  • The buckling behavior of the web of steel girders are largely dependent on the size and the location of stiffeners and the restraining effect of top and bottom flanges. Elastic and inelastic buckling analyses based or the Spline Finite Strip Method were executed to study the stiffening effect of the longitudinal stiffener on the web of box girders and to find how the top and bottom flanges had effects on the web, where geometric boundary conditions were limited by both hinged, both fixed and the flange sections. The basic assumption for the longitudinal end boundary conditions was that the vertical stiffeners had the rigidity enough to force nil deflection line on the web panel so that the junction line between web and vertical stiffener was assumed to be hinged boundary conditions. The provisions on the longitudinal stiffener of the plate and box girders of the Korean Standard Highway Bridge Specifications(1995) and AASHTO Specifications(1994 LRFD) were compared with the results obtained numerically for the various longitudinal stiffener size of box girders. Simple equations and design curves for the longitudinal stiffener of the web were proposed for the practical use.

  • More than one longitudinal web stiffener may be economical in the design of plate girders that have considerably high width-to-thickness ratio of webs. In this study, the bend-buckling strength of relatively deep webs with two horizontal lines of flat plate-shaped single-sided stiffeners was numerically investigated. Linear eigenvalue buckling analyses were conducted for specially selected hypothetical models of stiffened web panels, in which top and bottom junctions of a web with flanges were assumed to have simply supported boundary conditions. Major parameters in the analyses were the locations of two longitudinal stiffeners, stress ratios in the web, slenderness ratios and aspect ratios of web panels. Based on the application of assumptions on the combined locations of the two longitudinal web stiffeners, simplified equations were proposed for the bend-buckling coefficients and compared to the case of one longitudinal stiffener. It was found that bend-buckling coefficients can be doubled by adopting two longitudinal stiffeners instead of one longitudinal stiffener. For practical design purposes, additional equations were proposed for the required bending rigidity of the longitudinal stiffeners arranged in two horizontal lines on a web.

  • The design of noncomposite construction for skew bridges with large skew angels has been often checked because composite construction may cause large stresses in the bridge deck. In this study, the analytical model considered dynamic behaviors for noncomposite skew bridges was proposed. Using the proposed analytical model, the effects of interactions between the concrete deck and steel girders such as composite construction, and noncomposite construction on the dynamic characteristics of simply supported skew bridges were investigated. A series of parametric studies for the total 27 skew bridges was conducted with respect to parameters such as girder spacing, skew angle, and deck aspect ratio. The slip at the interfaces between the concrete deck and steel girders may bring about longer vibration periods that result in the reduced total seismic base shear.

  • Tests were performed to obtain the flexural capacity of the innovative FRP-Concrete Composite Deck (FCCD) above girders. Test parameters were details of connection parts between FCCD and girder, such as continuity of FRP module, reinforcing ratio of FRP re-bars, and existence of shear connecting plate. As a test result, we found flexural strength of FCCD in the negative zone increases when FRP module is continuous, and reinforcement is increased, and shear connecting plate exists. And the flexural strength of all specimens give enough safety compared to the value needed in Korean highway bridge design code.

  • This study investigates the effects of a bridge deck's width-to-depth (B/H) ratio and turbulence on buffeting response and flutter critical wind speed of long-span bridges by conducting section model tests. A streamlined box section and a plate girder section, each with four B/H ratios, were tested in smooth and turbulent flows. The results show that for the box girders, the response increases with the B/H ratio, especially in the vertical direction. For the plate girders, the vertical response also increases with the B/H ratio. However, the torsional response decreases as the B/H ratio increases. Increasing the B/H ratio and intensity of turbulence tends to improve the bridge's aerodynamic stability. Experimental results obtained from the section model tests agree reasonably with the calculated results obtained from a numerical analysis.

  • The main purpose of this study was to determine whether the inelastic moment-rotation character-istics defined by the lower-bound curve permit economical ALFD for noncompact plate gilders. The study was also intended to determine the benefits of improving the moment-rotation to illustrate the ar plication of the ALFD to noncompact plate girders and to show the Influence of various parameters on the design process. To accomplish these objectives, 34 preliminary designs were made by ALFD or LFD or WSD. In the study, this method of analysis is described first. Next, the design procedures are described. Finally, the resulting designs are presented and discussed.

  • The PSC 2-span-continuous-bridge by Up-Down Method on construction process is used for this research. It is measured the strain of lower-steel-plate at continuous section on the active range of negative moment at the stage of introducing compressive stress to bottom-plate and compared with results of structural analysis. On the basis of these results, it is confirmed the introduced compressive stress tか bottom-plate. The object of this research is presenting the degree of continuity at the stage of lifting up process.

  • In order to investigate the behavior of newly developed PC deck plate bridges, 1/2 scale model specimen was tested under the 2 million cycles of fatigue loading. Forces between PC members were transfered by shear keys located at the faces of deck plate and girders. The test results showed that the test specimen maintained its original strength after 2 million cycles of fatigue loading.

  • In this study, the effects of corrugated webs on the ultimate behavior of horizontally curved I-shaped girders are investigated. Because of the geometric characteristics of corrugated plates, corrugated webs can be used for enhancing torsional and warping stiffness of plate girders. Many researches have been conducted to study the effects of corrugated webs on the ultimate behavior of straight girders. But, the studies of the ultimate behavior of horizontally curved girders with corrugated webs, which generally show out-of plane behavior manly, have been rarely performed so far. By performing inelastic-nonlinear analysis, the ultimate behavior of curved girders with corrugated webs is studied in this paper. Laterally unsupported length and subtended angle of girders, and length of height of corrugation of webs are considered as the geometric parameters which would be expected to affect the ultimate behavior. By this analytical study with considering the geometric parameters, the changes of ultimate behavior and load carrying capacity of curved girders with corrugated webs are investigated. Also, the effects of corrugated webs on the increase of load carrying capacity for curved girders are studied with comparing to the capacity of general curved girders with flat webs. According to the analytical results, corrugated webs can be used to increase the ultimate load carrying capacity of curved girders, because of their high torsional and warping stiffness. But, it is also indicated that they may decrease the load carrying capacity of curved girders which have relatively small subtended angle or initial curvature, because of an accordion effect.

  • There has been a strong demand on more economic and lower depth girder bridges for short and medium span range, PRECOM, which is a new type steel-concrete composite girder, has been developed to realize a more economic bridge system with a lower depth girder. In the PRECOM girder bridge, a steel plate girder is simply supported and then concrete form is hung to girder. Thus, the self-weight of the concrete is loaded to the steel girder. To increase the resistance of concrete in the lower casing against tensile stress, compressive force is introduced by prestressed tendon To evaluate the manufacturability and performances of the completed bridge, four 15-m girders and a bridge specimen with two 20m girders wvere constructed. The camber during the construction and introduction of an appropriate compressive force was evaluated. Dynamic data were obtained through the modal testing of the completed girders. Static loading test was also conducted to examine cracks and evaluate the decrease in stiffness and failure behavior under extreme conditions.
