Cogging torque is often a principal source of vibration and acoustic noise in high precision spindle motor applications. In this paper, cogging torque is analytically calculated using energy method to show that Fourier spectra of airgap permeance function and airgap MMF function are the most important design parameters to control cogging torque. To control these functions, stator pole shoe pairing and magnet arc design are proposed to minimize cogging torque. As for optimization technique, genetic algorithm is applied to handle trade-off effects of design parameters. Results show that the proposed method can reduce the cogging torque effectively.
The design of SPMSM(surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor) has been performed to reduce cogging torque and torque ripples. In general, cogging torque and torque ripples are affected by the shapes of teeth width, yoke depth, magnet pole arc, etc. Particularly, the minimum design point of cogging torque and torque ripples are different so that the design of SPMSM should be done to compromise both of them for precision application. In this paper, the design of PMSM for EPS(electric power steering) system is performed to verify the validity, and the design characteristics versus teeth width, yoke depth, and magnet pole arc are investigated in order to find out the minimum point of cogging torque and torque ripples. In addition, skew of PM is applied for cogging torque reduction.

Switched reluctance motors have received much attention as a driving means for various industrial applications because they have simple construction, low cost and high efficiency. Nevertheless, the requirements of drive converters make it difficult to lower the overall system cost as compared with the DC motor application. Single phase switched reluctance motors (SPSRMs) provide a solution to the high cost problem since the number of switching power devices can be reduced and consequently the trials for application are increased. However, research involving SPSRMs, especially in the area of design work, is insufficient. This paper introduces a novel design methodology of single phase SRM. The design work for SPSRM comprises the determination of many variables such as stator and rotor pole arc as well as on, off and so on. Managing all variable combinations leads to lengthy computation time and a fault in the design process. For that reason, a reliable technique and brief procedure term are required in SPSRM design.
The low cost, ruggedness, and reliability of switched reluctance motor(SRM) drive makes them potentially suitable for many industrial applications. But the generation of a high-level torque ripple and the acoustic noise restricts the practical application range. This paper analyzes the torque characteristic of SRM according to rotor pole arc and the effect of turn-on and turn-off angles to reduce the torque ripple. The simulation result shows the different torque characteristic of each cases.
This paper deals with design of a direct-coupled, small-scaled permanent magnet generator (PMG) for wind power application. First, this paper determines rated power and speed of the PMG from measured characteristics of wind turbines. Second, we derive analytical solutions for the open-circuit field in order to determine optimum magnet thickness and pole pitch/arc ratio. Third, on the basis of open circuit field solutions, stator magnetic circuit including slot opening, teeth width and yoke thickness is designed. And then, a diameter of stator coil which agree with a required current density is calculated, and its turns are determined from the area of slot considering winding packing factor. Finally, finite element (FE) method is employed in analyzing the details of the designed PMG and, test results such as back-emf measurements are given to confirm the design.
This paper proposes an effective assistant model for considering the stator slot-opening effect on air gap flux density distribution in conventional interior-type permanent magnet (IPM) motor. Different from the conventional slot-opening effect analysis in surface-type PM (SPM) motor, a composite effect of slot-opening uniquely existing in IPM motor, which additionally causes enhancement of air gap flux density due to magnet flux path distortion in iron core between the buried PM and rotor surface. This phenomenon is represented by a proposed assistant model, which simply deals with this additional effect by modifying magnetic pole-arc using an effective method. The validity of this proposed analytical model is applied to predict the air gap flux density distribution in an IPM motor model and confirmed by finite element method (FEM).

This paper proposes an optimized universal motor for improving its performance using the finite element method (FEM) with the (1+1) Evolution Strategy (ES) algorithm. To do this, various design parameters are modified, such as air gap length, shape of motor slot, pole shoe, pole width, and rotor shaft diameter. Two parameters (arc length of stator pole and thickness of pole shoe) are chosen and optimized using the program, and the optimized model is built and tested with a performance measuring system. The measured values of the model are compared with those of the initial and the optimized model to prove the algorithm. As a result, the final model improves its performance compared with those of the initial model.
This paper presents a rotor shape optimization of interior type permanent magnet (IPM) motor for cogging torque minimization and maximization of reluctance torque. In order to minimize the cogging torque, the optimal notches are put on the rotor pole face and the arc type pole face is applied. The variations of cogging torque and d-q axis inductions are analyzed by finite element method (FEM).
Shielded metal arc welding, one-ploe and two-pole submerged arc welding were accomplished to investigate microstructure changes on phase transformation behavior in $60kg/mm^2$ quenched and tempered high strength steel. Microstructures were examined by optical micrograph and TEM. In shielded metal arc welding (oxygen 250ppm), the inclusions were small size (0.3-0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$)and small in number. In submerged arc welding (oxygen 430-529ppm), the inclusions were larger(0.7-2$\mu\textrm{m}$) than that of shielded metal arc welding and large in number. Microstructure mainly depends on number and distribution of inclusions in fusion zone of weld metal. It was noticed that a limited number of inclusions favors the formation of acicular ferrite.
The discharge characteristics of a prototype ion source was investigated, which was developed and upgraded for the NBI (Neutral Beam Injection) heating system of KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research). The ion source was designed for the arc discharge of magnetic bucket chamber with multi-pole cusp fields. The ion source was discharged by the emission-limited mode with the control of filament heating voltage. The maximum ion density was 4 times larger than the previous discharge controlled by a space-charge-limited mode with fully heated filament. The plasma (ion) density and arc current were proportional to the filament voltage, but the discharge efficiency was inversely proportional to the operating pressure of hydrogen gas. The maximum ion density and arc current were obtained with constant arc voltage ($80{\sim}100V$), as $8{\times}10^{11}cm^{-3}$ and 1200 A, respectively. The estimated maximum beam current was about 35 A, extracted by the accelerating voltage of 80kV.
