Effect of Organic Selenium (Sel-Plex) on Thermometabolism, Blood Chemical Composition and Weight Gain in Holstein Suckling Calves

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effects of milk supplemented with Sel-Plex on thyroid hormones, rectal temperature, plasma glucose and cholesterol concentrations, and body weight in suckling calves. Ten Holstein suckling male calves of approximately 1 month of age were selected and randomly allocated to one of two groups and fed either unsupplemented milk (control) or milk supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg DM Se from Sel-Plex (treated). The animals received treated milk and free choice starter for two months. Dry matter intake for each individual animal was recorded daily throughout the study. The calves were weighed and blood samples were taken weekly. Plasma concentrations of triiodothyronine ($T_{3}$), thyroxin ($T_{4}$) and $T_{3}$-Uptake were determined using radioimmunoassay kits. Plasma cholesterol and glucose concentrations were determined by enzymatic-colorimetric methods. Rectal temperature was recorded at blood sampling time. During the experiment, ambient temperature and relative humidity were recorded at the time of blood sampling and every four hours. Treatment significantly (p<0.01) affected the concentration of $T_{3}$, free $T_{3}$ index ($FT_{3}I$) and ratio of $T_{3}$:$T_{4}$ in plasma. The plasma concentrations of $T_{3}$ in treated calves were 33% higher than in the control. The plasma concentrations of $T_{4}$ (p<0.05), glucose (p<0.01) and cholesterol (p<0.01) were decreased in the treated group. Calves fed Sel-Plex had higher rectal temperature (p<0.01). Plasma free $T_{4}$ index (FT4I) did not differ significantly between the two groups. An increase in body weight was observed (p<0.09) in the treated group. The results indicated that milk fortified with Sel-Plex could increase tissue conversion of $T_{4}$ to $T_{3}$ and therefore improve thermometabolism in suckling calves.

상압 플라즈마 표면처리에 의한 고분자 재질의 접착특성 변화 (Adhesion Characteristics of Polymer Material Treated by Atmospheric Pressure Plasma)

  • 본 연구에서는 상압 플라즈마를 발생시켜 고분자 재료의 표면 자유에너지와 접착력의 변화를 조사하였다. 고분자 재질은 PC, PET, EVA 를 사용하였으며 표면자유에너지 변화를 관찰하기 위해 Di water 와 diiodomethane을 사용하여 접촉각을 측정하였다. 플라즈마 처리에 따른 접착력의 변화를 관찰하기 위해 PET 필름에 고분자 필름을 부착시켜 $180^{\circ}$ peel test 를 수행하였다. 그 결과 PET 필름의 표면자유에너지 및 접착력이 가장 큰 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 상압 플라즈마 표면처리 공정은 필름 계면의 접착력을 크게 증가시켜 주는 것을 확인하였다.

Evaluation of Optimum Dietary Threonine Requirement by Plasma Free Threonine and Ammonia Concentrations in Surgically Modified Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the dietary threonine requirement by measuring the plasma free threonine and ammonia concentrations in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss after dorsal aorta cannulation. A total of 70 fish (average initial weight $506{\pm}8.2g$) were randomly distributed into each of the 14 net cages (5 fish/cage). After 48 hours (h) of feed deprivation, each group was intubated at 1% body weight with one of the seven L-amino acid based diets containing graded levels of threonine (0.42%, 0.72%, 0.92%, 1.12%, 1.32%, 1.52%, or 1.82% of diet, dry matter basis). Blood samples were taken at 0, 5, and 24 h after intubation. Post-prandial plasma free threonine concentrations (PPthr) of fish 5 h after intubation with diets containing 1.32% or more threonine were significantly higher than those of fish intubated with diets containing 1.12% or less threonine (p<0.05). Post-absorptive free threonine concentrations (PAthr) after 24 h of intubation of the fish with diets containing 0.92% or more threonine were significantly higher than those of fish intubated with diets containing 0.72% or less threonine. Post-prandial plasma ammonia concentrations (PPA, 5 h after intubation) were not significantly different among fish intubated with diets containing 1.12% or less threonine, except the PPA of fish intubated with diet containing 0.42% threonine. Broken-line model analyses of PPthr, PAthr, and PPA indicated that the dietary threonine requirement of rainbow trout should be between 0.95% (2.71) and 1.07% (3.06) of diet (% of dietary protein on a dry matter basis).

