  • A novel multi-section power divider configuration is proposed to obtain wide-band frequency performance up to microwave frequency region. Design procedures for the proposed microwave broadband power divider are composed of a planar multi-section three-ports hybrid and a waveguide transformer design procedures. The multi-section power divider is based on design theory of the optimum quarter-wave transformer. Furthermore, in order to obtain the broadband isolation performance between the two adjacent output ports, the odd mode equivalent circuit should be matched by using the lossy element such as resistor. The derived design formula for calculating these odd mode matching elements is based on the singly terminated filter design theory. The waveguide transformer section is designed to suppress the propagation of the higher order modes such as waveguide modes due to employing the metallic electric wall. Simulation and experiment show excellent performance of multi section power divider.

  • When converters operate in megahertz range, the passive components and magnetic devices generate high losses. However, the eddy current issues and choices of magnetic cores significantly affect on the design stage. Apart from that, the components' reduction, miniaturization technique and frequency scaling are required as well as improvement in thermal capability, integration technique, circuit topologies and PCB layout optimization. In transformer design, the winding and core losses give great attention to the design stage. From simulation work, it is found that E-25066 material manufactured by AVX could be the most suitable core for high frequency transformer design. By employing planar geometry topology, the material can generate significant power loss savings of more than 67% compared to other materials studied in this work. Furthermore, young researchers can use this information to develop new approaches based on concepts, issues and methodology in the design of magnetic components for high frequency applications.

  • The objective of this paper is to effectively detect partial discharges in underground power cables. In this field, we have been usually applied several sensors for such partial discharges. This study used a type of beyond compare antenna based on the influence of background noises. Also, we designed a new structure that is able to easily apply in the adhesion of planar loop types for underground power cables in measurement sensitiveness elevation. A high frequency simulation tool (CST-MWS) was applied to the antenna used in this study, and it was used to evaluate certain characteristics. We fabricated an antenna using the simulation data obtained from a specific test. After checking the sensitivity of this Planar Loop Sensor in the Lab, it was tested in an actual site. This paper analyzed the data as a part of time and frequency domain using an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer, respectively.

Thus, each section of the designed waveguide transformer should be operated with evanescent mode over the whole design frequency band of the proposed microwave broadband power divider. This paper presents several simulations and experimental results of multi-section power divider to show validity of the proposed microwave broadband power divider configuration. Simulation and experiment show excellent performance of multi section power divider.

  • In this paper, compact linear dual polarized series-fed $1{\times}2$ linear and $2{\times}2$ planar arrays antennas for airborne SAR applications are proposed. The proposed antenna design consists of a square radiating patch that is placed on top of the substrate, a quarter wave transformer and $50-{\Omega}$ matched transformer. Matching between a radiating patch and the $50-{\Omega}$ microstrip line is accomplished through a direct coupled-feed technique with the help of an impedance inverter (${\lambda}/4$ impedance transformer) placed at both horizontal and vertical planes, in the case of the $2{\times}2$ planar array. The overall size for the prototype-1 and prototype-2 fabricated antennas are $1.9305{\times}0.9652{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$ and $1.9305{\times}1.9305{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$, respectively. The fabricated structure has been tested, and the experimental results are similar to the simulated ones. The CST MWS simulated and vector network analyzer measured reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) results were compared, and they indicate that the proposed antenna prototype-1 yields the impedance bandwidth >140 MHz (9.56-9.72 GHz) defined by $S_{11}$<-10 dB with 1.43%, and $S_{21}$<-25 dB in the case of prototype-2 (9.58-9.74 GHz, $S_{11}$< -10 dB) >140 MHz for all the individual ports. The surface currents and the E- and H-field distributions were studied for a better understanding of the polarization mechanism. The measured results of the proposed dual polarized antenna were in accordance with the simulated analysis and showed good performance of the S-parameters and radiation patterns (co-pol and cross-pol), gain, efficiency, front-to-back ratio, half-power beam width) at the resonant frequency. With these features and its compact size, the proposed antenna will be suitable for X-band airborne synthetic aperture radar applications.

  • This paper presents a new circuit topology of active edge resonant snubbers assisted half-bridge soft switching PWM inverter type DC-DC high power converter for DC bus feeding power plants. The proposed DC-DC power converter is composed of a typical voltage source-fed half-bridge high frequency PWM inverter with a high frequency planar transformer link in addition to input DC busline side power semiconductor switching devices for PWM control scheme and parallel capacitive lossless snubbers. The operating principle of the new DC-DC converter treated here is described by using switching mode equivalent circuits, together with its unique features. All the active power switches in the half-bridge arms and input DC buslines can achieve ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off commutation transitions. The total turn-off switching losses of the power switches can be significantly reduced. As a result, a high switching frequency IGBTs can be actually selected in the frequency range of 60 kHz under the principle of soft switching. The performance evaluations of the experimental setup are illustrated practically. The effectiveness of this new converter topology is proved for such low voltage and large current DC-DC power supplies as DC bus feeding from a practical point of view.

  • The Maxwell equation and the transformer equivalent-circuit model are applied to a radio frequency planar inductively coupled plasma. The spatial distribution of the vector potential, the magnetic field, and the electric field are obtained analytically. As a result, the plasma current, the mutual inductance between the coil and the plasma, and the self inductance of plasma are found to increase with increasing skin depth. The spatial distribution of absorbed power has maximum where the antenna coil exists, and has a similar profile to that of the induced electric field. The power transfer efficiency is found to increase with increasing gas pressure before a saturation around p+ 20mTorr, while it shows an increase with the plasma density before a slight decrease around a density of $5\times10^{11}/\textrm{cm}^3$.

  • This paper presents a semi-lumped balun transformer using conventional PCB process and its design theory and geometry for the maximally flat response and wide bandwidth using magnetically coupled LC resonators. The proposed balun is comprised of two pairs of coupled resonators which share one among three LC resonators. It provides an identical magnitude and phase difference of 180° between two balanced ports with DC isolation and an impedance transformation characteristic. Theoretical design and analysis were performed to optimize the inductance and capacitance values of proposed balun device for obtaining the wide bandwidth and maximally flat response in its pass-band. Three balun transformers with a center frequency of 500 MHz were demonstrated for proving the concept of design proposed. They were fabricated by using lumped chip capacitors and planar inductors embedded into a conventional 4-layered PCB substrate. They exhibited a maximum magnitude difference of 0.8 dB and phase difference within 2.4 degrees.
