  • The effect of thermal cycling on bond strength and residual stress at the interface between benzocyclobutene (BCB) and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposited (PECVD) silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) coated silicon wafers were evaluated by four point bending and wafer curvature techniques. Wafers were bonded using a pre-established baseline process. Thermal cycling was done between room temperature and a maximum peak temperature. In thermal cycling performed with 350 and $400^{\circ}C$ peak temperature, the bond strength increased substantially during the first thermal cycle. The increase in bond strength is attributed to the relaxation in residual stress by the condensation reaction of the PECVD $SiO_2$: this relaxation leads to increases in deformation energy due to residual stress and bond strength.

  • We have been setting up experiments on propagation of shock waves generated by the pulsed laser ablation. One side of a thin metal foil is subjected to laser ablation as a shock wave is generated from a localized spot of high intensity energy source. The resulting reactive shock wave, which penetrates through the foil is reflected by an acoustic impedance which causes the metal foil to high-strain rate deform. This short time physics is captured on an ICCD camera. The focus of our research is generating reactive shock wave and high strain rate deforming of thin metal foil for accelerating micro-particles to a very high speed on the orders of several thousand meter per second. Somce innovative applications of this device will be discussed.

  • Down syndrome screening with cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in the maternal plasma has recently received much attention in the prenatal diagnostic field. Indeed, a large amount of evidence has already accumulated to show that screening tests with cfDNA are more sensitive and specific than conventional maternal serum and/or ultrasound screening. Globally, more than 1,000,000 of these noninvasive prenatal tests (NIPTs) have been performed to date. There are several different methods for NIPTs that are currently commercially available, including shotgun massively parallel sequencing, targeted massively parallel sequencing, and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based methods. All of these methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. In this review, I will focus specifically on the SNP-based NIPT.

  • A laser shock cleaning technology is a new dry cleaning methodology for the effective removal of small particles from the surface. This technique uses a plasma shock wave produced by a breakdown of air due to an intense laser pulse. In order to optimize the laser shock cleaning process, it needs to evaluate the cleaning performance quantitatively by using a monitoring technique. In this paper, an acoustic monitoring technique was attempted to investigate the laser shock cleaning process with an aim to optimize the cleaning process. A wide-band microphone with high sensitivity was utilized to detect acoustic signals during the cleaning process. It was found that the intensity of the shock wave was strongly dependent on the power density of laser beam and the gas species at the laser beam focus. As a power density was larger, the shock wave became stronger. It was also seen that the shock wave became stronger in the case of Ar gas compared with air and N$_2$ gas.

  • As the clinical practice of using more than one drug at a time increase, the clinician is faced with ever-increasing number of potential drug interactions. Although many interactions have little clinical significances, some may interfere with treatment or even be life-threatening. This review provides a better understanding of drug-drug interactions often encountered in pharmacotherapy of depression. Drug interactions can be grouped into two principal subdivisions : pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic. These subgroups serve to focus attention on possible sites of interaction as a drug moves from the site of administration and absorption to its site of action. Pharmacokinetic processes are those that include transport to and from the receptor site and consist of absorption, distribution on body tissue, plasma protein binding, metabolism, and excretion. Pharmacodynamic interactions occur at biologically active sites. In this review, emphasis is placed on antidepressant medications, how they are metabolized by the P450 system, and how they alter the metabolism of other drugs. When prescribing antidepressant medications, the clinician must consider the drug-drug interactions that are potentially problematic.

  • Cutting and planarization of diamond films have been performed using copper vapor laser under air at-mosphere. Diamond films of about 350${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 800 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thick have been synthesized with DC plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition. The position of a specimen has been controlled by computer-driven stage. With copper vapor laser beam of 7W cutting depth increases rapidly and saturates with increasing scan number and decreasing scan speed. 8 repetitive scans at scan speed 0.5 mm/sec produce the maximum cutting depth without focus shifting Rod-shape copper vapor laser beam can be made and used effectively in planar-ization of rough diamond surface.

  • The HCP(Hypocycloidal Pinch) device for plasma focus was modified for a pumping source of the dye laser, and the spectral distribution and time behavior of its light pulses were investigated by using a UV spectrometer, 70 MHz CRO and Si-PIN photodiode detector. An array of multiple stages of HCP and narrower electrode gaps were chosen in order to make a more uniform discharge along the HCP axis. The possible spectral range for the pumping of dye laser is 360-620nm, when the HCP is operated at 5-8kv of apllied voltage and 50-150Torr of Ar fill gas pressure. The rise-time and FWHM of light pulses from the HCP are 5us and 30-50us respectively when it is operated under the same conditions as above.

  • We investigate flow and magnetic structure of a solar prominence with a focus on how the magnetic field originally determined by subsurface dynamics gives rise to the structure. We perform a magnetohydrodynamic simulation that reproduces the self-consistent evolution of a flow and the magnetic field passing freely through the solar surface. By analyzing Lagrangian displacements of magnetized plasma elements, we demonstrate the flow structure that is naturally incorporated to the magnetic structure of the prominence formed via dynamic interaction between the flow and the magnetic field. Our results explain a diverging flow on a U-loop, a counterclockwise downdraft along a rotating field line, acceleration and deceleration of a downflow along an S-loop, and partial emergence of a W-loop, which may play key roles in determining structural properties of the prominence.

  • The use of fossil fuel and biogas production causes air pollution and climate change problems. Research endeavors continue to focus on converting methane and carbon dioxide, which are the major causes of climate change, into quality energy sources. In this study, a novel plasma-carbon converter was proposed to convert biogas into high quality gas, which is linked to photovoltaic and wind power and which poses a problem on generating electric power continuously. The characteristics of conversion and gas production were investigated to find a possibility for biogas conversion, involving parametric tests according to the change in the main influence variables, such as O2/C ratio, total gas feed rate, and CO2/CH4 ratio. A higher O2/C ratio gave higher conversions of methane and carbon dioxide. Total gas feed rate showed maximum conversion at a certain specified value. When CO2/CH4 feed ratio was decreased, both conversions increased. As a result, the production of solar fuel by plasma oxidation destruction-carbon material gasification conversion, which was newly suggested in this study, could be known as a possibly useful technology. When O2/C ratio was 0.8 and CO2/CH4 was 0.67 while the total gas supply was at 40 L min-1 (VHSV = 1.37), the maximum conversions of carbon dioxide and methane were achieved. The results gave the highest production for hydrogen and carbon dioxide which were high-quality fuel.
