In an effort to improve the major tree species in Korea, the seed of Robinia pseudoacacia, Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and Larix leptolepis were treated with X-ray and thermal neutron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and germination rate of the seed and some characteristics of the seedlings from irradiated seed were investigated and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The germination rate of the irradiated seed of Robinia pseudoacacia, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and Pinus rigida was decreased, when the irradiation time of thermal neutron increased from 3 hours to 9 hours. The seed of Larix leptolepis was completely died out in all range of irradiation time. 2. The seed of Pinus densiflora, Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus rigida showed low germination rate, when the dosage of radiation increased in the range of 10,000r-30,000r X-ray. This dosage of radiation was almost lethal to the seed of Pinus thunbergii and Larix leptolepis. 3. The growth rate of radiated Robinia pseudoacacia has been decreased when the dosage of X-ray and thermal neutron increased. However, the trees treated with thermal neutron for 3 hours showed 14.9 percent-increase in seedling height and some thornless individuals appeared in this treatment. 4. Individuals with variegated leaf, rugose leaf and albino were appeared in X-ray and thermal neutron treatment. 5. Abnormal mitosis of somatic cell, cell with two nucleoli, cell with two nuclei and chromosome clump in mitosis of somatic cell were observed in Robinia pseudoacacia irradiated with thermal neutron. 6. Resistanty against pawdery mildew was decreased in Robinia pseudoacacia radiated with X-ray and thermal neutron. 7. Length of stomata did not show any difference however number of stomata per unit area decreased in Robinia pseudoacacia radiated with thermal neutron. The leaves of Robinia pseudoacacia radiated with thermal neutron were thicker than those of non-treated one, but width of palisade tissue was decreased. The most sensitive one among those species to the thermal neutron treatment was Larix leptolepis, followed by Pinus densiflora, Robinia pseudoacacia, Pinus thunbergii and Pinus rigida in the order. In X-ray treatment, the most sensitive one was Larix leptolepis, followed by Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, Pinus rigida and Robinia pseudoacacia in the order. Morphological, cytological variation of the radiated Robinia pseudoacacia seemed to indicate some possibility to be used for tree improvement.
Soil condition, total number of bacteria, soil amylase activity and microbial biomass $(CO_2-C)$ were measured at soil of different forest types. And the difference of the allelopathic effect was determined between fresh leaf extract of Quercus acutissima and Pinus rigida to the bacteria isolated from soil of different forest types. 1. Total number of bacteria in Carpinus laxiflora forest soil was 4~7 times larger than that in pinus desiflora forest soil. 2. Soil amylase activity was positively correlated with total number of soil bacteria and soil organic matter content. The amylase activity at F layer was 4~5 times larger than that at H layer, and that at H layer was 2~4 times larger than that at A layer. 3. Seasonal changes of microbial biomass showed a peak in summer, and vertical distribution of microbial biomass decreased with increasing soil depth. The microbial biomass in Pinus densiflora forest soil was larger than that in Quercus serrata forest soil. 4. Fresh leaf extract of Pinus rigida and Quercus acutissima showed an acceleration or inhibition effect on the growth of soil bacteria, and that of !. acutissima inhibited larger number of soil bacterial strains than that of P. rigida. 4.2% and 25% of soil bacterial strains isolated from soil of P. rigida and Q. acutissima forests were inhibited by fresh leaf extract of P. rigida and Q. acutissima, respectively.

To estimate the aboveground biomass of Pinus rigida and Pinus rigida ${\times}$ taeda 22-year-old plantations, the experimental plots of $200m^2$ in size located in Kwangju of Jeonlanam-do were selected. Nine sample trees selected at each plot taking account of DBH distribution were felled and the diagram of oven-dry weight distribution of stem, branch, and needle for each 1m segment was constructed. The logarithmic regression equations between dry weight of each component (stems, branches, and needles) and the variable of $(DBH)^2{\cdot}H$ were obtained. The aboveground standing crops was estimated to be as much as 71.61 and 142.32 tons of dry matter per hectare in P. rigida and P. rigida ${\times}$ taeda stand respectively. The net production was estimated as 10.81 and 10.46 t/ha/yr and the net assimilation rate 1.32 and 1.00 kg/kg/yr in P. rigida and P. rigida ${\times}$ taeda stand respectively. And the efficiency of needles to produce stem was 0.97 and 0.81 kg/kg/yr in same order.
