Damage and overbreak of the remaining rock induced by blasting can not be avoided during tunnel construction which may result in either short-term or long-term tunnel instability. Therefore, in this paper, a methodology to take into account the effect of blast-induced damage in tunnel stability assessment is proposed. Dynamic numerical analysis was executed to evaluate damage and overbreak of the remaining rock for the most common blasting pattern in road tunnel. Rock damage was quantified by utilizing the damage variable factor which is adopted proposed in continuum damage mechanics. The damaged rock stiffness and the damaged failure criteria are used to consider the effect of rock damage in tunnel stability analysis. The damaged geological strength index of the damaged rock was newly proposed from the relationship between deformation modulus and geological strength index. Also the Hoek-Brown failure criteria of the damaged rock was obtained using the damaged geological strength index. Analysing the tunnel stability with the consideration of the blast-induced damage of remaining rock, it was found that the extend of plastic zone and deformation increased compared to the undamaged rock. Therefore the short-term or long-term tunnel stability will be threatened when the rock damage from blasting is ignored in the tunnel stability analysis.

Upon freezing a soil swells due to phase change and its compression stress increase a lot. As the soil undergo thawing, however, it becomes a soft soil layer because the 'soil changes from a solid state to a plastic state. These changes are largely dependent on freezing temperature and repeated freezing-thawing cycle as well as the density of the soil and applied loading condition. This study was initiated to describe the effect of the freezing temperature and repeated freezing-thawing cycle on the unconfined compressive strength. Soil samples were collected at about 20 sites where soil structures were installed in Kangwon provincial area and necessary laboratory tests were conducted. The results could be used to help manage effectively the field structures and can be used as a basic data for designing and constructing new projects in the future. The results were as follows ; 1. Unconfined compressive strength decreased as the number of freezing and thawing cycle went up. But the strength increased as compression speed, water content and temperature decreased. The largest effect on the strength was observed at the first freezing and thawing cycle. 2. Compression strain went up with the increase of deformation speed, and was largely influenced by the number of the freezing-thawing cycle. 3. Secant modulus was responded sensitivefy to the material of the loading plates, increased with decrease of temperature down to - -10$^{\circ}$C, but was nearly constant below the temperature. Thixotropic ratio characteristic became large as compression strain got smaller and was significantly larger in the controlled soil than in the soil treated with freezing and thawing processes 4. Vertical compression strength of ice crystal(development direction) was 3 to 4 times larger than that of perpendicular to the crystal. The vertical compression strength was agreed well with Clausius-Clapeyrons equation when temperature were between 0 to 5C$^{\circ}$, but the strength below - 5$^{\circ}$C were different from the equation and showed a strong dependency on temperature and deformation speed. When the skew was less then 20 degrees, the vertical compression strength was gradually decreased but when the skew was higher than that, the strength became nearly constant. Almost all samples showed ductile failure. As considered above, strength reduction of the soil due to cyclic freezing-thawing prosses must be considered when trenching and cutting the soil to construct soil structures if the soil is likely subject to the processes. Especially, if a soil no freezing-thawing history, cares for the strength reduction must be given before any design or construction works begin. It is suggested that special design and construction techniques for the strength reduction be developed.
In this study, to improve bending strength performance of Korean white pine, we made the curved composite glulam that was reinforced with glass fiber materials and larch lamina. Five types of Korean white pine curved glulams were made depending on whether they had been reinforced or not and how they had been reinforced. Type-A, reference specimen, was produced only with Korean white pine lamina, and Type-B was with larch lamina in the same thickness. Type-C was made by inserting a glass fiber cloth of textile shape between the each layer. Type-D was reinforced with two glass fiber cloths, which were placed inside and outside of the outermost lamina. Type-E was reinforced with GFRP sheet in the same way as Type-D. As a result of this bending strength test, the modulus of rupture (MOR) of Type-B, Type-C and Type-E were increased by 29%, 6%, and 48% in comparison with Type-A. However, MOR of Type-D was decreased by 2% in comparison with Type-A. In the failure modes, Type-A, Type-B and Type-C were totally fractured at the maximum load. However, load values of Type-D and Type-E decreased slowly because of reinforcement of fracture suppression, and the GFRP sheet (Type-E) had better reinforcing effect on compressive stress and tensile stress than the glass fiber cloth (Type-D).

Aircraft needs high lift-to-drag ratio and weight reduction of the structure for long endurance flight with a small power. Generally high aspect ratio wing is applied to HALE(High Altitude Long Endurance) aircraft. Also high modulus, and high strength CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) has been used in primary structures. and thin mylar(membrane material) film has been applied to skin of wing. As a result, wing is more flexible than the other structures. and the stiffness of thin mylar film has an affect on dynamic stability. In this study, the membrane characteristic of mylar film has been simulated using nonlinear gap elements. And equivalent modeling method using shell elements is presented using the nonlinear simulation result. The linear equivalent model has verified using the results of nonlinear membrane method. Proposed linear equivalent shell model has applied to mode analysis for estimate the effect of mylar mechanical properties on natural frequency.
Clay or sand does not exist alone but various sizes of soil are mixed in the field. In this study, the effect of water content on large deformation of such mixed soils is studied by using soil column tests and a particle method. A soil column with 7 cm in diameter and 13 cm in height, which was made out of kaolinite with sand content of 0, 10, 25, or 50%, was tested for large deformation. Its deformation was monitored with time. While increasing its water content from 40, 60, to 80%, a total of 12 types of soil column tests were carried out. The particle method simulated their deformation with time. A maximum plastic shear modulus, which was a function of undrained shear strength and plasticity index for soils with different water contents, was associated with soil viscosity to simulate large deformation of soil column. When a sand content of soil column was constant, the deformation of soil column increased with increasing water content. When a water content of soil column was constant, large deformation occurred with increasing the sand content. The maximum deformation, which was 22 cm in diameter, was observed in the case of water content of 80% and sand content of 50%. The particle method was able to relatively well simulate such large deformation and stress change of soils.

