Recent developments such as concern over global warming, depletion of fossil fuels and increase in energy demands by the increasing world population has eventually lead to mass production of electricity using renewable sources. Apart from wind and solar, ocean holds tremendous amount of untapped energy in forms such as geothermal vents, tides and waves. The current study looks at generating power using waves and the focus is on the primary energy conversion (first stage conversion) of incoming waves for different models. Observation of flow characteristics and the velocity in the augmentation channel as well as the front guide nozzle are presented in the paper. A numerical wave tank was used to simulate the waves and after obtaining the desired wave properties; the augmentation channel plus the front guide nozzle and rear chamber were integrated to the numerical wave tank. The waves in the numerical wave tank were generated by a piston type wave maker which was located at the wave tank inlet. The inlet which was modeled as a plate wall moved sinusoidally with the general function, x=asin$\omega$t The augmentation channel consisted of a front nozzle, rear nozzle and an internal fluid region representing the turbine housing. The analysis was performed using the commercial CFD code ANSYS-CFX.
Nondestructive inspection (NDI) is an integral part of structural integrity analyses of dry storage casks that house spent nuclear fuel. One significant concern for the structural integrity is stress corrosion cracking in the heat-affected zone of welds in the stainless steel canister that confines the spent fuel. In situ NDI methodology for detection of stress corrosion cracking is investigated, where the inspection uses a delivery robot because of the presence of the harsh environment and geometric constrains inside the cask protecting the canister. Shear horizontal (SH) guided waves that are sensitive to cracks oriented either perpendicular or parallel to the wave vector are used to locate welds and to detect cracks. SH waves are excited and received by electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) using noncontact ultrasonic transduction and pulse-echo mode. A laboratory-scale canister mock-up is fabricated and inspected using the proposed methodology to evaluate the ability of EMATs to excite and receive SH waves and to locate welds. The EMAT's capability to detect notches from various distances is evaluated on a plate containing 25%-through-thickness surface-breaking notches. Based on the results of the distances at which notch reflections are detectable, NDI coverage for spent nuclear fuel storage canisters is determined.
At present, the research on wave propagation in graphene platelet reinforced composite plates focuses on the propagation behavior of bulk waves, in which the effect of boundary condition is ignored, there is no literature report on propagation behaviors of guided waves in graphene platelet reinforced metal foams (GPLRMF) plates. In fact, wave propagation is affected by boundary conditions, so it is necessary to study the propagation characteristics of guided waves. The aim of this paper is to solve this problem. The effective performance of the material was calculated using the mixing law. Equations of motion of GPLRMF plate is derived by using Hamilton's principle. Then, the eigenvalue method is used to obtain the expressions of bending wave, shear wave and longitudinal wave, and the degradation verification is carried out. Finally, the effects of graphene platelets (GPLs) volume fraction, elastic foundation, porosity coefficient, GPLs distribution types and porosity distribution types on the dispersion relations are studied. We find that these factors play an important role in the propagation characteristics and phase velocity of guided waves.

Transient acoustic pressure in the near field of an impacted plate carries information that can be utilized for recovering the impact force history. The inverse calculation approach using BEM-based NAH, which is conventionally used for time harmonic excitation, can be applied for reconstructing the transient waves using the principle of Fourier transform and spectral analysis. Then, using the recovered velocity in normal direction of the plate surface, the corresponding structural intensity can be obtained and the identification of input power can be performed. However, several manipulations should be given to overcome numerical artifacts, such as aliasing and erratic oscillation at discontinuity, and to suppress the effect of noise. Experiment using a simply supported plate is presented for demonstration purpose.

A structural health monitoring technique for locating impact position in a composite plate is presented in this paper. The method employs a single sensor and spatial focusing properties of time reversal(TR) and inverse filtering(IF). We first examine the spatial focusing efficiency of both approaches at the impact position and its surroundings through impact experiments. The imaging results of impact localization show that the impact location can be accurately estimated in any position of the plate. Compared to existing techniques for locating impact or acoustic emission source, the proposed method has the benefits of using a single sensor and not requiring knowledge of anisotropic material properties and geometry of structures. Furthermore, it does not depend on a particular mode of dispersive Lamb waves that is frequently used in other ultrasonic testing of plate-like structures.

Finite Element Method(FEM) is the most popularly used method in analyzing the dynamic behaviors of structures. But unless the number of finite elements is large enough, the results from FEM are somewhat different from exact analytical solutions, especially at high frequency range. On the other hand, as the Spectral Element Method(SEM) deals directly with the governing equations of structures, the results from this method cannot but be exact regardless of any frequency range. However, despite two dimensional structures are more general, the SEM has been applied only to the analysis of one dimensional structures so far. In this paper, therefore, new methodologies are introduced to analyze the two dimensional plate using SEM. The results from this new method are compared with the exact analytical solutions by letting the two dimensional plate be one dimensional one and showed the dynamic responses of two dimensional plate by including various waves propagated into x-direction.

The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the sloshing and bulging mode for the circular cylindrical storage tank with an annular plate on free surface. The cylindrical tank is filled with an inviscid and incompressible liquid. The liquid domain is limited by a rigid cylindrical surface and a rigid flat bottom. As the effect of free surface waves Is taken into account in the analysis, the bulging and sloshing modes are studied. The solution for the velocity potential of liquid movement is assumed as a suitable harmonic function that satisfies Laplace equation and the relevant boundary conditions. The Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to derive the frequency equation of the cylindrical tank. The effect of Inner-to-outer radius ratio and thickness of annular plate and liquid volume on vibration characteristics of storage tank is studied. The finite element analysis is performed to demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method.
In this paper we study numerically the shock-vortex interaction in the shear layer generated by moving shock waves above and below a flat plate. The faster normal shock is diffracted at the tip of the flat plate, producing a starting vortex. The slower normal shock below the flat plate arrives soon later to run across the vortex and make interaction. The two shocks are merged together and reflected back at the closed end of the shock tube to impinge on the shear layer developing multiple vortexlets. The computational simulation based on Euler and Navier-Stokes equations shows good prediction.

Precision of theoretical group velocity of waves in shell structures was discussed for the purpose of source localization of loose parts impact in pressure vessels of nuclear power plants. Estimating exact location of loose parts impact inside a reactor or a steam generator is very important in safety management of a NPP. Evaluation of correct propagation velocity of impact signals in pressure vessels, most of which are shell structures, is essential in impact source localization. Theoretical group velocities of impact signals in a plate and a shell were calculated by wave equations and compared to the velocities measured experimentally in a plate specimen and a scale model of a nuclear reactor. The wave equation applicable to source localization algorithm in shell structures was chosen by the study.

The wave analysis of cylinders combined rigidly with a finite plate to identify the effect of the plate on the wave propagation. This paper uses the mobility and impedance coupling method to combine a infinite-length cylinder with the plate, and obtains the coupling forces induced by the vibration of the structure. The waveguide finite element method is used to calculate the wave characteristics of the cylinder excited by the forces. From the results, the dispersion diagram can be obtained. It contains the characteristics induced by the vibration and length of the internal plate. It also shows the wave propagation of elastic waves sustained in the cylinder.
