  • Characteristic functions play an important role in probability and statistics; however, a rigorous derivation of these functions requires contour integration, which is unfamiliar to most statistics students. Without resorting to contour integration, Datta and Ghosh (2007) derived the characteristic functions of normal, Cauchy, and double exponential distributions. Here, we derive the characteristic functions of t, truncated normal, skew-normal, and skew-t distributions. The characteristic functions of normal, cauchy distributions are obtained as a byproduct. The derivations are straightforward and can be presented in statistics masters theory classes.

  • This paper presents a methodology to find the profit maximized Nash Equilibriums of each generator(or GenCo), which considers the Ramp-rate of each generator under a competitive market environment. The ramp-rate of a generator is one of the physical or technical constraints of a generator and means the ability to increase or decrease the output instantaneously. In this paper, we found several Nash Equilibriums of the generation allocation problem through Dynamic Programming in a competitive market. Individual generators participate in a game to maximize its profit through competitions and play a game with bidding strategies of its generation quantities in a spot market.

  • Phytochromes are red and far-red light absorbing photoreceptors for photomorphogenesis in plants. The red/far wavelength reversible biliproteins are made up of two structural domains. The light-perceiving function of the photoreceptor resides in the N-terminal domain, whereas the signal transducing regulatory function is located within the C-terminal domain. The characteristic role of the phytochromes as phtosensory molecular switches is derived from the phototransformation between two distinct spectral forms, the red light absorbing Pr and the far-red light absorbing Pfr forms. The photoinduced Pr Pfr phototransformation accompanies subtle conformational changes throughout the phytochrome molecule. The conformational signals are subsequently transmitted to the C-terminal domain through various inter-domain crosstalks and induce the interaction of the activated C-terminal domain with phytochrome interacting factors. Thus the inter-domain crosstalks play critical roles in the photoactivation of the phytochromes. Posttranslational modifications, such as the phosphorylation of Ser-598, are also involved in this process through conformational changes and by modulating inter-domain signaling.

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces a variety of bacteriocidal substances including pyocins that are active against the same species, but their physiological roles are relatively unknown. Here, we profiled the bacteriocidal activities in the culture supernatants of various P. aeruginosa isolates and describe the competitive growth advantages of strains PAO1 and PA14 over some strains including PAK, which are sensitive to their bacteriocidal activities. These findings suggest that the factors governing the production of pyocins and the resistance to them play important roles in controlling P. aeruginosa populations in its local environments.

  • Asthma is recognized as a complex disease resulting from interactions between multiple genetic and environmental factors. Accumulating evidence suggests that respiratory viral infections in early life constitute a major environmental risk factor for the development of childhood asthma. Respiratory viral infections have also been recognized as the most common cause of asthma exacerbation. The advent of molecular diagnostics to detect respiratory viruses has provided new insights into the role of human rhinovirus (HRV) infections in the pathogenesis of asthma. However, it is still unclear whether HRV infections cause asthma or if wheezing with HRV infection is simply a predictor of childhood asthma. Recent clinical and experimental studies have identified plausible pathways by which HRV infection could cause asthma, particularly in a susceptible host, and exacerbate disease. Airway epithelial cells, the primary site of infection and replication of HRV, play a key role in these processes. Details regarding the role of genetic factors, including ORMDL3, are beginning to emerge. This review discusses recent clinical and experimental evidence for the role of HRV infection in the development and exacerbation of childhood asthma and the potential underlying mechanisms that have been proposed.

  • The safety accidents of domestic construction happened more than other industries is performed only under the construction stage. In the foreign countries, however, owners and designers play an important role on safety in an early stage. Therefore, numerous studies were carried out by getting rid of accident risks and institutionalizing prevention activities in an construction stages. Accordingly, this study have performed to deduce the pivotal point of safety management items classified by the subject suitable for construction by introducing of safety conception of domestic and international design and suggested the improvement methods of safety management plans of the planning design stage so as to perform more efficient safety management.

  • It is necessary to use the pavement condition index which evaluates the conditions of pavement objectively and is utilized for effective pavement management. PSI, MCI, UPCI are currently used indices, however, they do not play a role as general indices due to their unfair considerations only for users or managers. Thus, this paper pointed out the problems of current indices and developed a new pavement condition index. Also, a sensitivity analysis on the material properties was conducted for the proposed index using the real data obtained from fields. The material properties affected the index in order of surface thickness, asphalt viscosity and asphalt content.

  • While the difficulty of the music can be classified by a variety of standard, conventional methods are classified by the subjective judgment based on the experience of many musicians or conductors. Music score is difficult to evaluate as there is no quantitative criterion to determine the degree of difficulty. In this paper, we propose a new classification method for determining the degree of difficulty of the music. In order to determine the degree of difficulty, we convert the score, which is expressed as a traditional music score, into electronic music sheet. Moreover, we calculate information about the elements needed to play sheet music by distance of notes, tempo, and quantifying the ease of interpretation. Calculating a degree of difficulty of the entire music via the numerical data, we suggest the difficulty evaluation of the score, and show the difficulty of music through experiments.

  • In this paper, we introduce the concept of level subgroups of an intuitionistic fuzzy subgroup, and study some properties of level subgroups in the first part of the paper. These level subgroups in turn play an important role in the characterization of all intuitionistic fuzzy subgroups of a prime cyclic group.

  • The formation of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) film reflecting a broadbanded visible spectrum by application of a liquid crystalline coating followed by UV polymerization (photo-curing) is described. Also, the formation of patterned coatings obtained by a sequence of UV exposure steps is discussed. Such coatings play an important role in the improvement of the performance of liquid crystal displays. In order to make these CLC films, we synthesized new cholesteric liquid crystal molecules (Ch-chol) containing the active reaction site to UV light and investigated to broaden the bandwidth of these cholesteric filters based on the various UV treatments.
