Purpose: This study examines the effect of full information disclosure on seller profit when there exists information asymmetry between sellers and buyers, focusing on the risk averseness of buyers. By investigating the interaction between product quality and perceived risk through online sales data, we attempt to figure out the incentive structure of full information disclosure specifically when buyers are risk-averse, so that we can suggest more feasible information disclosure strategy to sellers. Research design, data and methodology: Our empirical model analyzes the sales data of collectible goods from a major online seller using Poisson regression. In our model, we have specifically considered risk-averseness of buyers by estimating the interaction effect between the product quality and perceived risk on seller profit, aiming for a more precise empirical analysis on sellers' incentive structure of full disclosure. Results: Our empirical analysis strongly supports the effect of interaction between product quality and perceived risk, showing that the incentive for full disclosure is much stronger when product quality is higher, and vice versa. Therefore, sellers are strongly encouraged to voluntarily reveal product weaknesses when their product quality is higher than average, while it is more profitable to hide any product defects when quality claim is lower than average. Conclusions: This study supports the related literature by confirming economic incentives for full disclosure, and also supplements and strengthens previous studies by presenting that the effect of interaction between product quality and perceived risk strongly affects seller profit. Our unique finding supports both mandatory disclosure and voluntary disclosure arguments and presents practical implications to marketing managers by suggesting that seller's incentive for revealing weaknesses depends on the level of seller's product quality.
Customer reviews help potential customers make purchasing decisions. However, the prevalence of reviews on websites push the customer to sift through them and change the focus from a mere search to identifying which of the available reviews are valuable and useful for the purchasing decision at hand. To identify useful reviews, websites have developed different mechanisms to give customers options when evaluating existing reviews. Websites allow users to rate the usefulness of a customer review as helpful or not. Amazon.com uses a ratio-type helpfulness, while Yelp.com uses a count-type usefulness index. This usefulness index provides helpful reviews to future potential purchasers. This study investigated the effects of sentiment and readability on useful votes for customer reviews. Similar studies on the relationship between sentiment and readability have focused on the ratio-type usefulness index utilized by websites such as Amazon.com. In this study, Yelp.com's count-type usefulness index for restaurant reviews was used to investigate the relationship between sentiment/readability and usefulness votes. Yelp.com's online customer reviews for stores in the beverage and food categories were used for the analysis. In total, 170,294 reviews containing information on a store's reputation and popularity were used. The control variables were the review length, store reputation, and popularity; the independent variables were the sentiment and readability, while the dependent variable was the number of helpful votes. The review rating is the moderating variable for the review sentiment and readability. The length is the number of characters in a review. The popularity is the number of reviews for a store, and the reputation is the general average rating of all reviews for a store. The readability of a review was calculated with the Coleman-Liau index. The sentiment is a positivity score for the review as calculated by SentiWordNet. The review rating is a preference score selected from 1 to 5 (stars) by the review author. The dependent variable (i.e., usefulness votes) used in this study is a count variable. Therefore, the Poisson regression model, which is commonly used to account for the discrete and nonnegative nature of count data, was applied in the analyses. The increase in helpful votes was assumed to follow a Poisson distribution. Because the Poisson model assumes an equal mean and variance and the data were over-dispersed, a negative binomial distribution model that allows for over-dispersion of the count variable was used for the estimation. Zero-inflated negative binomial regression was used to model count variables with excessive zeros and over-dispersed count outcome variables. With this model, the excess zeros were assumed to be generated through a separate process from the count values and therefore should be modeled as independently as possible. The results showed that positive sentiment had a negative effect on gaining useful votes for positive reviews but no significant effect on negative reviews. Poor readability had a negative effect on gaining useful votes and was not moderated by the review star ratings. These findings yield considerable managerial implications. The results are helpful for online websites when analyzing their review guidelines and identifying useful reviews for their business. Based on this study, positive reviews are not necessarily helpful; therefore, restaurants should consider which type of positive review is helpful for their business. Second, this study is beneficial for businesses and website designers in creating review mechanisms to know which type of reviews to highlight on their websites and which type of reviews can be beneficial to the business. Moreover, this study highlights the review systems employed by websites to allow their customers to post rating reviews.

