Interaction of industrial effluents and bentonite: a comparative study of their physico-chemical and geotechnical characteristics

  • One-dimensional soil-column studies were carried out to understand the interaction of three industrial effluents namely amino acid ('highly acidic'), surfactant ('highly organic') and pharmaceutical ('organic and toxic') on the physicochemical behavior, index properties and shear strength of bentonite due to artificial contamination extending to nearly 300 days. Changes in inorganic and organic pollutants present in the effluents due to the interaction of the above effluents and soil were assessed to understand the physico-chemical behaviour. Batch and continuous modes of operation, 8 hrs and 16 hrs Hydraulic Retention Time [HRT] and 25%, 50% concentrations of effluents, were the parameters considered. Amino acid, surfactant and pharmaceutical effluents have shown a high variation in pH (7 to 8) after artificial contamination on bentonite that is their original characteristics of the above effluents have been completely reversed. Further, it is found that the shear strength of bentonite has reduced by about 20%, and with respect to liquid limit and plastic limit shows an increasing trend with time within the period of contamination.

Probabilistic models for curvature ductility and moment redistribution of RC beams

  • It is generally accepted that, in the interest of safety, it is essential to provide a minimum level of flexural ductility, which will allow energy dissipation and moment redistribution as required. If one wishes to be uniformly conservative across all of the design variables, curvature ductility and moment redistribution factor should be calculated using a probabilistic method, as is the case for other design parameters in reinforced concrete mechanics. In this study, simple expressions are derived for the evaluation of curvature ductility and moment redistribution factor, based on the concept of demand and capacity rotation. Probabilistic models are then derived for both the curvature ductility and the moment redistribution factor, by means of central limit theorem and through taking advantage of the specific behaviour of moment redistribution factor as a function of curvature ductility and plastic hinge length. The Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method is used to check and verify the results of the proposed method. Although some minor simplifications are made in the proposed method, there is a very good agreement between the MCS and the proposed method. The proposed method could be used in any future probabilistic evaluation of curvature ductility and moment redistribution factors.

  • One of the major factors affecting the life span of a Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) is the Pressurised Thermal Shock (PTS). PTS is a thermo-mechanical load on the RPV wall due to steep temperature gradients and structural load created by internal pressure of the fluid within the RPV. Safe operating life of a nuclear power plant is ensured by carrying out fracture analysis of the RPV against thermal shock. Carrying out fracture tests on RPV/large scale components is not always feasible. Hence, studies on laboratory level specimens are necessary to validate and supplement the prototype results. This paper aims to study the fracture behaviour of standard Compact Tension [C(T)] specimens, made of RPV steel 20MnMoNi55, subjected to thermal shock through experimental and numerical investigations. Fracture tests have been carried out on the C(T) specimens subjected to thermal transient load and tensile load to quantify the effect of thermal shock. Crack resistance curves are obtained from the fracture tests as per ASTM E1820 and compared with those obtained numerically using XFEM and a good agreement was found. A quantitative study on the crack tip plastic zone, computed using cohesive segment approach, from the numerical analyses justified the experimental crack initiation toughness.

Local buckling of reinforcing steel bars in RC members under compression forces

  • Buckling of longitudinal bars is a brittle failure mechanism, often recorded in reinforced concrete (RC) structures after an earthquake. Studies in the literature highlights that it often occurs when steel is in the post elastic range, by inducing a modification of the engineered stress-strain law of steel in compression. A proper evaluation of this effect is of fundamental importance for correctly evaluating capacity and ductility of structures. Significant errors can be obtained in terms of ultimate bending moment and curvature ductility of an RC section if these effects are not accounted, as well as incorrect evaluations are achieved by non-linear static analyses. This paper presents a numerical investigation aiming to evaluate the engineered stress-strain law of reinforcing steel in compression, including second order effects. Non-linear FE analyses are performed under the assumption of local buckling. A role of key parameters is evaluated, making difference between steel with strain hardening or with perfectly plastic behaviour. Comparisons with experimental data available in the literature confirm the accuracy of the achieved results and make it possible to formulate recommendations for design purposes. Finally, comparisons are made with analytical formulations available in the literature and based on obtained results, a modification of the stress-strain law model of Dhakal and Maekawa (2002) is proposed for fitting the numerical predictions.

