The output power of turbine is greatly affected by the losses generated within the passage. In order to develop a better turbine or loss models, an experimental study was conducted using a linear cascade experimental apparatus. The total pressure loss and flow structures were measured at two cross-sectional planes located downstream of blade row. Measurement was conducted in a steady state for the several different locations of the blade row along the rotational direction. The blade row moved by 20 % of the pitch, and tip clearance was varied from 2% to 8%. Axial-type blades were used and its blade chord was 200mm. A square nozzle was applied and its size was $200mm{\times}200mm$. The experiment was conducted at a Reynolds number of $3{\times}10^5$ based on the chord. Nozzle flow angle sets to $65^{\circ}$ based on the axial direction and the solidity of blade row was 1.38. From the experimental results, the total pressure loss was greatly varied in the receding region than in the entering region. The flow properties within the blade passage were strongly changed according to the location of blade row.

An investigation of ribbed divergent channel was undertaken to determine the effect of rib pitch to height ratio on total friction factor and heat transfer results in the fully developed regime. The ribbed divergent rectangular channel with the channel exit hydraulic diameter ($D_{ho}$) to inlet channel hydraulic diameter ($D_{hi}$) ratio of 1.16 with wall inclination angle of 0.72 deg, at which the ratios (p/e) of 6,10, and 14 are considered. The ribbed straight channel of $D_{ho}/D_{hi}=1.0$ were also used. The ribbed divergent wall is manufactured with a fixed rib height (e) of 10 mm and the ratio of rib spacing (p) to height 6, 10, and 14. The measurement was run with range of Reynolds numbers from 24,000 to 84,000. The comparison shows that the ratio of p/e=6 has the greatest thermal performance in the divergent channel under two constraints; identical mass flow rate and identical pressure drop.

This paper reports the conceptual design process for a floating metocean data measurement system (FMDMS) for measuring wind information at sea. The FMDMS consists of three circular pontoons, columns, and a deck, which the LiDAR (lighting detection and ranging) is installed on. The dynamics of the mooring lines and motion responses of the FMDMS were analyzed using commercial codes such as WAMIT and OrcaFlex. One design criterion of the developed FMDMS was to maintain the motion responses as small as possible to enhance the LiDAR's accuracy. Starting with the preliminary design parameters such as the FMDMS's principal dimensions, weight, and important parameters of mooring system, we checked whether the FMDMS met the design requirements at each design stage, and then made modifications as necessary. The developed FMDMS showed a large pitch behavior for a small heave motion.
The purpose of this work is to analyze and synthesize the pseudo-periodicity of voice using a source model. A speech signal has periodic characteristics; however, it is not completely periodic. While periodicity contributes significantly to the production of prosody, emotional status, etc., pseudo-periodicity contributes to the distinctions between normal and abnormal status, the naturalness of normal speech, etc. Measurement of pseudo-periodicity is typically performed through parameters such as jitter and shimmer. For studying the pseudo-periodic nature of voice in a controlled environment, through collected natural voice, we can only observe the distributions of the parameters, which are limited by the size of collected data. If we can generate voice samples in a controlled manner, experiments that are more diverse can be conducted. In this study, the probability distributions of vowel pitch variation are obtained from the speech signal. Based on the probability distribution of vocal folds, pulses with a designated jitter value are synthesized. Then, the target and re-analyzed jitter values are compared to check the validity of the method. It was found that the jitter synthesis method is useful for normal voice synthesis.

Measurements of local heat/mass transfer coefficients in rotating two-pass ducts are presented. Ducts of three different aspect ratios (W/H), 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0, are employed with a fixed hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of 26.7 nm. $90^{\circ}$-rib turbulators are attached on the leading and trailing walls symmetrically. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio ($e/D_h$) is 0.056, and the rib pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 10. The experimental conditions are the same as those of the previous part of the study. As the rib height-to-duct height ratio (e/H) increases, the core flow is more disturbed and accelerated in the midsections of ribs. Therefore, the obtained data show higher heat/mass transfer in the higher aspect ratio duct. Dean vortices also augment heat/mass transfer in the turn and in the upstream region of the second pass. However, the effect becomes less significant for the higher aspect ratio because the surface area increases in the present geometric condition. The effect of rotation produces heat/mass transfer discrepancy.