There seems to be a consensus among most people that visibility impairment is the most obvious indicator of air pollution. While considerable evidence on the association between air pollution and health outcomes including death and disease have been established, based on industrial complex areas or huge urban cities, time-series, case-crossover and cohort studies, scarce literature exists on the direct evidence for the association between visibility and adverse health outcomes. Our study is assessed the effect of air pollution measured by visibility impairment on respiratory mortality over a period of six years. Relative risks in respiratory deaths were estimated by a Poisson regression model of daily deaths between $1999{\sim}2004$. Daily counts of respiratory deaths as dependent variable was modelled with daily 24-hr mean visibility measurements (kilometers) as independent variable by means of Poisson regression. This model is controlled for confounding factors such as day of weeks, weather variables, seasonal variables and $PM_{10}$. The results in this study is observed the statistically significant association between an inverse health effect and visibility during the study period for respiratory mortality (percentage change in the relative risk for all aged -0.57%, 95% Cl, $-1.01%{\sim}-0.12%$; for $0{\sim}15$ aged -7.12%, 95% Cl, $-13.29%{\sim}-0.51%$; for 65+ aged -0.43%, 95% Cl, $-0.93%{\sim}-0.06%$ per 1 km increased in visibility). The effect size was much reduced during warm season. Visibility impairment resulting from air pollution is strongly associated with respiratory mortality, especially for children may be spent at outdoor. Our result provides a quick and useful indicator for eliciting the contribution of air pollution to the excess risk of respiratory mortality in Seoul, Korea.

Purpose: This study was done to examine the prophylactic effect of transparent film dressing on the sacrum and coccyx sites to reduce pressure ulcers. Methods: The participants were 317 patients admitted to an SICU in Seoul, Korea. Of the patients, 175 were assigned to the experimental group and 142 to the control group. For participants in the experimental group, a prophylactic transparent film dressing was applied on the sacrum and coccyx. The control group received the usual care. The nurses checked for pressure ulcers on the sacrum and coccyx at least once every duty. When pressure ulcer occurred, it reported on the record form. The results were analyzed using Poisson and Hierarchical logistic regression. Results: The prevalence and risk of pressure ulcer was lower in the experimental group compared to the control group but the difference was not significant. The ICU length of stay was significantly associated with pressure ulcer risk. Conclusion: Findings indicate that prophylactic transparent film dressing helps to reduce pressure ulcer in SICU patients.
Components manufactured from composite materials are frequently subjected to superimposed mechanical and thermal loadings during their operating service. Both types of loadings may cause fracture and failure of composite structures. When composite cross-ply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ are subjected to uni-axial tensile loading, different types of damage are set-up and developed such as matrix cracking: transverse and longitudinal cracks, delamination between disoriented layers and broken fibers. The development of these modes of damage can be detrimental for the stiffness of the laminates. From the experimental point of view, transverse cracking is known as the first mode of damage. In this regard, the objective of the present paper is to investigate the effect of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminate under thermo-mechanical degradation. A Finite Element (FE) simulation of damage evolution in composite crossply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ subjected to uni-axial tensile loading is carried out. The effect of transverse cracking on the cross-ply laminate strength under thermo-mechanical degradation is investigated numerically. The results obtained by prediction of the numerical model developed in this investigation demonstrate the influence of the transverse cracking on the bearing capacity and resistance to damage as well as its effects on the variation of the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion. The results obtained are in good agreement with those predicted by the Shear-lag analytical model as well as with the obtained experimental results available in the literature.
In this paper, an analytical solution of displacement, strain and stress field for rotating thick-walled cylinder made of functionally graded material subjected to the uniform external magnetic field and thermal field in plane strain state has been studied. Stress, strain and displacement field as a function of radial coordinates considering magneto-thermo-elasticity are derived analytically. According to the Maxwell electro-dynamic equations, Lorentz force in term of displacement is obtained in cylindrical coordinates. Also, symmetric temperature distribution along the thickness of hollow cylinder is obtained by solving Fourier heat transfer equation in cylindrical coordinates. Using equation of equilibrium and thermo-mechanical constitutive equations associated with Lorentz force, a second-order inhomogeneous differential equation in term of displacement is obtained and will be solved analytically. Except Poisson's ratio, other mechanical properties such as elasticity modulus, density, magnetic permeability coefficient, heat conduction coefficient and thermal expansion coefficient are assumed to vary through the thickness according to a power law. In results analysis, non-homogeneity parameter has been chosen arbitrary and inner and outer surface of cylinder are assumed to be rich metal and rich ceramic, respectively. The effect of rotation, thermal, magnetic field and non-homogeneity parameter of functionally graded material which indicates percentages of cylinder's constituents are studied on displacement, Von Mises equivalent stress and Von Mises equivalent strain fields.