Composite components damage tracking and dynamic structural behaviour with AI algorithm

  • This study discusses a hypothetical method for tracking the propagation damage of Carbon Reinforced Fiber Plastic (CRFP) components underneath vibration fatigue. The High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) behavior of composite materials was generally not as severe as this of admixture alloys. Each fissure initiation in metal alloys may quickly lead to the opposite. The HCF behavior of composite materials is usually an extended state of continuous degradation between resin and fibers. The increase is that any layer-to-layer contact conditions during delamination opening will cause a dynamic complex response, which may be non-linear and dependent on temperature. Usually resulted from major deformations, it could be properly surveyed by a non-contact investigation system. Here, this article discusses the scanning laser application of that vibrometer to track the propagation damage of CRFP components underneath fatigue vibration loading. Thus, the study purpose is to demonstrate that the investigation method can implement systematically a series of hypothetical means and dynamic characteristics. The application of the relaxation method based on numerical simulation in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Evolved Bat (EB) strategy to reduce the dynamic response is proved by numerical simulation. Thermal imaging cameras are also measurement parts of the chain and provide information in qualitative about the temperature location of the evolution and hot spots of damage.

A numerical framework of the phenomenological plasticity and fracture model for structural steels under monotonic loading

  • In this study, the classical J2 flow theory is explicitly proved to be inappropriate to describe the plastic behaviour of structural steels under different stress states according to the reported test results. A numerical framework of the characterization of the strain hardening and ductile fracture initiation involving the effect of stress states, i.e., stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter, is proposed based on the mechanical response of structural steels under monotonic loading. Both effects on strain hardening are determined by correction functions, which are implemented as different modules in the numerical framework. Thus, other users can easily modify them according to their test results. Besides, the ductile fracture initiation is determined by a fracture locus in the space of stress triaxiality, Lode angle parameter, and fracture strain. The numerical implementation of the proposed model and the corresponding code are provided in this paper, which are also available on GitHub. The validity of the numerical procedure is examined through single element tests and the accuracy of the proposed model is verified by existing test results.

현장시험과 Class-A 및 C1 type 수치해석을 통한 강관매입말뚝의 거동에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Behaviour of Prebored and Precast Steel Pipe Piles from Full-Scale Field Tests and Class-A and C1 Type Numerical Analyses)

  • 본 연구에서는 강관매입말뚝의 하중-침하 및 전단응력 전이 특성을 분석하기 위하여 시험시공 및 수치해석을 수행하였다. 동재하시험 및 정재하시험을 수행한 결과 EOID 및 Restrike 시험을 통해 평가된 말뚝의 설계지지력은 정재하시험에서 평가된 설계 지지력에 비해 각각 약 56~105% 및 65~121%의 범위를 보였으며, 말뚝재하시험 이전에 수행된 Class-A type 수치해석의 경우 38~142%의 범위를 보였다. 또한 Restrike 시험에서 평가된 설계지지력은 EOID 시험의 설계지지력에 비해 12~60% 증가된 것으로 평가되었다. EOID에서는 선단지지력이 크게 측정되는 데 비해, Restrike 시험에서는 주면마찰력이 크게 측정되었는데 Restrike 시험의 타격에너지가 충분하지 않은 경우 말뚝의 선단지지력이 과소평가될 가능성이 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구의 분석에 의하면 동재하시험을 통해 말뚝의 지지력을 합리적으로 평가하기 위해서는 주면지지력은 Restrike 시험 결과를, 선단지지력은 EOID 시험 결과를 적용하는 것이 합리적인 것을 알 수 있었다. 정재하시험 실측값과 수치해석으로부터 예측된 하중-침하 관계는 탄성범위까지는 어느 정도 유사하지만 항복이 발생한 이후의 거동은 크게 벗어났다. 즉 실측값은 항복 이후 경화현상이 거의 없이 마치 탄성-완전소성(elastic-perfectly plastic) 재료와 유사하게 파괴에 도달되는 반면에, 수치해석에서는 변형경화(strain hardening)과정을 거치면서 파괴에 점진적으로 도달되는 경향을 보였다. 말뚝의 하중-침하 특성은 지반의 강성에 영향을 받으며, 축력분포는 지반의 전단 강도상수에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다.

