To reveal subsurface structures of the Ulsan fault, seismic data were recorded along a 750-m long line near Nongso-Eup in Ulsan. P and S waves were generated simultaneously by impacting a 5 kg sledgehammer on a tilted plate. The data were received by 16 10-Hz 3-component geophones at 3 m intervals. Refracted P waves were inverted using the tomography method. Dip moveout and migration were applied to reflection data processed following a general sequence. Four layers were identified based on P-wave velocities and P- and S-wave stacked image. From top to bottom, the P-wave velocity of each layer ranges in $300{\sim}1100\;m/s$, $1100{\sim}1700\;m/s$, $1700{\sim}2700\;m/s$, and greater than 2700 m/s. The corresponding thickness of the top three layers averages 3.9 m, 5.9 m, 4.4 m, respectively. The S-wave stack section is effective to define subsurface structures shallower than 10 m.

Based on the hydroelastic theory and the matched eigenfunction expansion method(MEEM), the dynamic behavior of the porous flexible net sheet and wave forces have been investigated in monochromatic waves. The net sheet is installed vertically with the submergence depth. Top end of a net sheet is fixed and its lower end is attached by a clump weight. It is assumed that the initial tension is sufficiently large so that the effects of dynamictension variation can be neglected. The boundary condition on the porous flexible net sheet is derived based on Darcy's fine-pore model and body boundary condition. The developed analytic model can be extended to the impermeable/permeable vertical plate and the impermeable flexible membrane. The analytical model was used to study the influence of design parameters(wave characteristics, porosity, submergence depth, initial tension) on the response characteristics and wave load of the net sheet.

For the application of Lamb wave to structural health monitoring(SHM), understanding its physical characteristic and interaction between Lamb wave and defect of the host structure is an important issue. In this study, reflected, transmitted and mode converted Lamb waves at discontinuity of a plate structure were simulated and the amplitude ratios are calculated theoretically using Modal decomposition method. The predicted results were verified comparing with finite element method(FEM) and experimental results simulating attached PZTs. The result shows that the theoretical prediction is close to the FEM and the experimental verification. Moreover, quantitative estimation method was suggested using amplitude ratio of Lamb wave at discontinuity.

Electro-hydraulic transmission (HST) and an electronic control system was designed, and performance of the components were investigated through indoor tests. When input values for HST swash plate control were given at 3 levels (5, 10, 13 degrees) in forward and reverse directions, the errors were less than 0.6 degrees. Response time was in ranges of 0.14 ~ 0.16 s and 0.16 ~ 0.2 s for forward and reverse direction controls while driving, and the values were 0.23 ~ 0.25 s and 0.18 ~ 0.23 s at static condition, respectively. Similar experiments for left and right steering resulted errors less than 0.5 degrees. Resonse time was in ranges of 0.16 ~ 0.22 s and 0.11 ~ 0.23 s for left and right turns while driving, and the values were 0.07 ~ 0.21 s and 0.09 ~ 0.14 s at static condition, respectively. From frequency response experiments, control system appeared to follow sine waves appropriately at frequencies less than 0.8 Hz with gain of 0.11 dB and 0.09 dB for forward and reverse direction controls, respectively, and the gain decreased above the frequency. Phase difference showed a gradual increase and were less than 45 degree up to 0.8 Hz. Similar experiments for left and right streering showed that the control system appeared to follow sine waves appropriately at frequencies less than 0.8 Hz with gain of 0.28 dB and 0.26 dB for left and right steering controls, respectively, and the gain decreased above the frequency. Phase difference showed a gradual increase and were less than 45 degree up to 0.8 Hz, which was the same as for the forward and reverse controls.

There are many types of circularly polarized(CP) microstrip antenna elements, which are used as a good unit radiator. Since an advantage of CP antenna is no strict alignment requirements between Rx and Tx system, the printed antennas with circular polarization are very often used in numerous satellite and mobile radio systems. In order to realize the broad bandwidth of 3 dB axial ratio and impedance of CP microstrip antenna, complex feed structure and tri-plate patch element have been researched. This paper describes a design of wideband microstrip cross slot array antennas with circular polarization. The proposed antenna is composed of an open-ended microstrip feed line as a feeder and a cross slot as a radiator for circular polarization. To realize the wide bandwidth, tri-plate structure are considered and cross slot is electromagnetically coupled with feed line. Optimum parameters of 1-element cross slot antenna are analyzed and designed by method of moments. These parameters are also applied to may antennas design considered the mutual coupling between radiating elements. Right hand circular polarization(RHCP) and left hand circular polarization(LHCP) of the proposed antenna are easily controlled by asymmetrical cross slot structure and slot position. In 1-element and 15-element cross slot array antenna, the good axial ratio of 1 dB below and the broad bandwidth characteristics of antenna are obtained.