Transmission error (TE) is the most important cause of gear noise and vibration because TEs affect the changes of the force and the speed of gears. TE is usually expressed as an angular deviation, or a linear deviation measured at the pitch point and calculated at successive positions of the pinion as it goes through the meshing cycle. Accurate measurement of TE for gear transmission will provide a reasonable basis for gear design, manufacturing processes and quality control. Therefore, in order to study the accuracy of the gear transmission, stability, TE, vibration and noise after gear micro-geometry modification, a gear transmission test rig is proposed in this paper, which is based on the existing technical conditions, by using reasonable testing methods, hardware and a signal processing method. All of the details and the experience can be taken into consideration in the next upgraded test rig.

This paper presents a control effectiveness analysis of the hawkmoth Manduca sexta. A multibody dynamic model of the insect that considers the time-varying inertia of two flapping wings is established, based on measurement data from the real hawkmoth. A six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) multibody flight dynamics simulation environment is used to analyze the effectiveness of the control variables defined in a wing kinematics function. The aerodynamics from complex wing flapping motions is estimated by a blade element approach, including translational and rotational force coefficients derived from relevant experimental studies. Control characteristics of flight dynamics with respect to the changes of three angular degrees of freedom (stroke positional, feathering, and deviation angle) of the wing kinematics are investigated. Results show that the symmetric (asymmetric) wing kinematics change of each wing only affects the longitudinal (lateral) flight forces and moments, which implies that the longitudinal and lateral flight controls are decoupled. However, there are coupling effects within each plane of motion. In the longitudinal plane, pitch and forward/backward motion controls are coupled; in the lateral plane, roll and side-translation motion controls are coupled.

GPS cannot determine random errors such as multipath and signal cutoff caused by surrounding environment that determines the visibility of satellites and the speed of data creation and transmission is lower than the speed of vehicles, it is difficult to determine accurate dynamic positions. Thus this study purposed to implement a method of deciding the accurate dynamic position of vehicles by combining AHRS (Attitude Heading Reference System) IMU (Initial Measurement Unit) based on low-priced MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) in order to provide the information of attitude, position and speed at a high transmission rate without external help. This study conducted an initialization test to decide dynamic position using AHRS IMU sensor, and derived attitude correction angles of vehicles against time through regression analysis. The roll angle was $y=(A{\times}10^{-6})x^2 -(B{\times}10^{-5})x+Cr{\times}10^{-2}$ and the pitch angle was $y=(A{\times}10^{-6})x^2-(B{\times}10^{-7})x+C{\times}10^{-2}$, each of which was derived from second-degree polynomial regression analysis. It was also found that the heading angle was stabilized with variation less than $1^{\circ}$ after 60 seconds.

In this paper, characteristics of infrasound and low-frequency noise emission from large modern wind turbines are experimentally investigated. The sound measurement procedures of IEC 61400-11 and ISO 7196 are utilized to field test and evaluation of noise emission from each of 1.5 MW and 660 kW wind turbines using the stall regulation and the pitch control for the power regulation, respectively. It was found that the G-weighted SPLs of low-frequency noise including infrasound shows positive correlation with the wind speeds, irrespective of methods of power regulation. This highlights the potential complaint of local community against the infrasound and low-frequency noise of wind turbines. The comparison of measured data with the existing hearing thresholds and criteria curves shows that it is highly probable that the low-frequency noise from the 1.5 MW and 660 kW wind turbines in the frequency range over 30 Hz leads to the psychological complaint of ordinary adults, and that the infrasound in the frequency range from 5 Hz to 8 Hz causes the complaint by rattling the house fitting such as doors and windows.

Recent trends for the miniaturization and weight reduction of portable electronic parts is the use of subminiature components. Assembly of the miniaturized components requires subminiature screws of which pitch sizes are in a micrometer scale. To produce such a subminiature screw with high precision threads, not only a precision forming technology but also high-precision measurement technique is required. In the present work, a vision inspection system is developed to measure the thread profile of a subminiature screw. Optical simulation based on a ray tracing method is used to design and analyze the optical system of the vision inspection apparatus. Through this simulation, optical performance of the developed vision inspection system is optimized. The image processing algorithm for the precision screw inspection is also discussed.
