Statistics of Poison Exposure in Korea (국내중독현황)

  • Objective: This study was conducted for the nationwide statistical survey of poison exposure to provide the rationale for establishing and developing the poison control center (PCC) in Korea. Design: Study group for Korea PCC in National Medical Center reviewed the medical literature on poison exposure of Korea from death reports of National Statistical Office (NSO), the toxic exposure statistics from the report of National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC), and poison related data from 119 ambulance services (FD) for the purpose of obtaining the poison and its related data. We also conducted questionnaire from the expert who work in emergency medicine department at the designated 320 emergency medical centers in Korea for the preparedness and acknowledgement about necessity of PCC and their need for that. Results: We reviewed the reliable data from the death report of NSO, poison exposure data from NHIC, and running report from FD. Poisoning death occured at home ($36.7\%$) and hospital ($46.3\%$). Poisoning are more common in rural area than the city area. Patients were seen more frequently in the local clinics than in any hospital. The drugs ($45.7\%$) and pesticide ($18.1\%$) are common poison. Common place to poison exposure were residential area ($39.9\%$), industry ($9\%$). mass residential area ($7\%$). and farm ($6\%$). The education level were primary school ($33.2\%$), high school ($23.7\%$), and middle schol ($21.3\%$) in order. We have to provide the poison guideline for lay public to understand easily, and for medical experts. The medical facilities need to be invested and have more interest for toxicology. All medical staff who work in the designated emergency medical center want PCC to establish. They want to have poison information from hospital ($91.3\%$), regional poison information center ($45.0\%$), regional poison control center ($52.5\%$), nationwide poison information center ($48.8\%$), nationwide poison control center ($46.25\%$), as a role of poison control center. They also want that pcc have poison epidemiologic study and statstics, training program for the experts, registration of rare case of posion on website, reflection of policies to activities for antidote production etc., speedy consultation system for poison analysis, public education, establishment of both regional and national pee, etc. Conclusion: Poison center must be established to provide poison information for all the public and medical experitise, focusing rural area and private clinic, to detoxify, to reduce the cost, time, morbity, and mortality through the whole country.

A study on the ascending impulsively & adversely of poison(衝逆) -On the basis of Yakucho(藥徵) of Yoshimasu Todo(吉益東洞)- (충역(衝逆)에 대한 고찰(考察) -길익동동(吉益東洞)의 《약징(藥徵)》을 중심으로-)

  • Yoshimasu Todo(吉益東洞) said in his book Yakucho, that Ramulus Cinamoni(桂枝) cures ascending impulsively & adversely of poison(衝逆). Here, the meaning of ascending impulsively & adversely of poison(衝逆) is not obvious. The objective of this thesis was to discover the exact meaning of ascending impulsively & adversely of poison(衝逆), through the analysis of Todo's books, and specifically the publication Yakucho(藥徵). Todo hadn't used the term ascending impulsively & adversely of poison(衝逆) from the beginning. He had used the term together with ascending adversely of poison(上逆) and ascending adversely of qi(上氣) in the early stage and had united the term into ascending impulsively & adversely of poison(衝逆) in the middle stage. From this study, it was determined that ascending impulsively & adversely of poison(衝逆) is the combined terms of ascending impulsively of poison(上衝) and ascending adversely of poison(上逆). Considering his view of illness, Todo had explained that every disease is caused by poison in the body. It was appropriate for him to use the term ascending impulsively & adversely of poison(衝逆) when he described the state of attacking and resisting in the body.

A Study on the Yin and Yang Poison (陰陽毒) in 『Donguisusebowon』 (『동의수세보원』 음양독(陰陽毒)에 대한 고찰)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to enhance the understanding of Yin and Yang poison by examining and comparing the views of Je-ma Lee and the medicine scholars before Je-ma Lee, including Zhang Zhongjing. Methods We examined and compared the contents related to Yin and Yang poison in 『Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet (金匱要略)』, 『Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑)』, and 『Donguisusebowon (東醫壽世保元)』. Results and Conclusion In 『Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet』, Zhang Zhongjing described the symptoms of Yin and Yang poison respectively, but could not suggested each prescription. In 『Donguibogam』, there were several prescriptions for Yin and Yang poison, respectively. In 『Donguisusebowon』, Yang poison belonged to the Soyangin and Taeeumin disease, Yin poison belonged to the Soeumin disease. Je-ma Lee emphasized that interior heat, which has grown suddenly should be controlled quickly for treatment of Yang poison in Soyangin and Taeeumin. And, in order to treat Yin poison caused by chronic course in Soeumin, Ginseng should be used a lot to help the Yang energy. Also, it is a better treatment to take the medicine ahead of time before the disease develops into Yin poison.

Different Characteristics of Toxic Substance/poison Exposure Data that Collected from Pre-hospital Telephone Response and Emergency Department (일부 지역의 전화상담을 통해 얻어진 독성물질 노출정보와 응급실 기반 중독 정보 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find differences in the demographics of toxic exposed patients and substance between call based poison information data and hospital based poison information data. Methods: Seoul 1339 call-response data were used as call based poison data and toxic related injury surveillance data of the Korean center for disease control and prevention (KCDC) were used as hospital based poison data. Age, sex, the kind of exposed substance, reasons for exposure, and exposure routes were compared between two data sets. We analyzed the presence or not of documentation on the name and amount of exposed substance, symptoms after exposure in call based poison data. Results: Seoul1339 poison data included a total of 2260 information related to toxic exposure and KCDC poison data included 5650 poison cases. There was no difference in sexual distribution. Pediatric exposure and accidental exposure were more common in call based poison data. The most common exposed substances were household products in call based poison data and medicines in hospital based poison data, respectively. Documents regarding amount and time of toxic exposure and symptoms after toxic exposure were not recorded exactly in call based poison data. Conclusion: There were significant differences in age, reasons for toxic exposure, and the kinds of exposed substances. Poison information data from both pre-hospital and hospital must be considered.

