  • A new experimental technique was developed on the plate-inserted welded tubular joints of spatial grid structures. In the experimental technique, a microcomputer controlling instrument of moire intervention (MCIMI) was adopted. A test was designed on the plate-inserted welded tubular joints of spatial grid structures to show the effectiveness of the MCIMI technique. Both traditional electrical measuring technique and MCIMI technique were employed in the test. The test results showed that the MCIMI technique was feasible in the case of the complicated tests on steel structures. The MCIMI technique not only implemented the limitation of traditional electrical measuring technique, but also improved the accuracy of the test. According to the test results, we further examined the plate-inserted welded tubular joints in the cable-stayed spatial grids of the Binhai International Convention & Exhibition in Tianjin, China. The analysis showed the joints are safely designed with adequate conservatism. The research provided a new application of MCIMI in the field of large-scale structure engineering.

  • When a insulator plate is inserted to the discharge path of a space discharge gap in which the field strength is not uniform, the spark voltage under the atmospheric pressure between the electrodes decreases or rises according to the position of the insulating plate. Also it is reported that if a metallic barrier plate is inserted to the discharge path of the same space discharge gap, similar variations of spark voltage are found. Speaking briefly, mensioned above are the spark voltage characteristics when an insulator or metallic barrier is inserted to the space discharge gap. Also some experimental results, concerning to the surface creepage flash over characteristics at the case when an insulator barrier is inserted to the discharge path of a surface creepage discharge gap, were reported by Peek. But up to now there are no reports on surface flash over voltage characteristics at the case when a metallic barrier is inserted to the surface creepage gap. In this study the effects of a conducting metallic barrier inserted to the path of a surface creepage discharge gap on the flash over voltage characteristics are investigated theoretically and experimentally, and got some important results, clearing the effects of the position and width of a conducting barrier is inserted, the surface flash over voltage characteristics appear as an Inverse N or W Characteristics. Such theoretical or experimental results may have some relation not only with the effects of dry belt and snow on suspension insulators, but also with the effects of dirty zone or water drops on the surface creepage flash over voltage.

  • In this paper, the isolation of the IBBD array antenna is analyzed as functions of the element spacing and the height of the flat plate inserted between array elements for the intelligent antenna system. It is found that the isolation between array elements improves with increasing the array spacing. The array configuration with the plate between the elements is enhanced by about 13 dB more In the isolation than the one without the plate. The plate-inserted $4{\times}4$ elements IBBD array antennas are fabricated and the radiation characteristics are measured and analyzed for the various heights of the plate. It is found that the gain decreases slightly with increasing the height of plate but the shape of radiation pattern does not show a remarkable change.

  • Limited information is available on the degradation of volatile hydrocarbons determined via the use of plate-inserted photocatalytic reactors. This has led to the evaluation of surface areas of cylindrical continuous-flow photocatalytic reactors for the degradation of three selected aromatic hydrocarbons. Three types of reactors were prepared: a double cylinder-type, a single cylindrical-type without plates and a single cylindrical-type with inserted glass tubes. According to diffuse reflectance, FTIR and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, the surface characteristics of a coated photocatalyst were very similar to those of raw $TiO_2$, thereby suggesting that the coated photocatalyst exhibited the same photocatalytic activity as the raw $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic degradation efficiencies were significantly or slightly higher for the single cylinder-type reactor than for the double cylinder-type reactor which had a greater catalytic surface area. However, for all target compounds, the degradation efficiencies increased gradually when the number of plates was increased. Accordingly, it was suggested that the surface area being enhanced for the plate-inserted reactor would elevate the photocatalytic degradation efficiency effectively. In addition, this study confirmed that both initial concentrations of target compounds and flow rates were important parameters for the photocatalytic removal mechanism of these plate-inserted photocatalytic reactors.