A comparison betwen the productivity of Pinus rigida which is native in the Eastern United States, and P. rigitaeda which is F1 hybrid between P. rigida and P. taeda, has been established. For each tree the diameter at breast height (D) and the height of tree (H) were measured in three years. The standard sample trees were down and then weighed each organ. From obtained data the allometric relation between $D_2H$ and dry weight of the trunk (Ws), the branches (Wb) and the leaves (Wl) of P. rigida were approxmated by $$Ws=0.0592 (D^2H)^{0.837}$$$$Wb=0.0065 (D^2H)^{0.989}$$$$Wl=0.0447(D^2H)^{0.690}$$ and those of P. rigitaeda were approximated by $$Ws=0.0522 (D^2H)^{0.843}$$$$Wb=0.0037 (D^2H)^{1.117}$$$$Wl=0.0207 (D^2H)^{0.856}$$ From the above, the standing crops of above ground of P. rigida were estimated to be as much as 16.93-34.35 ton dry matter per ha, and those of P. rigitaeda were 20.45-45.55 ton per ha. Annual net production was appraised at 8.07-9.35 ton/ha.yr in P. rigida and at 11.59-13.41 ton/ha.yr in P. rigitaeda (1.0:1.4). It is assumed that high productivity of P. rigitaeda stand compared with P. rigida resulted from an increase of the leaf amount with age. Photosynthetic ability under the saturated light of the current and theold leaves of P. rigida were respectively 2.62 and 0.66mg CO2/g. d. wt..hr and those of P. rigitaeda were 1.17 and 0.96mg CO2/g.d. wt.hr. Respiration of the current and the old leaves at $25^{\circ}C$ were 1.00 and 0.90 mg CO2/g. d. wt..hr. in P. rigida and 0.90 and 0.45mg CO2/g.d.wt.hr in P. rigitaeda. It is assumed that photosynthetic longevity of P. rigitaeda leaves was vigorously maintained longer than that of P. rigida.

The flora of Kunsan Wolmyong park was 77 families, 168 genera, 240 species, 2 subspecies, 35 varieties, 1 formae or 278taxa. Using the Phytosociology method, 12 plant communities were recognized ; Alnus japonica, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, Pinus rigida, Castanea crenata, Quercus acutissima, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Alnus hirsuta, Quercus serrata, Aluns firma, Liriope platyphylla and Reynoutria communities. Similarity between different communities was low for most of the cases except for Pinus densiflora, Pinus Thunbergii and Pinus rigida communities kept comparely high with ond another. Species diversity was analyzed by species richness(SR), species diversity index(H') and evenness(J'). Castanea crenata, Robinia pseudo-acacia and Alnus firma communities were higher in SR, H' than the other communities. But Pinus rigida, Quercus acutissima and castanea crenata communities were higher in evenness than the other communities. To investigate the plant community structure and to establish restoration counter plan of a Wolmyeng Park in Kunsan City. As a remedial approach, following is propesed. first, Establishment of an adequate planting plan and development of slope stalilization method by planting native species. second, Sellection of adequate species by planting experiments for pioneer species, native species, and dietary species. third, Landscape planting zones should be managed artificially, the others be managed with ecological approach.
In order to investigate the inhibitory index (I) and the effects of hot water extraction treatments and addition of accelerators on the index in hardening of Korean lignocellulosics, portland cement (Type I) and water system, hydration tests were carried out on 8 Korean lignocellulosics, namely, Pinus densiflora, Pinus rigida, Pinus koraiensis, Abies holophylla, Larix leptoiepis, Populus alba-glandulosa, rice husk and rice stalk with or without hot water extraction or chemical additives. The inhibitory index of Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida found to be suitable under limited conditions for composite without any treatment. With hot water treatment rice husk, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, and A hies holophylla were reclassified from not suitable to suitable under limited conditions. Combining hot water extraction with chemical addition of accelerator, calcium chloride of magnesium chloride, Populus alba-glandulosa, Larix leptolepis, and Pinus rigida became highly suitable.
