Development of cryogenic free-piston reciprocating expander utilizing phase controller

  • A free-piston reciprocating expander is a device which operates without any mechanical linkage to a stationary part. Since the motion of the floating piston is only controlled by the pressure difference at two ends of the piston, this kind of expander may indispensably require a sophisticated active control system equipped with multiple valves and reservoirs. In this paper, we have suggested a novel design that can further reduce complexity of the previously developed cryogenic free-piston expander configuration. It is a simple replacement of both multiple valves and reservoirs by a combination of an orifice valve and a reservoir. The functional characteristic of the integrated orifice-reservoir configuration is similar to that of a phase controller applied in a pulse tube refrigerator so that we designate the one as a phase controller. Depending on the orifice valve size in the phase controller, the different PV work which affects the expander performance is generated. The numerical model of this unique free-piston reciprocating expander utilizing a phase controller is established to understand and analyze quantitatively the performance variation of the expander under different valve timing and orifice valve size. The room temperature experiments are carried out to examine the performance of this newly developed cryogenic expander.

Simulation on Hydraulic Control Characteristics of Regulator System in Bent-Axis Type Piston Pump

  • Variable displacement axial piston pumps are widely used for raising the energy level of the fluid in hydraulic systems. And the regulator is the device which regulates the discharge flow of the piston pump by controlling the swivel angle. The regulator receives the hydraulic pilot pressure and controls the pump output flow depending on the machine load and engine speed. This work deals with constant power control (horsepower control) in the design of a regulator by using a bent-axis type piston pump. In order to effectively use engine power, we must keep the horsepower from the engine to the pump constant. Therefore the regulator operates the constant power control. As a result, optimum power usage is obtained by accurately following the power hyperbola. This study focused on developing a simulation model of a regulator. First, the governing equations of the regulator are derived, and analysis is performed by computer simulation, which can identify significant parameters of regulator. As a result, the variation of the swivel angle, flow rate, hyperbolic curve, inner leakage and responsibility are simulated, and significant parameters of a regulator are identified.

A Comparisonal Analysis Among the Processes of Piston -Pin Production (Piston-Pin 제작공정의 비교해석)

  • Several cold extrusion processes to produce an axisymmetric steel piston-pin are investigated for comparing each other. Two methods among four conventinal ones are selected to be simulated using the rigid-plastic finite element method. One of the both methods using a mechanical press has one stage process and the other utilizing a cold header applies a multi-stage process to produce a final product. Because the main process is a backward extrusion, the design criteria such as the backward extrusion ration and punch diameter to depth rationare ocnsidered. FEM analysis is performed mainly for strain distributin and load-stroke relationshis. Based on the results of preliminary simulatin, both process sequences are proved to have proper charicteristics suitable for each production method in terms of maximum load. Those simulation results will be a good design criteria in the future work to advance the manufacturing process.

Dynamic Analysis of a Discharge Valve for Electrodynamic Oscillating Compressor (전동형 진동식 압축기 토출밸브의 동적해석)

  • Discharge valve mechanism for an electrodynamic-oscillating compressor is different from that of a conventional reciprocating compressor. It has a larger discharge port area, heavier valve mass and stiffer valve spring comparing with the reciprocating one. Since the motion of piston is not kinematically restricted as in conventional reciprocating compressors, the stroke of the piston can change sensitively with supplied boltage and load. Thus piston can impact with discharge valve occasionally. This work deals on dynamic analysis of discharge valve considering all of those different characteristics. Impact is considered by a spring-mass model, and the pressure fluctuation at the both sides of the valve is also included considering the discharge port area and valve spring preload. It is assumed that piston moves in the region of between top and bottom dead center not by calculating piston motion from an electrodynamic equation but by getting values through experiment. Discharge pressure fluctuation is calculated using Helmholtz modeling. Finally, dynamic model for a discharge valve is constructed. In order to validate the model analysis results, the valve motion is experimentally measured and compared with analysis.