A linear ultrasonic motor was designed by a combination of the first longitudinal and fourth bending mode, the motor consisted of a straight aluminum alloys bar bonded with a piezoelectric ceramics element as a driving element. That is, L$_1$-B$_4$ linear ultrasonic motor can be constructed using a multi-mode vibrator of longitudinal and bending modes. The simulation with variation of material characteristics of piezoceramic were performed as use of finite element analysis ANSYS 5.5, such as elastic compliance, piezoelectric constant, electro-mechanical coupling coefficient, poisson's ratio and density. The results of simulation, elastic compliance constant s$_{11}$ and piezoelectric constant d$_{31}$ had the most of influence on the elliptic-motion. This results consist with using transverse effect of material. The used motor were piezoceramics of 4 layers, and the dimensions were 65$\times$5$\times$3.5mm(LxWxt).).
Criteria for rehabilitation priority are discussed to evaluate structural stability of deteriorated water transport and transmission pipes, in this study. For the purposes, safety factor is introduced and estimated by measuring tensile strength and by analyzing stress caused by the internal-external loads working on buried pipe body. Related informations are surveyed and collected under various conditions in the fields by digging out and the structural stability is assessed. In the evaluation results of structural safety, it is shown that steel pipe is more affected by external load than internal load. The average external load is estimated as $53.7kg/cm^2$ and total hoop stress is estimated by $2676.5kg/cm^2$. Also, Poisson effect into longitudinal direction due to internal and external loads is most influential on hoop stress. The calculated safety factors of hoop stress are ranged from 0.7 to 5.2 with average value of 2.1, considering a bending stress to longitudinal direction. The decision of rehabilitation priority by safety factors show that structural safety of CIP sample 1(S1) was assessed at the lowest order with safety factor value, 0.7 and that of DI sample 15(S15) was evaluated as the most stable in structural aspect.
Exercise of complete control on all aspects of any manufacturing / fabrication process is very difficult, leading to uncertainties in the material properties and geometric dimensions of structural components. This is especially true for laminated composites because of the large number of parameters associated with its fabrication. When the basic parameters like elastic modulus, density and Poisson's ratio are random, the derived response characteristics such as deflections, natural frequencies, buckling loads, stresses and strains are also random, being functions of the basic random system parameters. In this study the basic elastic properties of a composite lamina are assumed to be independent random variables. Perturbation formulation is used to model the random parameters assuming the dispersions small compared to the mean values. The system equations are analyzed to obtain the mean and the variance of the plate natural frequencies. Several application problems of free vibration analysis of composite plates, employing the proposed method are discussed. The analysis indicates that, at times it may be important to include the effect of randomness in material properties of composite laminates.
In this paper, using consistent couple stress theory and Hamilton's principle, the free vibration analysis of Euler-Bernoulli nano-beams made of bi-directional functionally graded materials (BDFGMs) with small scale effects are investigated. To the best of the researchers' knowledge, in the literature, there is no study carried out into consistent couple-stress theory for free vibration analysis of BDFGM nanostructures with arbitrary functions. In addition, in order to obtain small scale effects, the consistent couple-stress theory is also applied. These models can degenerate into the classical models if the material length scale parameter is taken to be zero. In this theory, the couple-tensor is skew-symmetric by adopting the skew-symmetric part of the rotation gradients as the curvature tensor. The material properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be graded in both axial and thickness directions, which it can vary according to an arbitrary function. The governing equations are obtained using the concept of Hamilton principle. Generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is used to solve the governing equations for various boundary conditions to obtain the natural frequencies of BDFG nano-beam. At the end, some numerical results are presented to study the effects of material length scale parameter, and inhomogeneity constant on natural frequency.