Cavities behind concrete walls can adversely affect the stability of structures. Thus study aims to detect cavities behind concrete structures using a microphone in a laboratory model test. A small-scale concrete wall is constructed in a chamber, which is composed of a reinforced concrete plate and dry soil. A plastic bowl is then placed between the plate and soil to simulate a cavity behind the concrete structure. Leaky surface acoustic waves are generated by impacting the concrete plate using a hammer and are measured using a microphone. The measured signals are analyzed using natural frequencies, and cavity-free sections are evaluated. The test results show that the first natural frequency decreases at the cavity section due to the flexural vibration behavior of the plate. In addition, the amplitude corresponding to the first natural frequency decreases as the measurement location becomes farther from the cavity center and significantly decreases at the measurement locations near the rebars. This study demonstrates that a microphone may be useful to detect cavities behind concrete walls.

In this paper, the group velocity dispersion curves of the $S_o$ symmetric mode in unidirectional CFRP plate was calculated as varying the propagating direction. The group velocity curve was obtained with the group velocities of the $S_o$ symmetric mode corresponding to 0.2 MHz-mm under the first cut-off frequency in the dispersion curves, and corrected by introducing the slowness curve. The velocities of the $S_o$ symmetric mode in the unidirectional CFRP plate were measured as varying the propagating direction and compared with the col?rotted group velocity curve. The measured velocities were good agreement with the corrected group velocity curve except near the fiber direction which was called the cusp region. It implies that the direction of the group velocities incline toward the fiber direction of the unidirectional CFRP plates when the propagation direction is not accorded with the principal axis. It is supposed that this phenomenon rerults from the preferential propagating the energy toward the direction with the faster propagation velocity.

For last decades, the rapid coastal erosion process spreading along Korean peninsular has become a nuisance especially for tourism and local economy. Global warming and sea-level rise demand persistently new coastal protection strategies against the conventional methods using armored structures. In a view of this, Kweon et al. (2007) has proposed a new type of horizontal steel plates for an ideal candidate as eco-friendly detached breakwater systems for global warming era. The breakwater is composed of piles and horizontal porous plates that was devised for the optimized blockage effects and wave energy dissipations. This system provides outstanding performances as wave barrier and added advantages such as a rapid installation, an easy relocation, a perfect water circulation for the stagnation of pollutions in sheltered regions. The present experimental study focuses on the performance evaluations of the proposed system in wind wave conditions as a wave dissipator and reflector. The reflection, transmission, and energy dissipation of the random waves has been discussed in detail based on a newly proposed relation between wave steepness and a plate width normalized by wave length that are major factors affecting the wave transmission.

In this study, a numerical methodology is proposed for evaluating valve flow noise in a pipe conveying high pressure gas, and the effects of perforated plates on reduction of such valve flow noise are quantitatively analyzed. First, high-accurate unsteady compressible Large Eddy Simulation techniques are utilized to predict flow and flow noise by a valve in a high-pressure pipe. The validity of the numerical result is confirmed by comparing the predicted wall pressure spectrum with the measured one. Next, the acoustic power of downstream-propagating acoustic waves due to the valve flow is analyzed using an acoustic power formula for acoustic waves propagating on mean flow in a pipe. Based on the analysis results, perforated plates are designed and installed downstream of the valve to suppress the valve flow noise and the acoustic power of downstream-going acoustic waves is predicted by using the same numerical procedure. The reduction by 9.5 dB is confirmed by comparing the predicted result with that of the existing system. Based on these results, the current numerical methodology is expected to be used to reduce valve flow noise in an existing system as well as in a design stage.
Change in the cortical thickness of long bones occurring with aging and osteoporosis is known to be a risk factor for fracture. The present study aims to investigate the dependencies of phase velocities of ultrasonic guided waves on the cortical thickness in 7 soft tissue-bone mimicking phantoms consisting of acrylic plates covered by a 2 mm-thick silicone rubber layer by using the axial transmission technique with a pair of transducers with a center frequency of 200 kHz and a diameter of 12.7 mm. Two distinct propagating waves with different velocities, the First Arriving Signal (FAS) and the Slow Guided Waved (SGW), were consistently observed for all the soft tissue-bone mimicking phantoms. The FAS velocity decreased slightly with increasing thickness, whereas the SGW velocity increased strongly with increasing thickness. The FAS and the SGW velocities were found to be closely consistent with the S0 and the A0 Lamb mode velocities for a free acrylic plate, respectively, suggesting that the presence of the soft tissue mimicking material (2 mm-thick silicone rubber layer) covering the acrylic plates does not influence significantly the velocity measurements.
