  • Effects of the external optical feedback on the optical transmission characteristics were evaluated for 3 kinds of commercialized DFB-LD modules for 2.5Gbps optical communication systems. As a result, intensity noise induced by external optical feedback via generating the external cavity modes deteriorated the transmission performances of sthe DFB-LD modules as much as 1.5dB, 1.2dB, and 1.0dB for the maximum feedback ratio of -8.8dB which corresponds to the worst reflection along the fiber transmission line. Additional penalty of 0.5dB was occurrred when state of polarization of feedback light was adjusted. From the experiments evaluating the isolation ratio of the single polarization optical isolator, decrease of the polarization dependent isolation ratio as much as 10dB from that of specification and the effective isolation ratio as much as 20dB from that of specification was mjor cause of high sensitivity of DFB-LD modules to external feedback. It was suggested that polarization independent optical isolator or single polarization optical isolator with isolation ratio specification of more than 40dB is required for 2.5Gbps DFB-LD modules with complete suppression of external feedback effects.

  • In this paper, a compact circularly polarized metamaterial patch antenna using cross aperture-coupled feed is proposed. The CP antenna utilizes the -1 mode that is induced by the composit right-left handed(CRLH) transmission line. Since the -1 mode has the same properties with the $TM_{010}$ mode of the conventional patch antenna, the circular polarization(CP) can be realized. If two orthogonal modes are excited with $90^{\circ}$ phase difference, the CP property can be obtained. In order to obtain two orthogonal modes and $90^{\circ}$ phase difference, 4 mushroom structures having the shape of square are employed. The width and length of the cross aperture are optimized through the design algorithm. The fabricated antenna is based on RT/duroid5880 substrate and the total area of the 4 mushroom is $0.25{\lambda}_0{\times}0.25{\lambda}_0$. The center frequency of the LHCP(Left-Handed Circular Polarization) antenna is measured as 1.622 GHz and circular polarization bandwidth(3 dB) is measured as 3 MHz. The center frequency of the RHCP(Right-Handed Circular Polarization) antenna is measured as 1.609 GHz and circular polarization bandwidth (3 dB) is measured as 3 MHz, respectively. The measured radiation efficiency of LHCP antenna is 61.1 % and the measured radiation efficiency of RHCP antenna is 54.5 %.

  • The presence of voids behind tunnel linings results in their deterioration. One proposed method of effectively detecting such voids by non-destructive means is radar. This research is devoted to quantitatively evaluating the efficiency of such non-destructive tests with radar. As a foundation to this ongoing research, which aims to acquire directional information and estimate the shape of specific voids using radar of three-dipole antenna type, an investigation of microwave polarization methods is carried out with various void orientations and void geometries. As the results, it is clarified that the response of microwave polarization modes depends on void geometry and thus there is a possibility of identifying the geometry and orientation of specific voids using radar of three-dipole antenna type.

  • Polarized mid-infrared emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can provide a crucial test of basic physics of alignment of nanoparticles and opens a potential new window into studying magnetic fields. In this talk, I will present a new model of polarized PAH emission that takes into account the effect of PAH alignment with the magnetic field due to resonance paramagnetic relaxation. I will then present our predictions for the polarization level of the strong PAH emission features from the interstellar medium. I will present the first detection of polarization of PAH emission at 11.3micron which is consistent with our theoretical prediction. Finally, I will discuss important implications of this work for tracing magnetic fields via mid-IR PAH features and for constraining the polarization of anomalous microwave emission that is useful for the quest of CMB B-modes.

  • In this paper, we demonstrate a polarization independent optical phase modulator using electro-optic polymer, P2ANS. To overcome the intrinsic polarization dependency of electro-optic effect, we control the optic axis using a new electrode structure. P2ANS(42:75) and P2ANS(25:75) are used for the core layer and the cladding layer, respectively. The buried-type single mode waveguide is fabricated by oxygen ion reactive etching and electic poling is performed by applying 1, 200V at 135$^{\circ}C$. The measured V$_{\pi}$ of the device for both TE and TM modes are 70V.

  • In this work, we investigate polarization-dependent excitation of the propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes in gold nanowires (Au NWs) combined with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The light coupling from focused light to SPPs on Au NWs is investigated for different structural combinations of Au NWs with Au NPs, using full-wave finite-element numerical simulations. The results show that the excitation of SPPs changes remarkably on varying the orientation of the NP on NW or the polarization angle of the incident light. Metallic NWs combined with NPs can be applied to the polarization-resolved SPP coupling in various optical and optoelectronic devices including photonic circuits and optical sensors.

  • A rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on effective dielectric method (EDM) is introduced and developed to analyze the polarization beam-splitting of optical rib-type directional coupler with three guiding layers. Furthermore, to confirm the validity of approach proposed in this paper, we compare our results with those ones of BeamPROP, which is a commercial software package used widely. Consequently, the numerical results reveal that the hybrid modes incident into a guiding channel of rib-type coupler are split well through upper and lower guiding channels in a polarization length.

  • In this paper, a wideband, circularly polarized patch antenna is proposed that leverages the unidirectional resonant modes of a circular patch mounted on top of a grounded dielectric-ferrite substrate. The proposed antenna is fed via the proximity coupling method and several parasitically coupled patches are placed on a dielectric superstrate to enhance the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. The resonant modes of the structure rotate only in the clockwise or counter clockwise directions. In the frequency range where the effective permeability of the ferrite layer is negative, the resonance frequencies of these modes differ significantly, which produces a large axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. For the proposed antenna, the numerical results show the 10 dB impedance bandwidth to be around 44% and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth to be higher than 64%.

  • This paper introduces a technique to obtain the broadband characteristics of circularly polarized antennas using an L-shaped probe. A waveguide antenna is suitable for obtaining high gain and handling convenience in some applications; however, the asymmetrical structure of the L-shaped probe results in cross-polarization and frequency dependence on the field distribution of higher-order modes (HOM). In addition to the basic characteristics of a waveguide antenna with an L-shaped probe, the author discusses some techniques to reduce the HOM and cross-polarization. As a result, the 3-dB axial ratio (AR) is obtained with the fundamental mode even when the frequency is expanded to the region for HOM of TM. This reduction is mainly due to the cutoff structure to the TM mode around the short wall of the waveguide. Furthermore, some aperture modification techniques can reduce the cross-polarization in a wide range of angles in the radiation pattern. Such techniques and their mechanisms are discussed in this paper. The obtained performance shows that the proposed antennas have a wide range of angles of 3-dB AR in the radiation pattern, broadband characteristics in impedance and AR, and low variation in group velocity.

  • This paper presents a rigorous comparison of the design characteristics of polarization-insensitive directional coupler (DC) and multimode interference (MMI) coupler based on rib type waveguides, by using longitudinal modal transmission-line theory (L-MTLT). It shows that the multimode mixing and interference property of MMI can be structurally designed through the continuous evolution of the two-mode coupling property of DC. It also compares and analyzes the coupling efficiency along with the coupling length and the wavelength between polarization-insensitive DC and MMI. From the design properties obtained, it demonstrates for the first time the integration of polarization-insensitive DC or MMI with a Bragg grating and evaluates precisely the filtering characteristics. The numerical results reveal that the DC, as long as it is designed to have the same coupling length for TE and TM modes, has better performance than the MMI in polarization-insensitive filtering behaviour. However, it shows that the MMI with much less coupling length than DC is preferred in the miniaturization of integrated devices.