  • In this study, we will develop a hybrid cross-sectional shape of steel inserted type glued-laminated timber that can improve the strength of structural glued-laminated timber and maximize the ductility by using steel plate with excellent tensile and deformation ability. A total of three specimens were fabricated and the flexural performance test was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the steel inserted type glued-laminated timber. In order to compare the effect of steel inserted glued-laminated timber, one structural glued-laminated timber test specimen composed of pure wood was manufactured. In addition, in order to evaluate the adhesion performance of the steel inserted, one each of a screw joint test specimen and a polyurethane joint test specimen was prepared. As a result, all the specimens showed the initial crack in the finger joint near the force point. This has been shown to be a cause of crack diffusion and strength degradation. The use of finger joints in the maximum moment section is considered to affect the strength and ductility of the glued-laminated timber beam. Polyurethane-adhesive steel inserted glued-laminated timber showed fully-composite behavior with little horizontal separation between the steel plate and glued-laminated timber until the maximum load was reached. This method has been shown to exhibit sufficient retention bending performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the cause and risk factors of removing bone plateby investigating and analyzing 359 patients who underwent reduction of fracture or orthognathic surgery with bone plate insertion over the past 3 years. Patients were evaluated with respect to age, smoking status, reason for insertion of plates, the numbers of inserted plates, sites of insertion, time between insertion and removal, reasons for removal of plates. The removal rate of bone plates was 33.1%. Of these, 17.0% of patients had clinical symptoms which led to remove plates. The removal rate of men was 29.9% and the rate of women was 39.2%. There were high removal rates from less than 20s (45.8%) and 20s (34.4%) those who are relatively young age group. On the other hand people in their 50s had a removal rate of 27.8% which was higher than those in their 60s with a rate of 20.7%. The removal rate of bone plate inserted into the mandible was 33.5%, and the removal rate of bone plate inserted into the maxilla was 34.7%. The mean period between the insertion and removal of bone plate was 10.9 months. The main reason for the removal of bone plate was the patient's requirement (44.5%). The most common cause of clinical symptoms was infection (22.7%). Infection was manifested within about a year and led to the plate being removed. Therefore, lowering the possibility of infection after surgery could decrease the removal rate of bone plate.

  • Recently the LNG(liquified natural gas) public buses have been introduced to prevent the air pollution in metropolitan areas. As the LNG temperature in fuel tank is as low as $-162^{\circ}C$. the thermal and structural effects of tank components need to be studied for safe introduction in the market. Especially the support system of LNG fuel tank in vehicle, which has connected with inside and outside of tanks, should put attention to reduce the structural stress due to cryogenic temperature and to restrict the heat flux from ambient. There are two supporting systems in the tank, that one is connected between inside and outside tanks by welding, and the other is the inserted support system which is a cylindrical SUS bar inserted in a hole of the supporting plate. In this study the temperature distribution and thermal stress of the inserted support system were evaluated by using the utility program as ANSYS. The results showed that the rate of heat transfer to inner tank through this support system was quite small due to limited contact of support bar with plate. but the thermal stress of support plate was obtained beyond the limited tensile value of SUS304. The cautious design for the support plate part, therefore, should be given to make the safe support system of LNG vehicle fuel tank.

  • Composite bipolar plates offer several advantages of low cost, light weight, and ease of manufacturing compared to traditional graphite plate. However, it is difficult to achieve both high electrical conductivity and high flexural strength. In this study, the hybrid carbons filled epoxy composite bipolar plates were fabricated to test electrical conductivity and flexural properties. Graphite powders were used as the main conducting filler and continuous carbon fiber fabrics were inserted to improve the mechanical properties of the composite. This hybrid composite showed improved in-plane electrical conductivity and flexural property. The moldability of the hybrid composite was also improved comparing to the continuous prepreg composite. This study suggested that the continuous carbon fiber inserted graphite/epoxy composites can be a potential candidate material to overcome the disadvantages of conventional graphite composite or continuous prepreg composite bipolar plates.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the sound distortion following the alternation of the palatal plate thickness. For this study, 2 healthy male subjects (24-year-old) were selected. Born in Seoul, they both spoke Seoul dialect. First, their sounds of /na(나)/, /da(다)/, /1a(라)/, /ja(자)/, /cha(차)/, /ta(타)/, without inserting plates were recorded, and then the sounds with palatal plates of different thickness were recorded, successively. The plate was fabricated in 3 types, each palatal thickness being 1.0mm, 2.5mm, dentoalveolar portion 2.5mm, other residual portion was 1.0mm, successively. Each type plates named B, C, D-type, in succession. Series of analysis were administered through Computer(16 bit) to analyze the sound distortions. These experiments were analyzed by the LPC (without weighting, pre-weighting, post-weighting) of the consonants, vowels portion, formant frequency of the vowels and word duration of the consonants. The findings led to the following conclusions: 1. There was no correlation of the distortion rate on the 2 informants. 2. Generally, vowels were not affected by the palatal plate thickness in the formant analysis, however, more distortion was detected in the LPC analysis, especially C, D-type plates. 3. Consonants distortion was more evident in the C, D-type plate. 4. The second formant was most disturbed and reduced in the all consonants with insertion of the palatal plate, especially C, D-type plate. 5. Word duration was shortened in the plate inserted(except /ja/, /cha/), especially C, D-type. 6. It was found that dentoalveolar, hard palatal sounds were severely distorted in plate inserted, and they were mainly affected by the dentoalveolar portion thickness. 7. There was correlation between palatal thickness and consonants quality.
