  • Detailed field and strain dependence of the critical current and the n-value for an internal-tin processed $Nb_3Sn$ strand have been measured. Both the compressive and tensile strain is applied reversibly using Walter spiral probe made of BeCu up to 0.73 %. There is a correlation between the critical current and the n-value for the $Nb_3Sn$ strand studied in this work and the field dependence of the n-value is in agreement with a recent empirical formula. It was further shown that the critical current can be reasonably well fitted by the scaling law based on strong-coupling theory of superconductivity using the relation between the critical current and the n-value.

  • The magnetic properties of heat treated O-series high temperature superconducting (HTS) GdBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes which were formed of Ag/GdBCO/Buffer-layers/Stainless Steel (SS), were investigated by employing a Quantum Design PPMS-14. Using a modified Bean model, the critical current density Jc values have been estimated from the 𝚫mirr(H) data, which are obtained by measuring the magnetic moment m(H) loops. For a range of intermediate fields, which are interacting or collective flux pinning area, the magnetic flux behaviors were investigated from the relationship Jc ∝ H. In addition, the changes of irreversibility magnetic field Hirr line of heat-treated O-series HTS GdBCO CC tapes were analyzed, according as the annealing temperature under oxygen flowing increases. Both weak and strong break-downs were found by examining the changes of irreversibility magnetic field Hirr lines.

  • To reduce the processing cost of the single grain REBCO (RE: Rare-earth elements) bulk superconductors, a cost-effective process should be developed. One possible way of developing the cost-effective process is the use of low-cost precursor powders. In this study, the single grain YBCO superconductors were fabricated using a home made powder. $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y123) powders were synthesized at $850-900^{\circ}C$ in air by the powder calcination method with repeated crushing and heat treatment steps. The processing parameters for the fabrication of single grain Y123 bulk superconductors, $T_{max}$ (maximum temperature), $T_p$ (peritectic temperature) and a cooling rate through $T_p$ were optimized. To enhance the flux pinning capacity of the single grain Y123 samples, $Y_2BaCuO_5$ (Y211) particles were dispersed in the Y123 matrix by adding $Y_2O_3$ powder to the calcined Y123 powder. Applying the optimized processing condition, the single grain Y123 superconductors with $T_c=91\;K$ and $J_c=1.5{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$ at 2 T were successfully fabricated using a home made powder. The levitation forces and trapped magnetic field at 77 K measured using a Nd-B-Fe permanent magnet of 5300 G were 47 N and 3000 G, respectively, which are comparable to those obtained for the samples fabricated using a commercial grade Y123 powders.

  • Macroscopic hysteresis loops and microscopic magnetic moment distributions have been determined by a three-dimensional (3D) model for exchange-coupled Sm-Co/${\alpha}-Fe$/Sm-Co trilayers with in-plane collinear easy axes. These results are carefully compared with the popular one-dimensional (1D) micromagnetic models and recent experimental data. It is found that the results obtained from the two methods match very well, especially for the remanence and coercivity, justifying the calculations. Both nucleation and coercive fields decrease monotonically as the soft layer thickness $L^s$ increases while the largest maximum energy product (roughly 50 MGOe) occurs when the thicknesses of hard and soft layers are 5 nm and 15 nm, respectively. Moreover, the calculated angular distributions in the thickness direction for the magnetic moments are similar. Nevertheless, the calculated nucleation and pinning fields as well as the energy products by 3D OOMMF are systematically smaller than those given by the 1D model, due mainly to the stray fields at the corners of the films. These demagnetization fields help the magnetic moments at the corners to deviate from the previous saturation state and facilitate the nucleation. Such an effect enhances as $L^s$ increases. When the thicknesses of hard and soft layers are 10 nm and 20 nm, respectively, the pinning field difference is as large as 30%, while the nucleation fields have opposite signs.

