  • This paper investigates forces on a charged particle used in the e-paper application. The particles were inserted into the pixels and according to the applied voltage, particles moves up or down to the electrodes. So, to design the e-paper, the force analysis is very important for the stable operation of e-paper. For these purposes, we divided forces into 4 different forces and numerically evaluated each force. From the simulation results, we confirmed that the minimum voltage to detach the particle from the bottom electrode can be obtained for the given condition.

  • For a number of years it has been known that flexural vibration in a beam and plate can be damped by the application of layer of damping (viscoelastic) material that is in turn constrained by a backing layer or foil. In this study, a quantitative analysis of damping of the sandwich beam has been performed by using impact test. The damping is characterized by the loss factor .etha. in which the damping is normalized by imaginary part of the complex bending stiffiness of the beam. Results show that the relative thickness of the sandwich beam gives more effect on the riatural-frequencies and loss factor than the variation of width does. It is also shown that the Ross-Kerwin-Ungar equation and impact test can be effectively used to identify the damping characteristic of the sandwich beam and viscoelastic material.

  • The optimum design of a heat exchanger with porous media insertion is studied in this paper. It is considered that the aluminum foam metal is inserted in a flat plate channel and air flows through it. The influence of the microstructure of the foam metal on the pressure drop and heat transfer is investigated utilizing previous analytical results and existing correlation equations. Design parameters are identified as the unit-cell size and the ligament thickness of the porous medium, and their effects are examined. The results show that there exists optimum microstructure of the porous media maximizing heat transfer with a constant pressure drop. When the increase in the pressure drop is within a practically acceptable range, the increase in the heat transfer is dominated by the increase in the heat transfer area due to the porous medium insertion. Consequently, among the porous media with a constant pressure drop, the heat transfer is maximized with a microstructure with maximum specific surface area.

  • A new PDP cell structure called CSP(Charge Storage Pad) improves the luminous efficiency by 1.6 times and prevents cross talk between adjacent cells. The CSP, which is a conducting material, is inserted between the dielectric layer and the MgO film in the front plate. This CSP produces a longer time-averaged discharge path to get a high luminous efficiency and confines the discharge to prevent cross talk.

  • The underwater explosion which has the high energy brings about the shock wave and the pulsating gas bubble. In general, structural vibration from the shock wave is more serious than the pulsating gas bubble. This shock wave may damage the important fragile structures and equipment in ship. This paper demonstrates that the shock wave propagating the structure can be reduced by ER inserts. The wave transmission of ER inserted beam is theoretically derived using Mead & Markus model, and the theoretical results are composed with the finite element analysis results. To experimentally verify the ER insert, ER insert in an aluminum plate is made and two piezoceramic disks are used as transmitter and receiver. Details of the experiment are addressed.

  • Periprosthetic fracture after total elbow replacement surgery is a difficult complication to manage, especially when it comes together with implant loosening. If stem revision and internal fixation of the periprosthetic fracture are performed simultaneously, this would be a very challenging procedure. Most of total elbow replacement implants are cemented type. Cement usage at periprosthetic fracture site may interfere healing of fractured site. Authors underwent internal fixation with use of locking plate and cerclage wire for periprosthetic fracture, allogenous fibular strut bone inserted into the humerus intramedullary canal allowing the fractured site to be more stable without cement usage. At 10-month follow-up, the complete union and good clinical outcome was achieved. We present a novel technique for treating periprosthetic fracture with implant loosening after total elbow replacement surgery, using intramedullary allogenous fibula strut bone graft.

  • The rubber seal is a part inserted into servo cylinder to keep the air pressure constant. In order for efficient movements of the servo cylinder, the frictional coefficient of the rubber seal needs to be minimized while the sealing is maintained. In this work the friction characteristics of rubber seal specimen are tested on metal plate at various conditions. The experimental conditions include roughness level, applied pressure, lubrication, and rubbing speed. The design of experiment approach is taken to assess the effect of each parameter. The nonlinear frictional response of the rubber is applied to the FEM model simulating the servo cylinder movement. The result demonstrates that precise optimization of the servo cylinder movement must be preceded by preliminary experiments coupled with the theory and FEM model.

  • The objectives of this study are to present a proper mathematical model for a thermoelectric cooler equipped with the spacer and to investigate the effect of its geometries by heat transfer analysis. In order to enhance the efficiency of the thermoelectric cooler, the spacer is inserted between TEM (thermoelectric module) and cold plate. The theoretical results show that the COP (coefficient of performance) increases nonlinearly as high as 0.63 with increasing the depth of spacer and the depth of TEM and with decreasing the area of insulator.

  • Purpose: Pincer nail is a relatively rare deformity characterized by an increase in transverse curvature along the longitudinal axis of the nail. This curvature commonly increases from proximal to distal end of nail, leading to pinching, curling, and distortion of the underlying soft tissue and resulting frequently in severe pain. Numerous surgical procedures have been reported. Preserving the width of the nail in the correction of the pincer nail is very important for functional and aesthetic reasons. We report the results of the correction of the pincer nail using autogenous dermofat graft with a good result. Methods: From May 2006 to September 2008, dermofat graft was performed in 6 patients with pincer nail. Patients were four women and two men, and the average age was 51. The affected digits were the unilateral great toes in four patients and the unilateral thumbs in two patients. Average follow-up period was 13 months. Surgical procedure was removal of nail using an elevator to avoid damage to the nail bed. An incision was created in distal portion of hyponychium. Paronychium was dissected from distal phalanx by periosteal elevator through incision of hyponychium and tunnel was made. Then dermofat grafts harvested from inguinal area were inserted into the tunnel. Finally, a silicone sheet was inserted eponychial fold for prevention of synechia. Objective assessment was evaluated by use of the width index and height index. Results: All patients reported resolution of the pain and soft tissue pinching sensation that they had before the operation. There was good adherence between the nail plate and the underlying nail bed. The nails have regrown and were corrected in a normal and flattened appearance. The width index and height index were improved. Conclusion: The autogenous dermofat graft seems to provide an effective treatment of the pincer nail with preservation of the nail matrix.