Waste bumpers from out-of-service vehicles are recycled in the manufacturing process of plastic parts by incorporating pristine materials after removing the coated paint on a bumper. This study examined the chemical properties and mechanical properties of a mixture of recycled bumper and pristine materials as a function of the mixing ratio. When the pristine materials and the recycled bumper pieces were mixed, the stiffness (tensile strength and the flexural modulus) was provided by their composition averages. On the other hand, the toughness (Izod impact strength and the elongation-at-break) was lower than their composition averages (i.e., negative deviation). FTIR analysis showed that these results were due to the absence of the compatibility between the pristine materials and recycled bumper pieces. When the recycled bumper pieces were loaded at more than 30 wt. %, the toughness decreased drastically. A previous study showed that a paint removal efficiency up to 80 wt.% was easily attainable. The other 20 wt.% of paint on the bumper is very difficult to remove. Therefore, this study examined the mechanical properties of a mixture of recycled bumper pieces containing the unremoved paint and recycled bumper pieces without paint. When the recycled bumper pieces containing the unremoved paint were incorporated in only small quantities, the mechanical properties were decreased to a great extent. These results show that the paint removal efficiency is very important in the recycled bumper industry.

In this study, the rheological characteristics and of 3D printing composite materials and the compressive strength characteristics according to the lamination patterns were evaluated. As a result of rheology test, rapid material change was observed after 60 minutes of extrusion, yielding stress 1.4 times higher than immediately after mixing, and plastic viscosity was 14.94-25.62% lower. The compressive strength of the specimens manufactured in the mold and the laminated specimens were compared, and the lamination pattern of the laminated specimens were 0°, 45°, and 90° as variables. The compressive strength of the mold casting specimen and the laminated specimen from 1 to 28 days of age showed similar performance regardless of the lamination pattern. In particular, at the age of 28 days, the modulus of elasticity, maximum compressive strength, and strain at maximum stress of all specimens were almost the same. In order to analyze the interface of the laminated specimens, X-ray CT analysis of the specimen whose compressive strength were measured was performed. Through CT analysis, it was confirmed that cracks did not occur at the lamination interface, which can be judged that the interface in the laminated specimen behaved in an integrated manner.

The performance of carbon fiber is important for the production of these high-quality polymer composite materials such as CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). For this purpose, it is essential to use an optimized spinning process for improving the mechanical, physical, and structural properties of the precursor fiber, which greatly affects the properties of the carbon fiber, and the use of a suitable precursor polymer. In this study, the content of MAA (Methacrylic Acid), MAA injection time, and concentration of AIBN (2,2'-Azobis(2-methylpropionitrile)) were set as parameters for the polymer synthesis process, and Poly(AN-co-MAA) (poly(acrylonitrile-co-methacrylic acid)) was polymerized by solution polymerization. Poly(AN-co-MAA) with a molecular weight of 305,138 g/mol and an MAA ratio of 4.2% was dissolved in DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) at a concentration of 16.0 wt%, and then a precursor fiber was prepared through dry-jet-wet spinning. The precursor fiber had a tensile strength of ~1.06 GPa and a tensile modulus of ~22.01 GPa, and no voids and structural defects were observed on the fiber.

Various numerical analysis models can be used to evaluate the behavior characteristics of tunnel facilities which are representative underground structures. In general, the Mohr-Coulomb model, which is most often used for numerical analysis, is an elastic-perfect plastic behavior model. And the deformation characteristics are the same during the load increase-load reduction phase. So there is a problem that the displacement may appear different from the field situation in the case of excavation analysis. In contrast, the HS-small strain stability model has a wide range of applications for each ground. And it is known that soil deformation characteristics can be analyzed according to field conditions by enabling input of initial elastic modulus and nonlinear curve parameter and so on. However, civil engineers are having difficulty using nonlinear models that can apply material nonlinear properties due to difficulties in estimating ground property coefficients. In this study, the necessity of rational model selection was reviewed by comparing the results of seismic performance evaluation using the Mohr-Coulomb model, which civil engineers generally apply for numerical analysis of tunnels, and the HS Small strain Stiffness model, which can consider ground nonlinearity.

Because of the global pollution caused by plastic disposal, demand for eco-friendly transformation in the packaging industry is increased. As part of that, the utilization of polylactic acid (PLA) as a food packaging material is increased. However, it is necessary to improve the crystallinity of PLA by adding nucleating agents or to improve the modulus by adding fillers because of the excessive brittleness of the PLA matrix. Thus, the cellulose nanofiber (CNF) was fabricated and dried to obtain a powder form and applied to the CNF/PLA nanocomposite. The effect of CNF on the morphological, thermal, rheological, and dynamic mechanical properties of the composite was analyzed. We can confirm the impregnated CNF particle in the PLA matrix through the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed that the crystallinity of not annealed CNF/PLA nanocomposite was increased approximately 2 and 4 times in the 1st and 2nd cycle, respectively, with the shift to lower temperature of cold crystallization temperature (Tcc) in the 2nd cycle. Moreover, the crystallinity of annealed CNF/PLA nanocomposite increased by 13.4%, and shifted Tcc was confirmed.