  • A magnetic field annealing is firstly used for nanostructured Sm-Co/Co films, prepared by magnetron sputtering method. The effects of magnetic field annealing on single-layered Sm-Co films are different from those on multi-layered Sm-Co/Co films. A detailed analysis of microstructures and magnetic properties is made by means of HRTEM, Auger electron spectroscopy, XRD and Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS). From magnetic properties and microstructure analysis, it was confirmed that these differences originate from the effects of magnetic field annealing on crystallization behavior of the films. The relationship between magnetic properties and microstructures explains a different demagnetization process of single-layered and multilayered films. For the single-layered Sm-Co films, magnetic-field-annealing makes the main phases change from $CaCu_5/ to Zn_2Th_{17}$ structure, resulting in a decrease of coercivity. The results show that the magnetic-field-annealing is useful to improve the properties of nanostructured Sm-Co(30 nm)/Co(10 nm) films, which ascribe to improving the pinning effectiveness in coercivity mechanism and decreasing the magnetostatic interaction of films. A very high coercivity about 0.7 T was obtained from nanoscaled multi-layered Sm-Co(30 nm)-/Co(10 nm) films.

  • In order to realize the commercial application of HTSC materials, it is necessary to develop the fabrication process of high Tc oxide superconductor materials with desired shape and for practical application and high critical current density as well as good mechanical strength which can withstand high lorenz force generated at high magnetic field. Much studies have been concentrated to develop the fabrication technique for high critical current density but still there are a lot of gap which should be overcome for large scale application of HTSC materials at liquid nitrogen temperature. Recently some new fabrication techniques have been developed for YBaCuO bulk superconductor with high mechanical strength and critical current density. In this project, the establishment of fabrication condition and additive effects of second elements were examined so as to improve the related properties to the practical use of YBaCuO superconductor, and we reported the production of the YBaCuO high Tc superconductor by the pyrolysis method.

  • Measurements across single grain boundaries in YBCO thin films and bulk bicrystals have been used to demonstrate the influence of grain boundary structure on the critical current carried across the grain boundary. In particular, we show that one role of grain boundary structure is to change the degree of pinning along the boundary, thereby influencing the critical current. This effect can be used to explain the large difference in critical current density across grain boundaries in thin films compared to that for bulk bicrystal. These differences illustrate the distinction between the intrinsic mechanism of coupling across the grain boundary that determines the maximum possible critical current across a boundary and the measured critical current which is limited by dissipation due to the motion of vortices.

  • Carbon-based doping to MgB2 superconductor is the simplest approach to enhance the critical current densities under magnetic fields. Carbon quantum dots is synthesized in this work as a carbon provider to MgB2 superconductors. Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone is pyrolyzed and dispersed in dimethylfomamide solvent as a dopant to the mixture of Mg and B powders. Doped MgB2 bulk samples clearly show the decrease of a-axis lattice constant, grain refinements, and broadening of FWHM of diffraction peaks compared to un-doped MgB2 possibly due to the carbon substitution and/or boron vacancy at the boron site in MgB2 lattice. Also, high-field Jc for the doped MgB2 is enhanced significantly with the crossover about 3 T at 5 & 20 K when increasing the doping of carbon quantum dots.

  • Computer simulation of sensing current effects on the magnetic and magnetoresistance properties of a crossed spin-valve head is carried out. The spin-valve head has the following layer structure: Ta (8.0 nm)/NiMn (25 nm)/NiFe (2.5 nm)/Cu (3.0 nm)/NiFe (5.5 nm)/Ta (3.0 nm), and it is 1500 nm long and 600 nm wide. Even with a high pinning field of 300 Oe and a high hard-biased field of 50 Oe, the ideal crossed spin-valve structure, which is essential to the symmetry of the output signal and hence high density recording, is not realized mainly due to large interlayer magnetostatic interactions. This problem is solved by applying a suitable magnitude of sensing currents along the length direction generating magnetic fields in the width direction. The ideal spin-valve head is expected to show good symmetry of the output signal. This has not been shown explicitly in the present simulation, however, The reason for this is possibly related to the simple assumption used in this calculation that each magnetic layer consists of a single domain.

  • $MgB_2$ superconductor is highly sensitive to the Mg content. Even if the samples are synthesized with the appropriate looking stoichiometric ratio, the heat treatment leads to the loss of Mg either to ambiance or to MgO. To avoid it, either excess Mg is added in the starting powder or sealed ampoule annealing is employed. In this paper the effect of open Mg sintering ambiance on the ex-situ $MgB_2$ was studied to enhance its superconducting properties. The open Mg ambiance was created to avoid any overpressure of Mg by providing a hole in Fe tube used as sample holder. The decrease in resistivity of the synthesized sample was observed through the increased temperature dependence of electron-phonon interactions. A clear enhancement in the superconducting cross-sectional area and hence the in-field critical current density is obtained.
