Plasmacytoma is a plasma cell neoplasm that locally infiltrates a bone or spreads to extramedullary areas. A new World Health Organization criterion defines solitary plasmacytoma of bone as a localized bone tumor consisting of plasma cells identical to those seen in plasma cell myeloma, which is manifested as a solitary osteolytic lesion in a radiological evaluation. Primary tumors of the sternum are generally malignant, and solitary plasmacytomas of the sternum are very rare tumors. We present herein the case of a patient who had a primary sternal tumor with solitary plasmacytoma and no evidence of multiple myeloma.
Breakdown voltage model and expertiments are compared for discharge cells of AC plasma display panel. In the model, discharge paths are assumed to be initial electric field lines and the one-dimensional continuity equation is applied to the charged particle transport at each field line. The comparisons are performed in the wide range of gas pressure (50-600torr), Xe partial pressure over total pressure (1-6%), sustain electrode gap(100-1000$\mu\textrm{m}$), wall height(130, 300$\mu\textrm{m}$), and voltage pulse width(2-6${\mu}$s). The presented breakdown voltage model well agree with experiments in the above wide range. The increase of breakdown voltage with the decrease of the width(L) of protruding electrode is also described by the model.
Most lipids in milk are dispetsed as the form of fat globules. Apical portion of plasma membrane is coated with fat globules, which are synthesized from mammary epithelial cells and then secreted into the lumen. The unique phenomenon in separation of the plasma membrane from the cell is observed only in mammary system. It has been suggested that milk fat globule membrane(MFGM) is formed from endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, secretory granule to plasma membrane. For this reason MFGM is important for nuderstanding the structure and function of biological membrane. Because MFGM also plays an important role in inhibition of lipase action, stimulation of nutrient digestion and absorption, emulsion or function as natural liposome, study of the major components in MFGM will provide the opportunity for more broad industrial uses of MFGM in the future.

The mechanism of striation in the coplanar- and matrix-type plasma display panel (PDP) cells has been studied using the particle-in-cell Monte-Carlo Collision (PIC-MCC) model. The striation formation is related to the ionization energy of neutral atoms and the well-like deformation of space potential by space charge distribution. Negative wall charge accumulation by electrons on the MgO surface of the anode region is also one of the key factors for the formation of striation. The clearness of the striation phenomenon in PIC-MCC code in comparison with fluid code can be explained by using nonlocal electron kinetic effect.
In a conventional plasma display, the bus electrode was located on the ITO electrode at the outer part of each cell. We propose a new electrode configuration using vertical auxiliary electrodes which play a role of electrically connecting ITO and bus electrodes with the aim of enhancing discharge and luminous characteristics of the PDP (Plasma Display Panel). In this paper, luminance and luminous efficiency of the 3 in.-diagonal test panel are measured with various number of vertical auxiliary electrodes such as 2, 50 and 150. The change in the luminous characteristics is explained in connection with the discharge characteristics of the PDP cells such as current peak, IR emission peak and ICCD picture image.
The exterior structures of natural organisms have continuously evolved by controlling wettability, such as the Namib Desert beetle, whose back has hydrophilic/hydrophobic contrast for water harvesting by mist condensation in dry desert environments, and some plant leaves that have hierarchical micro/nanostructures to collect or repel liquid water. In this work, we have provided a method for wettability contrast on metals by both nano-flake or needle patterns and tuning of the surface energy. Metals including steel alloys and aluminum were provided with hierarchical micro/nanostructures of metaloxides induced by fluorination and a subsequent catalytic reaction of fluorine ions on metal surfaces in water with various ranges from room to boiling temperature of water. Then, a hydrophobic material was deposited on the structured surfaces, rendering superhydrophobicity. Plasma oxidization induces the formation of superhydrophilic surfaces on selective regions surrounded by superhydrophobic surfaces. We show that wettability contrast surfaces align liquid water within patterned hydrophilic regions during the condensation process. Furthermore, this method could have a greater potential to align other liquids or living cells.
