Synthesis of Polyimide Derived from 4-Methyl-1,2-phenylene Bis(4-aminobenzoate) and 4,4'-Hexafluoroisopropylidenediphthalic Anhydride

  • Aromatic diamine containing ortho catenation and methyl group was synthesized from 4-methyl catechol and 4-nitrobenzoyl chloride. Subsequently, a poly(amic acid) was prepared by reacting 4-methyl-1,2-phenylene bis(4-aminobenzoate) with 4,4'-hexafluoroisopropylidenediphthalic anhydride (6FDA). The resulting poly(amic acid) was transformed into a polyimide through chemical imidization. The polyimide formed was soluble in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and could be cast into a flexible, transparent film. Furthermore, the polyimide exhibited a 5% weight loss at 380 ℃ in the nitrogen atmosphere.

  • Calix[4]crown-6-2,4-bis(4-aminobutyl ether), which has a crown-6 moiety at the 1,3-position and amino function at the 2,4-position, was prepared as an intermediate for the subsequent synthesis of calix[4]crown-6-containing polyamide and polyimide using adipoyl chloride and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride. The chemical structures were characterized by IR, $^{1}H NMR$ spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and some of their physical properties, including their thermal behavior, were examined. The ion binding characteristics of the monomer and polymers for alkali metal and alkali earth metal ions were measured by liquid-liquid extraction from the aqueous phase into the organic phase. It has been observed that polyamide has a high binding ability towards various metal cations as compared to polyimide, which showed cesium ion selectivity.

  • Polyimides are one of the most important classes of highperformance polymers. Due to their excellent electriccal, thermal, and high-temperature mechanical properties. The polyimide and its derivatives have found many applications. But their uses are limited by their poor solubilities. In fact, most polyimides were processed in the form of their precursors, polyamic acid, which were subsequently converted to the imide structure.

  • Oragnic/inorganic hybrid materials prepared by sol-gel method have rapidly become a fasci nating research field in materials science. In this study, Polyimide/$\textrm{TiO}_2$ composites were synthesized from nano-sized anatase $\textrm{TiO}_2$ and two types of Polyimide (BTDA-PPD, PMDA-ODA) by Sol-gel method. Nano-sized $\textrm{TiO}_2$ particles were prepared from $\textrm{TiOEt}_4$ solution. The composites were charcaterized by using XRD, TGA, IR, TEM, and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). $\textrm{TiO}_2$ nano particles were dispersed well in polyimide matrix and the thermal stability of polyimide was improved with $\textrm{TiO}_2$ nano-sized particles.

  • Organic/inorganic hybrid materials have rapidly become a fascinating research field. In this study, $polyimide/TiO_2$ composites were synthesized from nano-sized anatase $TiO_2$ and two types of polyimide, that is, BPDA-PPD and PMDA-ODA. Nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles were prepared from $TiOEt_4$ solution by the sol-gel method. The synthesized PI/$TiO_2$ composites were characterized by using XRD, TGA, FT-IR, TEM, and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). $TiO_2$ particles were dispersed well in polyimides and the mechanical and thermal stability of polyimide was improved with $TiO_2$ nano particles.

  • Polystyrene-polyimide core-shell microsphere was prepared by dispersion polymerization using poly(amic acid) as the stabilizer. Iron oxide was formed at the microsphere by thermal decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl impregnated in the microsphere. The magnetic polystyrene-polyimide microsphere was monodisperse and the size was about 500 nm. The magnetic polystyrene-polyimide microsphere had 40% of iron oxide, which was identified as $Fe_3O_4$ by X-ray diffraction.

  • Research for the synthesis of high-temperature polymers by the photochemical method has been carrying out. The use of cheap and available compounds (viz. benzene, its alkyl, aryl and halogen substitutes, furan and maleic anhydride) subject to ultra violet irradiation resulted in a single stage quantitative yield of about 40 new polymers: polyimide films, enamel insulation, molding materials. At present experimental & industrial lots of wire have been produced. Polymer insulation possesses temperature exploitation range (from -l00$^{\circ}C$ to +300$^{\circ}C$ ) without significant changing of properties. As a result, new polyimide lacquers for production of a wide number of technical articles, such as polyimide films, fibres, enamel-wires, press-materials have been synthesized. An application field of the polyimides in membrane technology, printing plate and optic electronics manufactures has been outlined.

  • A series novel films of polyimide (PI) and co-polyimide (Co-PI) containing fluorine with colorless, flexible properties was prepared by a two-step process from various commercial aromatic monomers such as 4,4'-(Hexafluoro iso propylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), 2,2'-Bis(Trifluoromethyl) benzidine (TFDB), 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (AH6FP) and Bis(4-(3-aminophenoxy)phenyl)sulfone (BAS). Furthermore, these obtained transparent and flexible Co-PI films exhibited excellent thermal stability with the decomposition temperature (at 5% weight loss) around of $500^{\circ}C$ and the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) in the range of $275-350^{\circ}C$.
