In this paper, a method of constructing a rectangular net from unorganized point cloud data is presented. In the method an implicit surface that fits the given point data is generated by using principal component analysis(PCA) and adaptive domain decomposition method(ADDM). Then a complete and quality rectangular net can be obtained by extracting voxel data from the implicit surface and projecting exterior faces of extracted voxels onto the implicit surface. The main advantage of the proposed method is that a quality rectangular net can be extracted from randomly scattered 3D points only without any further information. Furthermore the results of this works can be used to obtain many useful information including a slicing data, a solid STL model and a NURBS surface model in many areas involved in treatment of large amount of point data by proper processing of implicit surface and rectangular net generated previously.

In this study, we present a mapping framework for 3D spatial reconstruction of digital twin model using navigation and perception sensors mounted on an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV). For improving the level of realism of digital twin models, 3D spatial information should be reconstructed as a digitalized spatial model and integrated with the components and system models of the ASV. In particular, for the 3D spatial reconstruction, color and 3D point cloud data which acquired from a camera and a LiDAR sensors corresponding to the navigation information at the specific time are required to map without minimizing the noise. To ensure clear and accurate reconstruction of the acquired data in the proposed mapping framework, a image preprocessing was designed to enhance the brightness of low-light images, and a preprocessing for 3D point cloud data was included to filter out unnecessary data. Subsequently, a point matching process between consecutive 3D point cloud data was conducted using the Generalized Iterative Closest Point (G-ICP) approach, and the color information was mapped with the matched 3D point cloud data. The feasibility of the proposed mapping framework was validated through a field data set acquired from field experiments in a inland water environment, and its results were described.

Recently, the emergence of 3D cameras, 3D scanners and various cameras including Lidar is expected to be applied to applications such as AR, VR, and autonomous mobile vehicles that deal with 3D data. In Particular, the 3D point cloud data consisting of tens to hundreds of thousands of 3D points is rapidly increased in capacity compared with 2D data, Efficient encoding / decoding technology for smooth service within a limited bandwidth, and efficient service provision technology for differentiating the area of interest and the surrounding area are needed. In this paper, we propose a new quality parameter considering characteristics of 3D point cloud instead of quality change based on assumed video codec in MPEG V-PCC used in 3D point cloud compression, 3D Grid division method and representation for selectively transmitting 3D point clouds according to user's area of interest, and propose a new 3D Manifesto. By using the proposed technique, it is possible to generate more bitrate images, and it is confirmed that the efficiency of network, decoder, and renderer can be increased while selectively transmitting as needed.

In this paper, we propose an efficient image size selection method for video-based point cloud compression. The current MPEG video-based point cloud compression reference encoding process configures a threshold on the size of images while converting point cloud data into images. Because the converted image is compressed and restored by the legacy video codec, the size of the image is one of the main components in influencing the compression efficiency. If the image size can be made smaller than the image size determined by the threshold, compression efficiency can be improved. Here, we studied how to improve the compression efficiency by selecting the best-fit image size generated during video-based point cloud compression. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the encoding time by 6 percent without loss of coding performance compared to the test model 15.0 version of video-based point cloud encoder.
Multi-view images, which are widely used for providing free-viewpoint services, can enhance the quality of synthetic views when the number of views increases. However, there needs an efficient representation method because of the tremendous amount of data. In this paper, we propose a method for generating point cloud data for the efficient representation of multi-view color and depth images. The proposed method conducts sequential reconstruction of point clouds at each viewpoint as a method of deleting duplicate data. A 3D point of a point cloud is projected to a frame to be reconstructed, and the color and depth of the 3D point is compared with the pixel where it is projected. When the 3D point and the pixel are similar enough, then the pixel is not used for generating a 3D point. In this way, we can reduce the number of reconstructed 3D points. Experimental results show that the propose method generates a point cloud which can generate multi-view images while minimizing the number of 3D points.
In recent years, the construction industry is getting bigger and more complex, so it is becoming difficult to acquire point cloud data for construction equipments and workers. Point cloud data is measured using a drone and MMS(Mobile Mapping System), and the collected point cloud data is used to create a 3D digital map. In particular, the construction site is located at outdoors and there are many irregular terrains, making it difficult to collect point cloud data. For these reasons, adopting a noise reduction algorithm suitable for the characteristics of the construction industry can affect the improvement of the analysis accuracy of digital maps. This is related to various environments and variables of the construction site. Therefore, this study reviewed and analyzed the existing research and techniques on the noise reduction algorithm. And based on the results of literature review, performance evaluation of major noise reduction algorithms was conducted for digital maps of construction sites. As a result of the performance evaluation in this study, the voxel grid algorithm showed relatively less execution time than the statistical outlier removal algorithm. In addition, analysis results in slope, space, and earth walls of the construction site digital map showed that the voxel grid algorithm was relatively superior to the statistical outlier removal algorithm and that the noise removal performance of voxel grid algorithm was superior and the object preservation ability was also superior. In the future, based on the results reviewed through the performance evaluation of the noise reduction algorithm of this study, we will develop a noise reduction algorithm for 3D point cloud data that reflects the characteristics of the construction site.

