  • Surface modified nanofillers are often used as curative-cum reinforcing agents for functional polymers. The polymer nanofiller interaction depends on the curative systems used. In the present study the carboxylic group of the carboxylated nitrile elastomer participated in the reaction with Zn-ion coated nanosilica filler producing a type of ionomeric elastomer. The interaction at the molecular level thus produced a high modulus vulcanizate. In this case, the S and MBT system, as curative, had an edge over the MDA and DPG curative system. Interfacial adhesion was enhanced in the presence of Zn-ion-coated nanosilica filler associated with dynamic mechanical behavior. The inferior properties obtained in the case of the MDA and DPG curative system were due to the decreased reactivity of the silica surface, thus reducing interfacial adhesion.

  • In this paper, we study the distribution of surface charge density on polymer insulators. The electric field of polymer insulators is calculated by axisymetric 3-D FEM with dc source. And the surface charge density is calculated by electric scalar potential and boundary condition for electrostatic fields. Simulation model is the inclined type polymer insulator with a shed.

  • Surface states of silicone polymer treated by plasma were investigated by the analysis by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and surface voltage decay. Plasma treatment causes the silica-like oxidative layer, which is confirmed with XPS, and lowers surface resistivity with increasing the plasma treatment time. Using the decay time constant of surface voltage, the calculated surface resistivity was compared with the value directly measured by a voltage-current method. A good agreement between two methods was obtained. In addition, we estimated the thermal activation energy for surface conduction, Based on our results, we could understand the relationship between surface chemical states and surface electrical properties.

  • Nano-crystalline Si thin films were deposited on polymer and glass by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) - assisted RF magnetron sputtering at low temperature in an argon and hydrogen atmosphere. Internal ICP coil was installed to increase hydrogen atoms dissociated by the induced magnetic field near the inlet of the working gases. The microstructure of deposited films was investigated with XRD, Raman spectroscopy and TEM. The crystalline volume fraction of the deposited films on polymer was about 70% at magnetron RF power of 600W and ICP RF power of 500W. Crystalline volume fraction was decreased slightly with increasing magnetron RF power due to thermal damage by ion bombardment. The diffraction peak consists of two peaks at $28.18^{\circ}$ and $47.10^{\circ}\;2{\theta}$ at magnetron RF power of 600W and ICP RF power of 500W, which correspond to the (111), (220) planes of crystalline Si, respectively. As magnetron power increase, (220) peak disappeared and a dominant diffraction plane was (111). In case of deposited films on glass, the diffraction peak consists of three peaks, which correspond to the (111), (220) and (311). As the substrate temperature increase, dominant diffraction plane was (220) and the thickness of incubation (amorphous) layer was decreased.

  • We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on the two kinds of polyimide (PI) surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The NLC pretilt angles generated on thin plastic substrates are higher than that on the glass substrate. We study that AFM (atomic force microscope) image of rubbed PI surface with polymer film has formed the micro-groove. Also, EO characteristics of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer are almost the same as that of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on glass.

  • Two different reactive silicone oligomers, hydroxylpropyl terminated PDMS (PDMS-L) and 1-(2,3-dihydroxy-propoxy)propyl terminated PDMS (PDMS-B), were synthesized through hydrosilylation reaction under Karstedt's catalyst. Using the reactive silicone oligomers, two different silicone-modified gel-coat series were prepared to investigate their thermal and mechanical properties as well as surface characteristics according to reactive silicone oligomer contents. In case of thermal stabilities and mechanical properties, the gel-coat series containing PDMS-B showed higher values than that of the gel-coat series containing the PDMS-L. The contact angle for the gel-coat containing both silicone oligomers/was increased with reactive silicone oligomer contents but there was similar surface tension between PDMS-L and PDMS-B.

  • The effect of modification conditions on the physical properties of polydimethyl siloxane modified epoxy (PDMSME) was investigated. The number of ring opened epoxy attached to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by silane coupling agent affected the physical properties of undercoating materials. The flexibility of thin coating was enhanced by PDMSME and the increase of ring opened epoxy attached to PDMS resulted in the increase of hardness by the crosslinking in the present with moisture. The higher molecular weight of PDMS caused the lowering of hardness while the surface contact angle increased due to the high silicone content in PDMS. The viscosity of silicone modified epoxy coating materials decreased with increasing of molecular weight of PDMS due to the lowering of entanglement of PDMSME molecules by acetone solvent and consequently, the smooth undercoated surface was obtained.