고급알코올과 고급지방산이 O/W에멀젼의 유동특성에 미치는 영향 (The Influences of Fatty Alcohol and Fatty Acid on Rheological Properties of O/W Emulsion)

  • Oil in water (O/W)에멀젼에서 에멀젼 안정화제로 사용되는 고급알코올과 고급지방산이 O/W에멀젼의 유동특성에 미치는 영향을 점도와 rheograms으로 분석하였다. 고급알코올과 고급지방산의 탄소 체인 길이가 증가할수록 O/W에멀젼의 점도가 상승하는 경향을 나타내었으며 고급알코올의 점도 상승 효과가 고급지방산보다 우수하였다. 또한 에멀젼 제조에 사용된 계면활성제의 친유부의 탄소 체인 길이에 유사한 스테아릴알코올과 세테아릴알코올의 점도 상승 효과가 가장 우수하였다. 고급알코올과 고급지방산이 첨가된 O/W에멀젼은 화장품 에멀젼이 보여주는 유동특성인 shear thinning을 나타내는 pseudo-plastic유체였다. 세틸알코올, 세테아릴알코올과 스테아릴알코올이 첨가된 O/W에멀젼은 thixotropy이었으며 농도가 증가할수록 thixotropic 현상이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 또한 고급지방산보다는 고급알코올이 첨가된 O/W에멀젼이 더 thixotropic한 유동특성을 나타내었다. O/W에멀젼의 안정성과 관련된 점도상승과 사용감과 관련된 spreadability 향상을 위해 에멀젼 안정화제로 고급지방산보다는 고급알코올의 사용이 적합하리라 생각된다.

실내모형시험을 통한 얕은 기초 하부에서 터널굴착 시 지하수위 위치에 따른 지반거동 (Ground behaviour according to ground water locations due to tunnelling below shallow foundation by laboratory model test)

  • 최근 도심지 지상 구조물의 포화와 함께 극심한 교통난에 대한 해결책으로 터널과 같은 지하공간 개발의 중요성이 커지고 있다. 이러한 이유로 현재 국내의 많은 지역에서 터널 시공이 이루어지고 있으며, 다양한 터널 확충 정책이 건설계의 화두가 되고 있다. 하지만, 터널굴착에 의한 지반거동을 사전에 분석하는 것은 다양한 조건을 해석하고 고려해야 하므로 매우 어려운 일이다. 기존의 구조물 하부 터널굴착에 대한 연구는 많은 연구자에 의해 수행되었지만, 대부분의 연구에서는 지하수위의 영향을 거의 고려하지 못하였다. 지하수위에 따라 발생되는 간극수압은 지반의 전단강도에 지대한 영향을 미치므로, 지하수 고려 여부에 따라 지반의 거동은 크게 달라질 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제점을 고려하지 못한 기존 연구의 한계에서 나아가, 얕은 기초 아래 터널굴착 시 지하수위 위치가 지반거동에 미치는 영향을 효과적으로 분석하고자 한다. 이에 따라 지하수위를 고려할 수 있는 새로운 시험 장치를 개발하였으며, 실내모형시험과 함께 근거리 사진계측을 사용하여 분석을 실시하였다. 또한, 수치해석을 통해 소성해석과 연계해석을 수행하여 실내모형시험 결과와 비교하였다. 두 가지의 수치해석 방법과 실내모형시험 결과를 비교하여 실제 도심지 터널 굴착 모델에 적합한 모델을 제시하고자 한다.