나프록센의 비선형 체내동태에 미치는 페노바르비탈의 영향 (Effect of Phenobarbital on the Nonlinear Pharmacokinetics of Naproxen)

  • In order to elucidate the effect of phenobarbital (PB) on the nonlinear pharmacokinetic behavior of naproxen (NAP), we compared the dose dependent hepatic intrinsic clearance, biliary excretion and protein binding of NAP in control rats to those in the PB-pretreated rats which were intraperitoneally pretreated with PB sodium (75 mg/kg) once a day for four days. NAP was injected via femoral (1.5 mg/kg) and portal(0.25, 0.5, 1.5, 15 and 30 mg/kg) vein to the control and PB-pretreated rats, respectively. And also, we measured the plasma free fraction of NAP with the equilibrium dialysis method and the biliary excreted total amounts of NAP in both rats. Plasma free fraction of NAP was decreased in lower concentration than $150\;{\mu}g/ml$ of NAP due to PB pretreatment. In higher concentration, however, plasma free fraction was increased. These in vitro results suggest that the total protein concentration was increased but the total binding capacity of NAP to protein was decreased by PB-pretreatment. The total plasma clearance and the hepatic intrinsic clearance of NAP had similar values in both groups, respectively. And, both clearances of NAP were significantly increased by PB-pretreatment. Even though the plasma free fractions of NAP in both groups were constantly remained within the concentration range according to the increase of administration dose, the hepatic intrinsic clearances of NAP were significantly increased in both groups with the increased dose. And, the biliary excreted total amounts of NAP were significantly increased by PB-pretreatment at the lower dose, but decreased at the higher dose. These in vivo results suggest that NAP represents the uncommon nonlinear pharmacokinetic behavior that the hepatic intrinsic clearance was enhanced with the increased dose, and that PB enhances further the hepatic intrinsic clearance of NAP with the increased dose due to its enzyme induction effect.

  • In this paper, parameters of electron temperature and density for the mercury-free lighting-source were measured to diagnosis and analyze in Xe based inductively coupled plasma (ICP). As results at several dependences of 20~100mTorr Xenon pressure, the brightness of discharge tube was higher (4,900 $cd/m^2$) than other conditions when Xe pressure was 20mTorr and RF power was 200W. In that case, the electron temperature and density were 3.58eV and $3.56{\times}10^{12}cm^2$, respectively. The key parameters of Xe based ICP depended on Xe pressure more than RF power that could be verified. A high electron temperature and low electron density with a suitable Xe pressure are indispensible parameters for Xe based ICP lighting-source.

Al2O3 Free 다성분계 유리의 CF4/O2/Ar 내플라즈마 특성 (CF4/O2/Ar Plasma Resistance of Al2O3 Free Multi-components Glasses)

  • The plasma resistance of multi-component glasses containing La, Gd, Ti, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, and Ta was analyzed in this study. The plasma etching was performed via inductively coupled plasma-reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE) using CF4/O2/Ar mixed gas. After the reaction, the glass with a low fluoride sublimation temperature and high content of P, Si, and Ti elements showed a high etching rate. On the other hand, the glass containing a high fluoride sublimation temperature component such as Ca, La, Gd, Y, and Zr exhibited high plasma resistance because the etch rate was lower than that of sapphire. Glass with low plasma resistance increased surface roughness after etching or nanoholes were formed on the surface, but glass with high plasma resistance showed little change in surface microstructure. Thus, the results of this study demonstrate the potential for the development of plasma-resistant glasses (PRGs) with other compositions besides alumino-silicate glasses, which are conventionally referred to as plasma-resistant glasses.

Confirmation of Male Specific Fetal Free RNA in Maternal Plasma and Comparison of Accuracy on the Sex Determination using Real-time PCR Method in Korean Native Cattle

  • Cell-free fetal RNA has been highlighted as useful tools for the fetal sex determination or other genetic inherent disorder. However, there is no knowledge about the sex determination using cell free fetal RNA in bovine field. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the presence of transcripts of DDX3Y, USP9Y and ZRSR2Y genes in maternal plasma of pregnant cows to determine the sex of the fetus using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay, and verify its accuracy, sensitivity and specificity compared with the molecular testing and the calf sex at birth. Transcripts of USP9Y and DDX3Y genes were expressed in the all plasma of males and females both the control group and the experimental group. However, ZRSR2Y gene was matched up with the molecular testing and the true sex in control group and has an overall accuracy of 82.6%, a sensitivity of 75%, and a specificity of 100% in experimental group. Therefore, these results indicated that real time PCR technique, as a noninvasive and cost-efficient method, is possible to determination fetal sex in the bovine species using circulating cell free RNA in maternal plasma and especially ZRSR2Y gene could be a good candidate for the RNA based sex determination work.