Clinical study of Atopic Dermatitis patient treated with Poison Extraction Method (배독요법을 통한 아토피환자 2례에 대한 임싱적 고찰)

  • Objectives : This study is desinged in order to evaluate the Poison extraction method for the Atopic dermatitis. Methods : The authors observed the two cases of Atopic dermatitis patients who previously used steroid-based ointment. for treating the Poison Extraction Method. Conclusions : 1. In case 1, the patient with mild case of Atopic dermatitis in face is treated with the Poison extraction method. Rash symptoms intensed for first few days. As sweating appeared in the local area from the seventh day, all the symptoms was disappeared rapidly. No recurrence was found. 2. In case 2, the patient with severe case of Atopic dermatitis in whole body is treated with the Poison extraction method. The symptoms intensed after two months and all the symptoms of itchiness, rash, scaly letter dissapeared in the third and fourth months. No recurrence was found. 3. In both cases of mild and severe cases of Atopic dermatitis. all the symptoms were disappeared and no recurrence was found with the Poison Extraction Method.

  • The study is on Yoshimasu Todo's thoughts of diseases and medical treatments. Conclusions are as below. 1. Yoshimasu Todo‘s thoughts of diseases. Diseases are existence of the poison in the human body. The poison oppresses and blocks the stream of vital energy. 'When evil-Qi is excessive. we call it Existence[邪氣盛則實]' means 'The existence of the poison in human body'. In this case, we must use herbal medicine as treatments. However, 'When body energy is exhausted, we call it Deficiency[精氣奪則虛]’ means 'The deficiency of body energy'. In this case, we don't have to use herbal medicine, because it is not a disease. For the recovery of the health. we shall intake nutritional food. 2. Yoshimasu Todo‘s thoughts of medical treatment. Medical treatment is to expel the poison from the body by using herbal medicine. When a medicine strikes the poison right, a reaction called 'Myunghyun[暝眩]' occurs. Myunghyun is the reaction of a living body when the poison is being expelled. To strike the poison right with herbal medicine, we must treat the patient according to the symptoms, not to the cause, nor the name[病名] of a disease.

  • At the reference plant(Wolsong unit No. 1) a manual poison sampling system is provided to periodically sample gadolinium from each tank and analyze it in the laboratory to provide assurance that adequate poison concentration in each tank is maintained. The AECB required a continuous, on-line monitoring system. On Wolsong unit No. 2, process piping adapter and new instrument loops added to the Liquid Injection Shutdown System(LISS) which is part of SDS2. The new instrument loops continuously monitor SDS2 poison conductivity and initiate an alarm when the poison concentration is too low.

Financial Innovation and Investor Wealth: A Study of the Poison Put in Convertible Bonds

  • The takeover boom of the 1980s was accompanied by a series of innovations in debt contracts, including the poison put that allows bonds to be redeemed in the event of a corporate control change. The poison put was included in a large majority of convertible debt offerings, shortly after the first issues with such provisions. We attempt to understand the factors that contributed to the widespread adoption of this innovation in convertible bonds and the consequences for shareholder wealth. Our, findings suggest that by reducing the potential for bondholder-shareholder conflicts and by conveying positive information about future takeover prospect'5, poison puts result in significant benefits to issuing firm shareholders, particularly if the firm is under takeover speculation. There are, however, no benefits when a firm has adopted anti-takeover measures prior to the offering. There is weaker evidence that existing bondholders do worse when poison puts are present.

  • In Yoshimasu Todo (吉益東洞)'s book, the doctors' commitment is said to attack the poison of illness and this can be realized only by using the poison of medicine. From this point of view, he had denied the preceding medicine books, since there was no distinction between the food that raise the body and the poison that attack the poison of illness in the preceding medicine books. In addition, Every medicine has the respective results and one medicine treats one disease, otherwise, in the preceding medicine books, one medicine deals with more than one illness and also they have denied that the characters of medicines are cold or hot because they couldn't be proven by tasting or seeing.

  • Many historians presume that several kings included the crown prince were killed by poison in the Jo-Soon dynasty. Above all, there is every possibility of killing the crown prince So-Hyoon(昭顯) by poison. The crown prince So-Hyeon was detained for 8 years in Sim-Yang(瀋陽). He died suddenly in two month from coming home. According to an authentic record, official death causes were malaria. But there is little possibility that a young crown prince die of malaria at the age of 34. His dead body shows change of skin color and bleeding from the ear, eye, mouth, and nose. This is the sufficient evidence that he was killed by poison. King In-Jo have a doubt that he was ousted from his post by crown prince So-Hyeon in conspiracy with cheong imperial court. Especially, after the crown prince So-Hyeon's death, owing to cold attitude that king In-Jo shows and a tragic affair that occurred to the crown prince's family, king In-Jo is under suspicion as the mastermind of the murder. Another poisoners are Jo-So Yong(趙昭容) and Lee-Hyeong Ik(李聲益). Jo-So Yong, a royal harem, intrigue against the couple of crown prince So-Hyoon. Lee-Hyeong Ik that win king In-Jo's favor take charge of the medical treatment. We supposed that toxic substance is arsenic poison.
