Hydrophobically monoendcapped poly(sodium acrylate)s formed hydrophobic microdomains in water. This was concluded on poly(sodium acrylate)s with a linear $C_{12}$-alkyl chain attached specifically at the end of the polymer. There was no well defined CMC (critical micelle concentration), but rather a gradual transition from a micelle free solution to a micelle solution. Steady state fluorescence spectroscopy indicates that the micro domains are rather hydrophobic. At pH 5 in the abscence of salt and at pH 9 in the prescence of 1 M sodium citrate the CAC (critical aggregation concentration) was in the range of 0.1 to 2.4 mM. However at pH 5 there was a linear increase in the transition concentration with a head-group size due to an increase in steric and electrostatic repulsions between polymer main chains. At pH 9 in the abscence of salt the transition concentration was in the range of 1 to 80 mM. For the larger polymers there was a effect which consisted of a concentration gradient of sodium counterion toward the hydrophobic domain. The effect was larger for the larger polymers because of the higher total sodium concentration and the less steep counterion concentration gradient.
Super water-absorbent resins were prepared by inverse suspension copolymerization of sodium acrylate, acrylamide and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate using N, N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide as cross-linker. For the suspension copolymerization, monohexadecyl phosphate was employed as the dispersing agent, cyclohexane as the dispersing medium and potassium persulfate as the initiator. The dependence of water-absorption capacity on the amount of crosslinking agent, oil/water ratio, degree of neutralization and the composition of the copolymer were systematically investigated. Furthermore, the swelling kinetics of the super water-absorbent copolymer was carried out. The absorption of the resins is more than 1800 g/g for deionized water and 100 g/g for 0.9% NaCl solution, respectively. The copolymers showed an increased salt resistance and enhanced water retention of soil.
Poly(urethaneethyl acrylate) hybrid emulsions were synthesized to improve their thermomechanical and solvent resistance properties. In the synthesis, dimethylol propionic acid was used to impart hydrophilicity to the hybrid polymers, and ethyl acrylate monomer was added to the polyurethane prepolymer after neutralization with triethylamine. After dispersion of the neutralized prepolymer, chain extension was carried out with ethylene diamine. Consequently, poly(urethaneethyl acrylate) hybrid emulsion was prepared via soap free emulsion polymerization of ethyl acrylate with reduction-oxidation initiator couple of t-butyl hydroperoxide/sodium bisulfite at $50^{\circ}C$. Tehsile strength, 100% modulus, elongation, and solvent-resistance properties of the hybrid emulsion were measured and compared with those of polyurethane homopolymer, poly(ethyl acrylate) homopolymer, and simple blended samples.
To study the effect of incorporation of a surface crosslinking layer on a crosslinked poly (sodium acrylate) (cPSA) absorbent with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate CEGDMA), we synthesized several surface crosslinked cPSAs with EGDMA by an inverse emulsion polymerization method to delay the absorption of excess water in concrete, Liquid paraffin was used as a continuous phase. cPSA was synthesized with acrylic acid (AA) neutralized with aqueous 8 M sodium hydroxide solution as a monomer, N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) as a redox initiator system by inverse emulsion polymerization. FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize $Ca^{2+}$ ion interaction with cPSA and cPSA-EGDMAs. The swelling ratios of synthesized absorbents were evaluated from the absorption in deionized water, cement saturated aqueous solution and aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (pH 12). Equilibrium swelling times for cPSA and surface crosslinked cPSA with EGDMA were 2 and 3 hrs, respectively. We also observed an increase in setting time of the cement and an increase in the compressive strength of mortar by addition of the synthesized cPSA-EGDMA.

As model waterborne acrylic coatings, mono-dispersed poly(butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate) copolymer latexes of random copolymer and core/shell type graft copolymer were prepared by seeded multi-staged emulsion polymerization with particle size of $180{\sim}200$ nm using semi-batch type process. Sodium lauryl sulfate and potassium persulfate were used as an emulsifier and an initiator, respectively. The effect of particle texture including core/shell phase ratio, glass transition temperature and crosslinking density, and film forming temperature on the film formation and final properties of film was investigated using SEM, AFM, and UV in this study. The film formation behavior of model latex was traced simultaneously by the weight loss measurement and by the change of tensile properties and UV transmittance during the entire course of film formation. It was found that the increased glass transition temperature and higher crosslinking degree of latex resulted in the delay of the onset of coalescence of particles by interdiffusion during film forming process. This can be explained qualitatively in terms of diffusion rate of polymer chains. However, the change of weight loss during film formation was insensitive to discern each film forming stages-I, II and III.
To study the effect of surface crosslinked layer on the crosslinked poly(sodium acrylate) (cPSA) absorbent, we synthesized several surface crosslinked cPSAs with 5, 10 and 20 g of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) by an inverse emulsion polymerization method to delay the absorption of excess water in concrete. We measured the compressive and flexural strength of mortars having 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt% cPSA-EGDMA. We observed the increase of compressive and flexural strength of the cPSA-EGDMA added cement mortars except for the 0.5 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (20 g) added cement mortar. 1.0 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (5 g) added cement mortar showed about 16% and 10% increased compressive and flexural strength than those of plain cement mortar. To study the effect of porosity on compressive and flexural strength, we used FE-SEM and porosimeter. FE-SEM analysis showed swollen cPSMAEGDMA (5 g) filled between calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) crystals. We observed the decreased porosity of the cPSA-EGDMA added cement mortars than that of plain cement mortar. 1.0 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (5 g) cement mortar showed the lowest porosity of 16.5%.