In this paper, we propose a system termed ForestLi that can accurately estimate the diameter at breast height (DBH) and tree height using LiDAR point cloud data. The ForestLi system processes LiDAR point cloud data through the following steps: downsampling, outlier removal, ground segmentation, ground height normalization, stem extraction, individual tree segmentation, and DBH and tree height measurement. A commercial system, such as LiDAR360, for processing LiDAR point cloud data requires the user to directly correct errors in lower vegetation and individual tree segmentation. In contrast, the ForestLi system can automatically remove LiDAR point cloud data that correspond to lower vegetation in order to improve the accuracy of estimating DBH and tree height. This enables the ForestLi system to reduce the total processing time as well as enhance the accuracy of accuracy of measuring DBH and tree height compared to the LiDAR360 system. We performed an empirical study to confirm that the ForestLi system outperforms the LiDAR360 system in terms of the total processing time and accuracy of measuring DBH and tree height.

Earthwork automation has emerged as a promising technology in the construction industry, and the application of earthwork automation technology is starting from the acquisition and processing of point cloud data of the site. Point cloud data has more than a million data due to vast extent of the construction site, and the processing time of the original point cloud data is critical because it takes tens or hundreds of hours to generate a Digital Terrain Model (DTM), and enhancement of the processing time can largely impact on the efficiency of the modeling. Currently, a benchmark program (BP) is actively used for the purpose of both point cloud data processing and BIM design as an integrated program in Korea, however, there are some aspects to be modified and refined. This study modified the BP, and developed an updated program by adopting a compile-based development environment, newly designed UI/UX, and OpenGL while maintaining existing PCD processing functions, and expended compatibility of the PCD file formats. We conducted a comparative test in terms of loading speed with different number of point cloud data, and the results showed that 92 to 99% performance increase was found in the developed program. This program can be used as a foundation for the development of a program that reduces the gap between design and construction by integrating PCD and earthwork BIM functions in the future.
The recent advent of increasingly affordable and powerful 3D scanning devices capable of capturing high resolution range data about real-world objects and environments has fueled research into effective 3D surface reconstruction techniques for rendering the raw point cloud data produced by many of these devices into a form that would make it usable in a variety of application domains. This paper, therefore, provides an overview of the existing literature on surface reconstruction from 3D point clouds. It explains some of the basic surface reconstruction concepts, describes the various factors used to evaluate surface reconstruction methods, highlights some commonly encountered issues in dealing with the raw 3D point cloud data and delineates the tradeoffs between data resolution/accuracy and processing speed. It also categorizes the various techniques for this task and briefly analyzes their empirical evaluation results demarcating their advantages and disadvantages. The paper concludes with a cross-comparison of methods which have been evaluated on the same benchmark data sets along with a discussion of the overall trends reported in the literature. The objective is to provide an overview of the state of the art on surface reconstruction from point cloud data in order to facilitate and inspire further research in this area.

Due to the growth of VR industry and rise of digital twin industry, the importance of implementing 3D data same as real space is increasing. However, the fact that it requires expertise personnel and huge amount of time is a problem. In this paper, we propose a system that generates point cloud data with same shape and color as a real space, just by scanning the space. The proposed system integrates 3D geometric information from lidar and color information from stereo camera into one point cloud. Since the number of 3D points generated by lidar is not enough to express a real space with good quality, some of the pixels of 2D image generated by camera are mapped to the correct 3D coordinate to increase the number of points. Additionally, to minimize the capacity, overlapping points are filtered out so that only one point exists in the same 3D coordinates. Finally, 6DoF pose information generated from lidar point cloud is replaced with the one generated from camera image to position the points to a more accurate place. Experimental results show that the proposed system easily and quickly generates point clouds very similar to the scanned space.
