  • This study aimed to address the limitations of traditional plasma nitriding methods by implementing a short-term plasma oxy-nitriding treatment on the surface of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel. This treatment involved the sequential formation of nitride and oxide layers, to enhance surface hardness and corrosion resistance, respectively. The process resulted in the formation of a 20 ㎛-thick nitride layer and a 3 ㎛-thick oxide layer on the steel surface. Initially, the hardness increased by 2.2 times after nitriding, followed by a subsequent decrease of approximately 31 % after oxidation. While the nitriding process reduced corrosion resistance, the subsequent oxidation process led to the formation of a passive oxide film, effectively resolving this issue. The pitting corrosion of the oxide passive film started at 82.6 mVssc, providing better corrosion resistance characteristics than the nitride layer. Consequently, the trade-off between surface hardness and corrosion resistance in plasma oxy-nitrided AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel is anticipated to be recognized as an innovative and comprehensive surface treatment process for biomedical components.

  • A low energy ion irradiation system based on the deuterium arc ion source with a high perveance of 1 µP for a single extraction aperture has been successfully developed for the investigation of ion irradiation on plasma-facing components including the first mirror of plasma optical diagnostics system. Under the optimum operating condition for mirror testing, the ion source has a beam energy of 200 eV and a current density of 3.7 mA/cm2. The ion source comprises a magnetic cusp-type plasma source, an extraction system, a target system with a Faraday cup, and a power supply control system to ensure stable long time operation. Operation parameters of plasma source such as pressure, filament current, and arc power with D2 discharge gas were optimized for beam extraction by measuring plasma parameters with a Langmuir probe. The diode electrode extraction system was designed by IGUN simulation to optimize for 1 µP perveance. It was successfully demonstrated that the ion beam current of ~4 mA can be extracted through the 10 mm aperture from the developed ion source. The target system with the Faraday cup is also developed to measure the beam current. With the assistance of the power control system, ion beams are extracted while maintaining a consistent arc power for more than 10 min of continuous operation.

  • Chemical components of bovine aqueous humor were analyzed. Significant levels of protein, urea nitrogen, creatinine, cholesterol, calcium and electrolytes including sodium, potassium and chloride were detected. The composition of bovine aqueous humor is similar to that of cerebrospinal fluids, rather than that of plasma. It was also found that there is no significant difference in most components between aqueous humor of Korean native cattle and that of Holstein-Friesian cattle.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of ginseng-cake on growth and biochemical components of rats. The content of crude protein in ginseng-cake was 17.2% as dry basis. Methionine, isoleuine and valine were limiting amino acids in order and arginine was 23.6% in total amino acids. Body weight gain, food efficiency ratio, organ weight and biochemical components in plasma were significantly lower in ginseng-cake based diet group than in control diet group and those of ginseng-cake diet group supplemented with methionine, isoleucine and valine were significantly increased than those of ginseng-cake based diet group, but 소id not reach to those of control diet group.

  • Scuffing and severe wear of the highly stressed sliding components have been very critical problems in the development of a rotary compressor. In order to improve durability and reliability of the compressor, plasma ion-nitriding was applied on the shaft and the vane surface. The effects of different treatment conditions on the mechanical and tribological properties of the ion-nitrided surfaces were investigated. Ion-nitrided surfaces showed better tribological performances than untreated surfaces. The best wear performance was observed when the shaft was nitrided in the condition of 450$\circ$C, 7 hours, $N_2:H_2=1:4$ gas mixture by forming a ductile nitrided layer which has $\gamma'$ phase microstructure. As nitrogen gas pressure increased, $\varepsilon$ phase layer was formed. This hard phase layer was observed to be more beneficial for the vane in reducing friction and wear.

  • Although acebutolol (ABT) is almost completely absorbed in the gastrointestinal (Gl) tract, oral bioavailability of the drug is low due to extensive first-pass metabolism in the Gl tract and liver. In the present study, bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of ABT was studied in bile duct-bypassed rabbits after oral administration. For ABT the time to reach the plasma peak (T$_{max}$) and mean resident time (MRT) were increased by the treatment. For diacetolol (DAT), a metabolite of ABT area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC), T$_{max}$ and plasma half-life were increased by the treatment. These results indicate that oral bioavailability of ABT is associated with the enterohepatic recycling of bile juice components.nts.

  • NOx, Soot and other exhausted components already became a dangerous state as principal materials of the air pollution. Therefore, the exhausted regulations are getting strict in the many countries. In this paper, reduction characteristic of NOx, Soot and CO from diesel engine are investigated, when MF plasma-EGR hybride system is put to the diesel engine. NOx is decreased in all measured load and applied voltage to plasma renter However Soot is increased as increasing EGR rate and it is decreased as increasing applied voltage.

  • Most lipids in milk are dispetsed as the form of fat globules. Apical portion of plasma membrane is coated with fat globules, which are synthesized from mammary epithelial cells and then secreted into the lumen. The unique phenomenon in separation of the plasma membrane from the cell is observed only in mammary system. It has been suggested that milk fat globule membrane(MFGM) is formed from endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, secretory granule to plasma membrane. For this reason MFGM is important for nuderstanding the structure and function of biological membrane. Because MFGM also plays an important role in inhibition of lipase action, stimulation of nutrient digestion and absorption, emulsion or function as natural liposome, study of the major components in MFGM will provide the opportunity for more broad industrial uses of MFGM in the future.

  • A new diagnosis model was constructed by combining atomic force microscopy (AFM), wavelet, and neural network. Plasma faults were characterized by filtering AFM-measured etch surface roughness with wavelet. The presented technique was evaluated with the data collected during the etching of silicon oxynitride thin film. A total of 17 etch experiments were conducted. Applying wavelet to AFM, surface roughness was detailed into vertical, horizon%at, and diagonal components. For each component, neural network recognition models were constructed and evaluated. Comparisons revealed that the vertical component-based model yielded about 30% improvement in the recognition accuracy over others. The presented technique was evaluated with the data collected during the etching of silicon oxynitride thin film. A total of 17 etch experiments were conducted

  • Bonding metal and textile components to rubber has always posed a problem. In this paper, an attempt had been made to modify textile and metal surfaces for bonding with rubber. The metal surfaces were modified using silane coupling agents and textile fibers were modified using plasma polymerization techniques. Some results on adhesion of metals to a range of sulfur-cured rubber compounds using a combination of organofunctional silanes are given here. The treatment was not only effective for high-sulfur compounds but also for low-sulfur com pounds as used in engine mounts and even for some semi-EV compounds. Coatings of plasmapolymerized pyrrole or acetylene were deposited on aramid and polyester tire cords. Standard pull-out force adhesion measurements were used to determine adhesion of tire cords to rubber compounds. The plasma coatings were characterized by various techniques and the performance results are explained in an interpenetrating network model.