  • Approximately 30 to 70 % of the mechanical losses in a reciprocating engine are contributed by the friction at the piston ring-cylinder interface. The friction characteristics of the piston ring during engine operation is known to as mixed lubrication experimentally. The mixed lubrication models based on the Average Reynolds Equation have been used by this time in order to study the tribological performance of the ring. However, the Average Reynolds Equation contains the expected value term(${\bar{h}}_r$) of local film thickness as well as nominal film thickness(h), so that the work of numerically solving ${\bar{h}}_r$ must be included to obtain the pressure in the oil film. The process of solving ${\bar{h}}_T$ causes a greater multiplying in the numerical solution. In this paper the mixed lubrication analysis using the Simplified Average Reynolds Equation in the piston ring is presented. This equation has only h as oil film thickness term. Therefore the tedious numerical procedure required to obtain ${\bar{h}}_T$ is not needed, and also, computation time can be reduced.

  • The importance of variable displacement piston pump is recently increasing in industrial applications, as it is widely used for raising the energy level of the fluid in hydraulic system. First, the governing equations of the regulator are derived, and analysis is performed by numerical simulation in which significant parameters of regulator are identified. Also, we designed and manufactured the prototype of the constant power control regulator for experiments. The experimental results show the responsibility and pressure-flowrate characteristics and these are compared with the theoretical analysis. As the result, it is confirmed that the characteristics of the designed regulator correspond to the numerical simulation.

  • KIA는 호평의 Bongo-9을 기본 model로 하여 도시형 다목적 leisure car인 Bongo-town을 개 발하게 되었다. TX엔진은 Bongo-town 탑재용으로 기존 1.3l TC 엔진을 volume-up 하여 전 회전 영역에서 괄목할 성능향상을 보였으며 특히 탑재차량의 특성을 고려하여 저속영역 torque를 강조하였고 부품호환성 및 생산 설비의 공용화에도 주력했다. 주요 개발내용은, 1) Cooling passage 개선 및 full siamese화 2) Piston과 connecting rod의 신설계 3) Piston 조합의 semi floating화 4) Cam shaft profile 선정 및 valve timing 변경 5) Distributor 최적진각특성 결정 6) Carburetor 개발 7) Torque limited fan and fan drive 채용 등이다. 상기내용중 중요한 몇가지를 기술하고자 한다.

Design Rules of Hybrid Stepping Machine for Free Piston Engine

  • This paper presents the hybrid stepping machine for linear oscillating generators. The focus of the work is the suggestion of the improved model through the comparison of proposed models ; new flux concentrating PMs mover of the hybrid stepping generator is proposed based on the symmetrical and non-symmetrical stator cores of the surface mounted PMs mover, and non-slanted PMs and slanted PMs of the flux concentrating PMs mover. It is achieved using equivalent magnetic circuit considering leakage elements. Finally, this study suggests new hybrid stepping structure of linear oscillating generator.

A Study on the High Speed of Cutting Tool Feed System for the Noncircular Machining (비진원 가공용 공구 이송장치의 고속화 성능에 관한 연구)

  • With the advance of processing technology , so as to spare fuel, piston heads used in automobile reciprocating engine have complex 3-dimension, with respect to shape such as ovality, profile, eccentricity, offset, recess. Therefore, coming out of the existing process work used master cam. the process work is performed using a CNC lathe. For a precision processing, the processing work is need to make study of high speed feed gear synchronized with the rotative speed of main spindle. And then the high speed feeding system must maintain high dynamic stiffness, high speed and high positioning accuracy . In this paper, in order to achieve high speed cutting tool feeding. The linear brushless DC motor is used for satisfying this process work. The ball bush and turicite is used as the guidance of the feed gear system. Also linear encoders, digital servo amplifiers and controller are used for controlling driving motor. This paper presents the design and simulation of the new tool feed system for noncircular machining.

  • Auto injector grouting method as low pressure injected by using epoxy and Boyle's law is very excellent method in economical efficiency and construction work because injected process can be dealt with collectively. For estimation of filling capacity purpose of this study compared the Auto injector method with the piston injector method. In this study, the tests allow for width of crack, injected angle of epoxy resin and injected method were performed using concrete block specimen making artificial crack. The results of test, tilling et1iciency of epoxy by Auto Injector grouting method verify to better than the piston injector method and uniaxial strength increased about 11% than standard specimen.
