli, [E. coli], Pseudomonas aeruginosa [P. aeroginosa]) bacteria as well as excellent antioxidant activity.

Changes in Facilitated Transport Behavior of Silver Polymer Electrolytes by UV Irradiation

  • Silver species other than the silver ion were formed by UV irradiation on polymer electrolyte membranes containing silver salts and their effect on complexation behavior between the silver and olefin was investigated through the separation performance of olefin/paraffin mixtures. The ideal propylene/propane separation factor reached 350 and the separation coefficient was ca.15 due to the high loading amount of silver ions into poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (POZ) without UV irradiation. On UV irradiation either in air or under nitrogen, the silver-POZ membranes became yellow-brown initially due to the formation of colloidal silver particles, and finally black and metal-like luster. Even when Ag$^{+}$ was converted, to some extent, to Ag$^{\circ}$ by UV irradiation in air at the early stage, the separation coefficient of olefin/paraffin mixtures was maintained. This suggests that silver species other than the silver ion is active for olefin carrier for facilitated transport. Meanwhile the steady decrease of the separation coefficient was observed in the silver/POZ membranes irradiated under $N_2$. It is suggested that the reduction of silver ions in POZ goes through a different photoreduction mechanism with UV irradiation depending on the environment.t.
