  • Since Rice bacterial grain rot (RGBR) was reported at 1986 in Korea, it has been severely occurred in 1994, 1995, 1998, and especially around 16,609 ha in 2000, and became a major disease in rice cultivation field. This study was focused on investigation of ecology of RGBR, weather conditions that affect development of epidemics, and development of an effective RGBR forecast system based on weather conditions during the rice heading period.(중략)

  • A total of 680 angiosperm plant species under 433 genera of 115 families have been recorded from the Southeast offshore Islands of Bangladesh including Nijhum Dwip, Hatiya, Sandwip, Kutubdia, Maheshkhali, Sonadia and Saint Martin's. Magnoliopsida is represented by 92 families, 344 genera and 546 species, whereas Liliopsida is represented by 23 families, 89 genera and 134 species. Habit analysis shows that herbs, shrubs, trees and climbers were represented by 331, 117, 169 and 63 species respectively. The plant diversity of the southeast offshore islands is under great risk because of many threats including natural and manmade. The aims of the present study are investigation, accumulation and documentation of the angiosperm plants of the area.

  • In this work a numerical study to find the characteristics of the internal flow and mixing process has been conducted in a static mixer used in the system of catalytic combustor of the fuel cell power plant. After introducing the model description and final governing equations the present numerical approach is applied to the analysis of static mixer, which may have one or more helical elements inside the circular tube by changing such various parameters as incoming mass flow rates and the number of helical elements. The results show that although the static mixer is efficient in mixing fuel and air, more optimization processes are required to achieve the appropriate mixing characteristics in front of the honeycomb type catalytic combustor used in the MCFC power plant

  • Recently, mixers are being widely used in the water purification plant in order to increase the filtration efficiency. The cause of an excessive vibration of a base structure to which the mixers are supported, has been evaluated through modal analysis on the mixer shaft and vibration measurements during operation. The fundamental natural frequency of the mixer shaft is found to be around 1.8 Hz and the main vibratory frequency around 30 Hz. (omitted)

  • This paper reports an example of flow-induced vibration in a very large plant and the whole procedure of reducing the vibration. During the operation of flue gas desurfurization unit of the thermal power plant, serious vibration occurred at all around the unit. The worst vibration was recorded on the heat exchanger surface, which weighed 180 tones, as 17.8 m/$s^2$ in vibration amplitude at 34Hz. To identify the vibration, frequency analysis on the response vibration, the expected excitation force and the system resonance was executed. This investigation revealed that the cause of the vibration was vortex shedding from the circular pipes in the heat exchanger. Vortices from the pipes excited acoustic resonance in the heat exchanger room, which, in turn, made the structure vibrate. Through inserting the baffles between the pipes, which had an effect of cutting the acoustic wave at resonance frequency, the vibration was eliminated dramatically.

  • Brassinosteroids are known to promote cell elongation in a wide range of plant species but their effect on cell division has not been extensively studied. The effect of brassinolide on the kinetics and final division frequencies of regenerating petal protoplasts of Petunia hybrida Vilm v. Comanche was examined. Under optimal auxin and cytokinin conditions, 10-100 nM brassinolide not only reduced the time of first cell division by 4.5 days but also altered the final division frequencies after 10 days of culture. One micromolar brassinolide showed the same acceleration of first cell division but inhibited the final division frequency by approximately 9%. Under sub-optimal auxin conditions, 10-100 nM brassinolide accelerated the first cell division, but no significant increase in the 8-10 days final division frequencies. Isolated protoplasts may provide a useful model system for the investigation of the molecular mechanisms of brassinosteroid action on cell division and proliferation in higher plants.

  • Screening of effective fungicides, determination of effective fungicide application time and investigation of the emergence of resistant isolates to fungicides were conducted to establish effective chemical control strategy of gray blight of tea (Camellia sinensis) in Korea. Systemic fungicides, such as bitertanol, were effective for controlling gray blight when the fungicides were sprayed within 3 days after cutting tea leaves for harvest. Sprayed immediately after cutting, contact fungicides such as chlorothalonil were also effective, but control efficacy rapidly decreased with lengthening of the intervals between cutting and spraying. Korean isolates of P. longiseta and P. theae were still sensitive to bitertanol or fluazinam. However, the isolates highly insensitive to copper hydroxide or thiophanate-methyl have already emerged in Korea. Therefore, careful attention should be paid to use of fungicides and spraying programs for the effective control of gray blight of tea in Korea.

  • The energy is the basis for almost all industrial activities and domestic needs. But recently there are increasing concerns internationally over environmental problems and consequent climate changes caused by the excessive use of fossil fuels. Furthermore the price of crude oil is increasing steadily with unstable supplies. In order to solve these national energy problems, the utilization of Ocean Energy is introduced as one of the best alterative technologies for the future. OTEC Power Plant has been installed at the West Inchon Power Plant Site. Temperature differences of$20~25^{\circ}C$ been utilized for plant operations, where R22 is used as a working fluid. The system is composed of low pressure turbine, plate type heat exchanger, and pumps. In the present investigation the experimental results, such as gross power, net power and objective function, are analysed when temperature differences change from the reference design point.
