  • The aim of the study was to determine the antioxidant activities of the plants with origin of the Far East. The Carlemannia tetragona Hook f., which is a species of plant in the family Carlemanniaceae and Celastrus virens which is a species of plant in the family Celastraceae were tested for antioxidant activities. Samples were prepared using 95% ethanol using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate free radical) assay for assessing the antioxidant activity. Ascorbic acid was used for positive control for DPPH assay. DPPH assay experiment showed that extracts of the Carlemannia tetragona Hook. f., and Celastrus virens might have anti-oxidant activity 54.5% and 258% higher, respectively, compared to control. To determine the cell toxicity of these plant extracts, MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay was used. MTT assay experiment showed that Carlemannia tetragona Hook. f., and Celastrus virens might have less toxicity 23.3% and 27.5%, respectively, compared to control. Taken together, these experiments showed that Celastrus virens extracts might have much higher antioxidant activities than Carlemannia tetragona Hook. f., with relatively lower toxicity. This implies that this study might provide a basis to develop a new powerful antioxidant candidate for human diseases therapeutics.

  • A new discrete time gain-scheduled control design is proposed to improve disturbance attenuation for systems with bounded control input under known disturbance maximum norm. The state feedback gains are scheduled according to the proximity of the state of the plant to the origin. The controllers are derived in the framework of linear matrix inequality(LMI) optimization. This procedure yields a linear time varying control structure that allows higher gain and hence higher performance controllers as the state moves closer to the origin. The main results give sufficient conditions for the satisfaction of a parameter-dependent performance measure, without violating the bounded control input condition under the given disturbance maximum norm.

  • A new optimal state feedback and disturbance feedforward control design in the sense of minimizing $L_{2}-gain$ from disturbance to control output is proposed for disturbance attenuation of systems with bounded control input and measurable disturbance. The controller is derived in the framework of linear matrix inequality(LMI) optimization. A gain scheduled state feedback and disturbance feedforward control design is also suggested to improve disturbance attenuation performance. The control gains are scheduled according to the proximity to the origin of the state of the plant and the magnitude of disturbance. This procedure yields a stable linear time varying control structure that allows higher gain and hence higher performance controller as the state and the disturbance move closer to the origin. The main results give sufficient conditions for the satisfaction of a parameter-dependent performance measure, without violating the bounded control input condition.

  • Korean folk medicine 'Jil-Kyung-Ee' has been used to cure female disease, acute gastritis, edema, abdominal pain and pleurisy. The botanical origin of the crude drug has not been confirmed pharmocognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Jil-Kyung-Ee', the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves and roots of Plantago species growing in Korea, i.e. P. asiatica L., P. camtschatica Cham., P. depressa Willd., P. lanceolata L., P. major L. var. japonica (Fr. et Sav.) Miyabe were compared. As a result, it was determined that 'Jil-Kyung-Ee' was the whole plant body of Plantago asiatica and Plantago camtschatica.

  • Chinese crude drug "Lu-ti-cao"(鹿蹄草) has been used as a remedy for beriberi, cut bleeding, snake bite, etc. In Korea, the drug is called "Nok Je Cho" and has been used as a folk medicine of the same effect as that of Chinese equivalent. The original plant of this drug has not yet been as certained. To clarify the botanical origin of "Nok Je Cho", the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves of Pyrola species growing in Korea, i.e. P. incarnata, P. japonica, P. minor, P. renifolia, P. secunda were studied. As a result, it was clarified that "Nok Je Cho" was the leaf of Pyrola japonica and Pyrola minor.

  • In this study, the origin of the monovinyl chlorophyll a carboxylic biosynthetic route was investigated in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and com (Zea mays L.). Protoporphyrin IX accumulated in vivo or in vitro was found to be all of the divinyl form. Furthermore, the conversion of divinyl protoporphyrin IX to monovinyl protoporphyrin IX in vitro was not observed. In contrast, the biosynthesis and accumulation of monovinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX and its methyl ester occurred in etiolated leaves and divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX was convertible to monovinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX in vitro. These results suggest that the monovinyl chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ carboxylic biosynthetic route in plants may originate from the divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX pool.

  • Aconites distribute widely in northern hemispere of the earth reaching to arctic zone from warm and temperate one. Hitherto, these tuberous roots, 'Cho O', have been known to be famous plant poisons and essential important drugs possessing many remedial effects in each region of the world, especially in Korea and China. In Korea, although these plants grow widely in whole districts, their classifications are quite obscure. Especially, Aconitum triphyllum $N_{AKAI}$ is distributed whole districts. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Cho O', we studied on the anatomical characteristics of Aconitum triphyllum $N_{AKAI}$ growing wild in Korea. As a result, the environmental varieties of A. triphyllum $N_{AKAI}$ were recognized.

  • The Natural Gas and petroleum have the same Origin, Namely, Ocean bottom deposits of the marine plant, plankton which are subdued to the biological action of the bacterium under the anaerobic circumstance, and changed to the hydrocarbon gas and oils. and such resources are appeared in the aqueous sedimentary rocks in the tertiary. There are three types of gas field, which are oil well gas field, structural gas field and water soluble gas field.