In this study, 3D networked poly(sodium acrylate) gel was polymerized and controlled with the crosslinking environment to evaluate the mechanical properties and swelling behavior. In general, as the degree of crosslinking in a pre-gelled solution increases, the swelling ratio of the 3D networked gel decrease while the mechanical strength of the gel increases. Interestingly, this study demonstrates that the polymerization and crosslinking efficiency in gelling process could be depended on the crosslinking environment by evaluating the number of elastically cross-links in 3D networked gel. As a result, the number of elastically corss-links would be changed with 3.6 times as varying of the crosslinking environment while keeping the degree of crosslinking. It is expected that the 3D networked gel would be optimized as an effective absorbing agent for VOCs by using the gel evaluation method based on the number of elastically cross-links.

New approaches for detecting, preventing and remedying environmental damage are important for protection of the environment. Procedures must be developed and implemented to reduce the amount of waste produced in chemical processes, to detect the presence and/or concentration of contaminants and decontaminate fouled environments. Contamination can be classified into three general types: airborne, surface and structural. The most dangerous type is airborne contamination, because of the opportunity for inhalation and ingestion. The second most dangerous type is surface contamination. Surface contamination can be transferred to workers by casual contact and if disturbed can easily be made airborne. The decontamination of the surface in the nuclear facilities has been widely studied with particular emphasis on small and large surfaces. The amount of wastes being produced during decommissioning of nuclear facilities is much higher than the total wastes cumulated during operation. And, the process of decommissioning has a strong possibility of personal's exposure and emission to environment of the radioactive contaminants, requiring through monitoring and estimation of radiation and radioactivity. So, it is important to monitor the radioactive contamination level of the nuclear facilities for the determination of the decontamination method, the establishment of the decommissioning planning, and the worker's safety. But it is very difficult to measure the surface contamination of the floor and wall in the highly contaminated facilities. In this study, the poly(styrene-ethyl acrylate) [poly(St-EA)] core-shell composite polymer for measurement of the radioactive contamination was synthesized by the method of emulsion polymerization. The morphology of the poly(St-EA) composite emulsion particle was core-shell structure, with polystyrene (PS)as the core and poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) as the shell. Core-shell polymers of styrene (St)/ethyl acrylate (EA) pair were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SOS) as an emulsifier using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator. The polymer was made by impregnating organic scintillators, 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and 1,4-bis[5-phenyl-2-oxazol]benzene (POPOP). Related tests and analysis confirmed the success in synthesis of composite polymer. The products are characterized by IT-IR spectroscopy, TGA that were used, respectively, to show the structure, the thermal stability of the prepared polymer. Two-phase particles with a core-shell structure were obtained in experiments where the estimated glass transition temperature and the morphologies of emulsion particles. Radiation pollution level the detection about under using examined the beta rays. The morphology of the poly(St-EA) composite polymer synthesized by the method of emulsion polymerization was a core-shell structure, as shown in Fig. 1. Core-shell materials consist of a core structural domain covered by a shell domain. Clearly, the entire surface of PS core was covered by PEA. The inner region was a PS core and the outer region was a PEA shell. The particle size distribution showed similar in the range 350-360 nm.
Poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(butyl acrylate) PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles were prepared by the emulsion polymerization of MMA and BA in the presence of different concentration of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The following conclusions are drawn from the measured conversion and particle size distribution, morphology, average molecular weight distribution, observation of film formation and particle formation, glass transition temperature and physical properties of polymerized core-shell composition particles for using adhesive binder. When the concentration of 0.03 wt% surfactant, the conversions of PMMA and PBA core polymerization are excellent as 95.8% for PMMA core and 92.3% for PBA core. Core-shell composite particles are obtained 90.0% for PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles and 89.0% for PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles. It is considered that the core and shell particles are polymerized to be confirmed FT-IR spectra and average molecular weight measured with a GPC, formation of the composite particles is confirmed by the film formation from normal temperature, and composition of inside and outside of the composite particle is confirmed by TEM photograph. The synthesized polymer has two glass transition temperatures, suggesting that the polymer is composed of core polymer and shell polymer unlike general copolymers. It is considered that each core-shell composite particle can be used as a high functionality adhesion binder by the measurement of tensile strength and elongation.
