We present the result of near-infrared (near-IR) imaging polarimetry of star-forming regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We compiled near-IR photometric and polarimetric data of N159/160 regions. The photometric and polarimetric data were simultaneously obtained in J, H, and Ks bands using SIRPOL, an imaging polarimeter of the InfraRed Survey Facility (IRSF), in 2007 February. We measured Stokes parameters of point-like sources to derive their degree of polarization and polarization position angles. In this poster, we present polarization properties of these star-forming regions. We also discuss the polarization structure in these regions compared with mid-infrared dust emission structure from the Spitzer SAGE survey.
In this paper, a rheo-optical methodology based on small angle light scattering and polarimetry is applied to investigate in-situ and on a time resolved basis the flow-induced structures in aqueous biopolymeric blends. Water-dextran-gelatin is chosen as an example. It is verified to what extent the laws and scaling relations, originally developed for synthetic polymer blends, are valid for the morphology development in this aqueous biopolymeric mixture. It was observed that under low shear rate conditions, the biopolymeric emulsion can be regarded as a conventional emulsion. However, at high shear rates flow induced homogenization occurs.
A simple technique to measure electro-optic coefficients has been developed. It is based on rotating analyzer polarimetry. With a coaxial configuration of the optically active polarizing devices, the synchronously digitized signals are Fourier analyzed to quantitatively determine the elliptical polarization of light and, hence, the electric field induced birefringence. This technique has the advantage that it does not require waveguiding, and since it is improved from the crossed polarizer method it measures the phase retardation directly. It has been applied for the precise determination of electro-optic coefficients of uniaxial LiNbO3 single crystals. The excellent agreeement with reported values confirms its usefulness toward accurate characterization of electro-optic coefficients of unknown specimens.
After a short description of the observatory, this presentation will highlight some of the most recent scientific achievements based on CFHT observations and how they benefit from the current instrumentation and novel observing modes proposed to the CFHT users. We will then move to the mid-term future with the development of new spectroscopic capabilities (visible wide-field FTS or near-IR spectro-polarimetry) and the study of a novel wide-field imager in the visible using Ground-Layer AO to provide unprecedented image quality on a large field of view. As an option for the long-term future, the concept of a next generation 10-m class telescope to replace the current CFHT 3.6-m will be described. An emphasis will be given on how CFHT is slowly morphing into an Asia-Pacific Rim observatory and on the role the Korean community could play in such an endeavor, from immediate access to first-class astronomical data to partnering with other nations in exciting developments.

The most powerful technique for deducing the magnetic structure of the Sun is spectro-polarimetry. Detailed measurements of the polarization signal of the spectral lines (Stokes vector) allow us to infer the physical conditions in the solar atmosphere prevailing during the line formation. Inversion codes are the main tool to extract this information from the Stokes spectra. This study will focus on measurements of the chromospheric He I 1083.0 nm triplet and the photospheric Si I 1082.7 nm line. A spectropolarimetric data set of sunspots, obtained with the German Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) at the Teide observatory on Tenerife, is analyzed using an inversion technique. We will introduce the German Vacuum Tower Telescope and the inversion code HeLix, and will show data sets that are analyzed by HeLix.
This study aims to evaluate the usability of polarimetric SAR measurements for discriminating water-covered area from other land cover types and to propose polarimetric parameters showing the better response to the flood. Flood-related changes in the polarimetric parameters were studied using the L-band PALSAR-2 quad-pol mode data acquired before and after the severe flood events occurred in Joso city, Japan. The experimental results showed that, among various polarimetric parameters, the HH-polarization intensity, the Shannon entropy, and the surfaces scattering component of model-based decomposition were found to be useful to discriminate water-covered areas from other land cover types. Particularly, an unsupervised change detection with the Shannon entropy provides the best result for an automated mapping of flood extents.

A polarimetric experimental method was developed to determine the Jones matrix elements of transparent optical materials without sign ambiguity. A set of polarization dependent transmittance data of the samples was measured with polarizer - sample - analyzer system and another set of data was measured with polarizer - sample - quarter-wave plate - analyzer. Two data sets were compared and mathematically analyzed to obtain the correct signs of the elements of the matrix. The Jones matrix elements of a quarter-wave plate were determined to check the validity of the method. The experimentally obtained matrix elements of the quarter-wave plate were consistent with the theoretical expectations. The same method was applied to obtain the Jones matrix elements of a twisted nematic liquid crystal panel.
Chirality is ubiquitous in physics and biology from microscopic to macroscopic phenomena, such as fermionic interactions and DNA duplication. In photonics, chirality has traditionally represented differentiated optical responses for right and left circular polarizations. This definition of optical chirality in the polarization domain includes handedness-dependent phase velocities or optical absorption inside chiral media, which enable polarimetry for measuring the material concentration and circular dichroism spectroscopy for sensing biological or chemical enantiomers. Recently, the emerging field of non-Hermitian photonics, which explores exotic phenomena in gain or loss media, has provided a new viewpoint on chirality in photonics that is not restricted to the traditional polarization domain but is extended to other physical quantities such as the orbital angular momentum, propagation direction, and system parameter space. Here, we introduce recent milestones in chiral light-matter interactions in non-Hermitian photonics and show an enhanced degree of design freedom in photonic devices for spin and orbital angular momenta, directionality, and asymmetric modal conversion.
Filamentary structures pervade the whole kind of molecular clouds from low- to high-mass star-forming clouds, and the non-star-forming clouds. It is supposed to be a prerequisite stage of star formation, and hence how filaments and dense cores form is one of the critical questions in the early star formation study. We investigated the dynamics and chemistry of dense cores in IC5146 using TRAO FUNS (TRAO Survey of the nearby Filamentary molecular clouds, the Universal Nursery of Stars) data. In addition, we performed polarization observation using JCMT Pol-2 polarimetry to investigate the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale. In the presentation, we will present the result of TRAO FUNS and JCMT/Pol2 observation toward the filaments and dense cores in the IC5146. We aim to reveal the roles of gravity, turbulence, and magnetic field in the formation of dense cores in the western hub-filament structure of IC5146.