A village grove is the one fostered and protected for a district's traditional life near the vicinity of a ruderal village. This research is done to grasp potential natural vegetation, to use a basis data needed for its management and preservation as well as restoration project by examining the vegetation and flora targeting a village grove of the southern district of Gyeonggi-do which has been seriously damaged subsequent to a rapidly progressing city development. According to the survey, there appeared an outgrowth flora of Pteridophyta consisting of 69 families, 136 genera, 20 varieties, 3 forms, 170 species-totalling to 193 taxa. Urbanization index was revealed to 4.55% and naturalization rate 6.74%. In life-cycle pattern, perennials were found to show the highest distribution rate; in infiltration-multiplication strategies, human wave tactics type was found to be the highest 51%, consisting of 98 species, and naturalization rate also was revealed to be 6.74%. The vegetation unit was divided into a total of 11 patterns, such as a community of Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Pinus rigida community, Pinus densiflora-Castanea crenata community, Pinus rigida community, Pinus rigida-Castanea crenata community, Pinus rigida-Quercus acutissima community, Castanea crenata community, Castanea crenata-Quercus acutissima community, Quercus acutissima community, Quercus acutissima-Robinia pseudo-acacia community and Robinia pseudo-acacia community. Quercus acutissima community is of a community type dominated by Quercus acutissima, in place of Pinus densiflora community selected by natural succession.

The quality characteristics of the woodpellet manufactured from two domestic pines (Pinus densiflora S. et Z. and Pinus rigida Mill.) were investigated for the efficient energy use of woody biomass resources. Properties of woodpellets such as moisture content, heating value, ash content, apparent density and durability were determined by using the standard test method of woodpellets of Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI) and elemental analysis. The results of elemental analysis for C, H, O and N showed 61.42% carbon, 5.56% hydrogen, 32.87% oxygen, and 0.15% nitrogen for Pinus densiflora S. et Z. and 61.03% carbon, 5.96% hydrogen, 32.83% oxygen, and 0.18% nitrogen for Pinus rigida Mill. No significant difference between Pinus densiflora S. et Z. and Pinus rigida Mill was observed on elemental analysis. Heating values of each woodpellet were ranged from 19.00 to 19.42 MJ/kg which satisfied the first grade quality standard (${\geq}18.0MJ/kg$) by KFRI. The ash contents of woodpellet were slightly different between Pinus densiflora S. et Z. and Pinus rigida Mill., and satisfied the first grade quality standard (${\leq}0.7%$) by KFRI. Apparent density of woodpellet (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) was passed the first grade standard level (${\geq}640kg/m^3$), and woodpellets from Pinus rigida Mill. satisfied the second grade quality of the standard. The moisture contents of each woodpellet were satisfied by the first grade quality standard (${\leq}10%$). The durability of woodpellet (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) was passed the third grade level (${\geq}95%$), but Pinus rigida Mill. woodpellet was insufficient to satisfy the quality standard.
In this study, we carried out the emissions analysis of CO and $non-CO_2$ for the age-classes of various pine trees(Pinus koraiensis, Pinus densiflora, Pinus rigida Mill., Pinus thunbergii Parl.) to estimate of emission factors of the crown layer and surface layer in the forest fire. We used the thermal characteristic analyzer cone heater and NDIR analyzer in order to measure amount of emission. As a result, the major emissions of Pinus koraiensis were $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ and that of Pinus thunbergii Parl. was only CO. The major emissions of the most of pine trees were NO and $N_2O$. The $CO_2$ emission of Pinus thunbergii Parl. was the highest about as $7.26{\times}10^{-2}{\sim}1.63{\times}10^{-1}g$ and next came Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida Mill.. And the CO emission of Pinus thunbergii Parl. was about $5.14{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}6.58{\times}10^{-3}g$ and followed by Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida Mill.. The emissions of $CH_4$, NO, and $N_2O$ showed small differences between species and the emission of $CH_4$ was $8.37{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}2.55{\times}10^{-4}g$, and NO was $6.65{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}2.0{\times}10^{-4}g$ and $N_2O$ was $1.42{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}2.09{\times}10^{-3}g$ in all species. Particularly, the emission of Pinus thunbergii Parl. was the highest in all pine trees except $CH_4$.