Li0.5La0.5TiO3와 Si박막을 갖는 구리 집전체의 Li free 음극으로써의 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical Properties of Cu Current Collector with Li0.5La0.5TiO3 or Si Thin Film as a Li Free Anode)

  • Li free 음극으로써 구리 foil 집전체에 $Li_{0.5}La_{0.5}TiO_3$ 및 Si 박막을 r.f, 스퍼터링법을 이용하여 증착하고 양극 물질로는 $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$를 이용하여 전기화학적 특성을 평가하였다. 박막 증착시 플라즈마 내(in-plasma)와 밖(out of plasma)에 구리 foil을 각각 위치시켰다. X-ray 회절 분석의 경우 각각의 조건에서 $Li_{0.5}La_{0.5}TiO_3$ 및 Si 모두 결정 특성의 차이를 발견할 수 없었다. $Li_{0.5}La_{0.5}TiO_3$의 경우 플라즈마 내에서 증착된 경우 그리고 Si 경우는 플라즈마 밖에서 증착된 경우 각각 싸이클 특성이 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 이는 $Li_{0.5}La_{0.5}TiO_3$ 경우 결정성이 존재할 경우 이온전도 특성이 우수하며 Si 경우 플라즈마 내에서 성장된 박막이 더욱 치밀하여 충방전 중 부피변화에 더욱 민감하였기 때문으로 판단된다. 이상의 결과로부터 (1)전지 용량을 갖는 5게 의한 표면 개질의 경우 구조적으로 안정할 수 있는 비정질 상의 Si이 보다 더 바람직하며 (2) 이온전도 특성을 보이는 $Li_{0.5}La_{0.5}TiO_3$와 같은 소재를 이용하여 표면 개질을 할 경우 Li의 확산이 더욱 용이한 구조가 바람직할 것으로 판단된다.

An overview of current knowledge about cell-free RNA in amniotic fluid

  • Cell-free nucleic acids (cf-NAs) originate in trophoblasts and are detected in the maternal plasma. Using innovative bioinformatic technologies such as next-generation sequencing, cf-NAs in the maternal plasma have been rapidly applied in prenatal genetic screening for fetal aneuploidy. Amniotic fluid is a complex and dynamic fluid that provides growth factors and protection to the fetus. In 2001, the presence of cf-NA in amniotic fluid was reported. Amniotic fluid is in direct contact with the fetus and is derived from fetal urine and maternal and fetal plasma. Therefore, these genetic materials have been suggested to reflect fetal health and provide real-time genetic information regarding fetal development. Recently, several studies evaluated the global gene expression changes of amniotic fluid cell-free RNA according to gestational age. In addition, by analyzing the transcriptome in the amniotic fluid of fetal aneuploidy, potential key pathways and novel biomarkers for fetal chromosomal aneuploidy were identified. Here, we review the current knowledge of cell-free RNA in amniotic fluid and suggest future research directions.

상압 플라즈마 표면처리를 통한 태양광모듈 커버글라스와 불소계 코팅의 응착력 향상 (Improved Adhesion of Solar Cell Cover Glass with Surface-Flourinated Coating Using Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment)

  • We propose a method for improving the reliability of a solar cell by applying a fluorinated surface coating to protect the cell from the outdoor environment using an atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) treatment. An APP source is operated by radio frequency (RF) power, Ar gas, and $O_2gas$. APP treatment can remove organic contaminants from the surface and improve other surface properties such as the surface free energy. We determined the optimal APP parameters to maximize the surface free energy by using the dyne pen test. Then we used the scratch test in order to confirm the correlation between the APP parameters and the surface properties by measuring the surface free energy and adhesive characteristics of the coating. Consequently, an increase in the surface free energy of the cover glass caused an improvement in the adhesion between the coating layer and the cover glass. After treatment, adhesion between the coating and cover glass was improved by 35%.
