The aim of this study is to examine the effects of shape and plane arrangement of submerged breakwaters on 3-D wave breaking characteristics over them. First, the numerical model, which is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar, and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed/Sandy beach interaction, and can determine the eddy viscosity with a LES turbulent model in a 3-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-3D), has been validated by a comparison with Goda's equation for breaking wave heights. And then, using the numerical results, the wave breaking points over the crest of submerged breakwaters have been examined in relation to the shape and plane arrangement of submerged breakwaters. Moreover, the wave height distribution and upper flow around submerged breakwaters have been also discussed, as well as the distribution of the wave breaking points over the beach.
An accurate and highly efficient inverse element labelled iPCB is developed based on the inverse finite element method (iFEM) for real-time shape estimation of plane-curved structures (such as arch bridges) utilizing onboard strain data. This inverse problem, named shape sensing, is vital for the design of smart structures and structural health monitoring (SHM) procedures. The iPCB formulation is defined based on a least-squares variational principle that employs curved Timoshenko beam theory as its baseline. The accurate strain-displacement relationship considering tension-bending coupling is used to establish theoretical and measured section strains. The displacement fields of the isoparametric element iPCB are interpolated utilizing nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) basis functions, enabling exact geometric modelling even with a very coarse mesh density. The present formulation is completely free from membrane and shear locking. Numerical validation examples for different curved structures subjected to different loading conditions have been performed and have demonstrated the excellent prediction capability of iPCBs. The present formulation has also been shown to be practical and robust since relatively accurate predictions can be obtained even omitting the shear deformation contributions and considering polluted strain measures. The current element offers a promising tool for real-time shape estimation of plane-curved structures.
In this paper, the stiffness and the mass matrices for the in-plane motion of a thin circular beam element are derived respectively from the strain energy and the kinetic energy by using the natural shape functions of the exact in-plane displacements which are obtained from an integration of the differential equations of a thin circular beam element in static equilibrium. The matrices are formulated in the local polar coordinate system and in the global Cartesian coordinate system with the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia. Some numerical examples are performed to verify the element formulation and its analysis capability. The comparison of the FEM results with the theoretical ones shows that the element can describe quite efficiently and accurately the in-plane motion of thin circular beams. The stiffness and the mass matrices with respect to the coefficient vector of shape functions are presented in appendix to be utilized directly in applications without any numerical integration for their formulation.

The course-keeping stability of a high speed planing boat should be considered at the design stage for its safe operations. The shape of waterjet intake plane is one of important design parameters of a waterjet propelled planing boat. That has significant influences on the stern flow patterns and pressure distributions. In this study, the effects of the waterjet intake shapes of planing boats on the course-keeping stabilities are investigated. Two kinds of designed planing boats have the same dimensions, but there are differences in waterjet intake plane shapes. Captive and free-running model tests, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses are carried out in order to estimate their hydrodynamic performances including course-keeping stabilities. The results show that the flat and wide waterjet intake plane of the initially designed boat makes the course-keeping stability worse. The waterjet intake shape is redesigned to improve the course-keeping stability. The improved performances are confirmed by free-running model tests and full-scale trials.
The crystals of group-Ⅲ nitride semiconductors with wurtzite structure exhibit a strong polarity. Especially, GaN has characteristics of different growth rate, anisotropic electrical and optical properties due to the polarity. In this work, GaN epilayer was grown and the polarities of the crystals were observed by the chemical wet etching and SP-EFM. GaN thin films were deposited on c-plane A1₂O₃ substrate under the variations of growth conditions by HVPE such as the deposition temperature of the buffer layer, the deposition time, the ratio of Group-V and Ⅲ and the deposition temperature of the film. The adquate results were obtained under the conditions of 500℃, 90 seconds, 1333 and 1080℃, respectively. It is observed that the GaN layer grown without the buffer layer has N-polarity and the GaN layer grown on the buffer layer has Ga-polarity. Fine crystal single particles were grown on c-plane A1₂O₃ and SiO₂, layer. The external shape of the crystal shows {10-11}{10-10}(000-1) planes as expected in the PBC theory and anisotropic behavior along c-axis is obvious. As a result of etching on each plane, (000-1) and {10-11}planes were etched strongly due to the N-polarity and {10-10} plane was not affected due to the non-polarity. In the case of the crystal grown on c-plane A1₂O₃, two types of crystals were grown. They were hexagonal pyramidal-shape with {10-11}plane and hexagonal prism with basal plane. The latter might be grown by twin plane reentrant edge (TPRE) growth.
The residual stress generated when the steel plates were produced, did not influence on the out-of-plane deformation and residual stress generated by welding. When the initial deflection shape was a concave(Type I), the out-of-plane deformation became the same shape as that of the initial deflection and its magnitude became small. When the initial deflection made a winding in the welding direction(Type III), the out-of-plane deformation became large in the plate width. The initial deflection shape did not influence on residual stress and plastic strain produced by welding.
To investigate the relationship between plane and side drape coefficient, the drape tester designed in which coordinate of projected outline of draped specimen could be recorded. By using this drape tester, the three dimensional shape, plane and side drape coefficient were obtained from coordinate of plane projected shape, and furthermore examined the tendency in changes of drape coefficient in terms of diameter of specimen, deflection angle, and bending rigidity. The side drape coefficients were constant regardless of changes in diameter of specimen. The plane drape coefficients, however, made a little difference according to changes in diameter of specimen. The experimental drape coefficient agreed well with the theoretical drape coefficient according to deflection angle. In the meanwhile, when the plane drape coefficients were regressed with the side drape coefficents, regression equation was $y=0.375x-0.002x^2+6.9\times10^{-5}x^3$. When the $\overline{\theta_s}$ is mean of deflection angle of selected points which have the longest and shortest distance from center point in the node, the theoretical drape coefficient calculated from $\overline{\theta_s}$ has high correlation with experimental drape coefficient. The plane and side drape coefficient changed linearly with increasing the bending length, $\sqrt[3]{EI/w}$.
