  • If a spoiler was attached to the pipeline investigated in a previous study, a strong flow and vortex at the lower part caused scouring and thus an asymmetric pressure distribution, which assisted in the analysis of the self-burial structure where a down force was applied to the pipe. However, only the fluid-pipe interaction was considered, excluding the medium (seabed), when practically burying the pipeline. Thus, this study applied a numerical model (LES-WASS-2D) to directly analyze the non-linear interactions among the fluid, pipe, and seabed in order to perform numerical simulations of a pipeline with a spoiler installed on the seabed. This allowed the self-burial mechanism of a pipeline with a spoiler to be analyzed in the same context as the previous study that considered only the fluid-pipe interaction. However, when a pipeline was installed on the seabed, a strong flow and vortex were found at the front of the bottom, and a spoiler accelerated the fluid resistances. This hydraulic phenomenon will reinforce the scouring and down force on the pipeline. In the general consideration of the numerical analysis results by the specifications and arrangements of the spoiler, a pipeline with a spoiler was found to be the most effective for the self-burial function.

  • In this study, the overseas failure frequency data of the high-pressure gas pipeline were investigated to apply QRA of high-pressure gas pipeline. The typical overseas failure frequency data of high-pressure gas pipeline are DOT of United States, EGIG of Europe, and UKOPA of United Kingdom (UK). Comparative analysis of these data was shown that EGIG data was suitable for the situation in Korea. In order to apply QRA of high-pressure gas pipeline, non-linear regression analysis using the failure frequency data in the report of EGIG 8th was performed. In the future, intensive researches are required for the external interference because about 50% of the failure frequency of all incidents is the external interference, and for combining of domestic and overseas data.

  • This paper introduces modeling and simulation results for pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) with bypass flow control in natural gas pipeline. The dynamic behaviour of the PIG depends on the different pressure across its body and the bypass flow through it. The system dynamics includes: dynamics of driving gas flow behind the PIG, dynamics of expelled gas in front of the PIG, dynamics of bypass flow, and dynamics of the PIG. The bypass flow across the PIG is treated as incompressible flow with the assumption of its Mach number smaller than 0.45. The governing nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations for unsteady gas flows are solved by method of characteristics (MOC) with the regular rectangular grid under appropriate initial and boundary conditions. The Runge-Kuta method is used for solving the steady flow equations to get initial flow values and the dynamic equation of the PIG. The sampling time and distance are chosen under Courant-Friedrich-Lewy (CFL) restriction. The simulation is performed with a pipeline segment in the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) low pressure system, Ueijungboo-Sangye line. Simulation results show us that the derived mathematical model and the proposed computational scheme are effective for estimating the position and velocity of the PIG with bypass flow under given operational conditions of pipeline.

  • This paper deals with verification of the theoretical model for dynamic behavior of Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) traveling through high pressure natural gas pipeline. The dynamic behavior of the PIG depends on the differential pressure across its body. This differential pressure is generated by injected gas flow behind the tail of the PIG and expelled gas flow in front of its nose. To analyze the dynamic behavior characteristics such as gas flow in pipeline, and the PIG position and velocity, not only the mathematical models are derived, but also the theoretical models must be certified by actual pigging experiment. But there is not any found results of research on the experimental certification for dynamic behavior of the PIG. The reason is why the fabrication of the PIG as well as, a field application are very difficult. In this research, the effectiveness of the introduced solution using the method of characteristics (MOC) was certified through field application. In-line inspection tool, 30" geometry PIG, was fabricated and actual pigging was carried out at the pipeline segment in Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) high pressure system, Incheon LT (LNG Terminal) -Namdong GS (Governor Station) line. Pigging is fulfilled successfully. Comparison of simulation results with experimental results show that the derived mathematical models and the proposed computational schemes are effective for predicting the position and velocity of the PIG with a given operational conditions of pipeline.

  • Pressure propagation and attenuation characteristics in a hydraulic pipeline with a bellows type accumulator was investigated by theoretical analyses and experiments. In the first stage of the study, equations to evaluate the amount of oil volume charged into the bellows together with nitrogen gas were proposed. In the next stage, the authors suggested a mathematical model based on transfer matrix method to describe the dynamic characteristics of the pipe element with a metal bellows type accumulator. Through comparisons and considerations of the experimental and the numerical data shown in frequency domain, the validity of the mathematical model was confirmed.

  • In this study, the behavior of underground pipeline subjected to pile driving is examined using the verified finite element model based on the field experiment. Young's modules of surface soil is varied and elastic modulus of the other soil layer is fixed. The pile driving force model proposed by Mounir E. Mabsout in 1999 was used and it was functions of time and of force. The forcing function applied on this study considers the kinetic energy of ram located at 1.2m height with 7 tonf. The 3-layered pipeline is composed of steel(inner) pipe, PUR(Polyurethane Resin, filler) and HDPE(outer) pipe, and the length/diameter of main steel pipe is 20m/0.8m(O.D). It is used for district heating pipes in Korea. The results are expressed in terms of Von Mises stress, displacement, and vibration velocity for each soil condition. From the results of the analyses, PUR which is originally intended as a thermal insulation of inner pipe shows performance as a structural member which distributes external pressure.

  • This study was concerned on the application of a hybrid approach for analyzing the buried pipelines deformations subjected to earthquakes. Nonlinear time-history analysis of Finite Element (FE) model of buried pipelines, which was modeled using laboratory data, has been performed via selected earthquakes. In order to verify the FE model with experiments, a statistical test was done which demonstrated a good conformity. Then, the FE model was developed and the optimum intersection angle of pipeline and fault was obtained via genetic algorithm. Transient seismic strain of buried pipeline in the optimum intersection angle of pipeline and fault was investigated considering the pipes diameter, the distance of pipes from fault, the soil friction angles and seismic response duration of buried pipelines. Also, a two-layer perceptron Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was trained using results of FE model, and a nonlinear relationship was obtained to predict the bending strain of buried pipelines based on the pipes diameter, intersection angles of the pipelines and fault, the soil friction angles, distance of pipes from the fault, and seismic response duration; whereas it contains a wide range of initial input data without any requirement to laboratory measurements.

  • The study was focused on the development of computational scheme in three dimensional configurations by applying effective heat capacity model to the numerical procedure in order to predict the temperature profiles of a buried pipeline and the frozen penetration depth(FPD) of a freezing soil medium. To realize this, the investigator conducted the unsteady state heat transfer analysis, using the commercial code ABAQUS, for the freezing granite soil medium including a pipeline in a closed system. The proposed model took into consideration the phase change effect of in situ pore water in the frozen fringe. The comparison of results obtained by the proposed model and the actual performances was valuable in establishing a level of confidence in the application of introduced theory.

  • In this study, a prototype model of earthquake loss estimation method will be proposed for the quantitative and qualitative damage evaluation of buried pipeline subjected to Permanent Ground Deformation(PGD) due to liquefaction. With this objective, domestic and foreign status of the arts related with earthquake loss estimation method is summarized at first. Domestic development of computer aided earthquake loss estimation method seems to be difficult for the time being. Thus, referring to HAZUS : Earthquake Loss Estimation Methodology which is developed by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and NIBS (National Institute of Building Sciences), earthquake loss estimation procedure of buried pipeline subjected to PGD due to liquefaction are proposed, and then exemplary loss estimation are executed. Considering that there have been no practical earthquake loss estimation method and procedure in Korea, the research accomplishments such as above are considered to be helpful for the substantial development of earthquake loss estimation method of buried pipeline subjected to PGD due to liquefaction.