Using ray-optics code incorporated with three-dimensional PDP cell simulation, we have analysed the energy flow in the PDP cell from the electric power input to the visible light output. Also, the visible light output profile and viewing angle distribution were obtained. We applied our code to the analysis of the barrier rib height effect on the visible light luminance and efficiency of the sustaining discharge. Although cells with higher barrier rib generate more VUV photons, less ratio of visible photons are emitted toward front panel due to the shadow effect. Thus, there exists optimal barrier rib height giving the highest visible luminance and efficiency. This kind of code can be a powerful tool in designing cell geometry.
This study investigated the effect of red ginseng extract on metastasis of colon cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Wound healing migration, cell motility, invasion, and activity, protein expression, and mRNA expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) were examined in SW480 human colon cancer cells. SW480 cells were cultured with or without $100{\mu}g/L$ PMA in the absence or presence of various concentrations (100, 200, or $300{\mu}g/mL$) of red ginseng extract. Red ginseng extract treatment caused signifi cant suppression of cell motility and invasion (p<0.05) in SW480 cells. Red ginseng extract inhibited MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity and their protein and mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner (p<0.05) in SW480 cells. For experimental metastasis, BALB/c mice were injected intravenously with CT-26 mouse colon cancer cells in the tail vein, and were orally administered various concentrations (0, 75, 150, or 300 mg/kg body weight) of red ginseng extract for 3 weeks. Numbers of pulmonary nodules were signifi cantly decreased in mice that were fed red ginseng extract (p<0.05). Plasma MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity signifi cantly decreased in response to treatment with red ginseng extract in mice (p<0.05). These data suggest that red ginseng extract may be useful for prevention of cancer invasion and metastasis through inhibition of MMP-2 and MMP-9 pathways.
Cellular compatibility in the self-parasitism of Cuscuta australis R. Brown was studied at the ultrastructural level. The front cells of the haustorium penetrated the host stems independently grew within the host tissues and transformed into elongate, filamentous hyphae. Each hyphal cells contained a large nucleus and dense cytoplasm with abundant cell organelles. Multilamellar structures were contained in the cytoplasm and cell walls of the penetrating hyphal cells. When the hyphal cells did not yet invade the host cells, the middle lamella and the fused cellulosic cell walls of the two partners at the host-parasite interface were preserved well. As the invasion of the parasitic hyphal cells progressed, however, the middle lamella was not found at the interface and the host cell walls and plasma membranes were partially broken down. A hyphal cell penetrated deeply into the host cell had a more darkly stained cytoplasm with numerous of cell organelles. In the host cells attacked by the hyphal cells the limiting membranes of plastids were broken down and several vesicles were arrayed near the cell walls. No plasmodesmatal connections between the host and parasite cell walls were found; however, half-plasmodesmata were observed frequently on the side of the hyphal cell walls. These results suggested that the compatibility response in the self-parasitism of Cuscuta was expressed by cell walls, not by plasmodesmata, between the host and the parasite cells.
We fed high trypotophan diet(3.5% tryptophan/diet(w/w) to mice for 7 days and treated then with 3 hour immobilization(IMMB) stress to investigate tryptophan metabolism and immunomodulation. The levels of serum tryptophan, brain tryptophan, serotonin(5HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid(5HIAA) in the tryptophan diet fed animals were higher than those of the normal diet fed animals. Feeding tryptophan supplemented diet to stressed animal significantly decreased the levels of serum and brain tryptophan and 5HT levels. However, the amount of 5HIAA which is the metabolite of serotonin was increased in brain. Plasma corticosterone level was increased by the stress in both groups but the degree of this increase was smaller in high tryptophan fed animals. The relative numbers of CD8+ T cells, CD4+ T cells and B cells in spleen were decreased in high tryptophan diet fed and stressed animals compared to control diet fed and no stressed animals. CD8+ T cells decreased more than CD4+ T cells. The decrease of CD8+ T cells in high tryptophan fed and stressed animals was similar to that in high tryptophan fed animals or normal diet fed and stressed animals. Stress and tryptophan supplement acted synergistically to decrease the number of B cells. This study suggests that stress and tryptophan supplement could modify the number of lymphocyte cells, and indicates that the interaction of stress and tryptophan supplement on immune fuction depends on the types of immune cells.
