  • Bucket trajectory is crucial regarding precision work with an excavator. In general, the bucket trajectory deviation is determined by the machining deviation of the frame, driving deviation of the driving hydraulic cylinder, clearance in the joints, and deformation of the structure. This paper investigated the relationship between the respective clearance in joints and the trajectory deviation of the bucket at the finishing work of the ditching for a 20-ton excavator. As a result, the larger the clearance, the larger deviation is increased at trajectory. However, it was found that the deviation of the rotation angle and displacement of the bucket was limited and the size of clearance does not affect closely on the contact angle of the pin shaft.

  • Hydraulic excavator in digging at the construction machinery is a widely used mechanical device. Excavator attachments are taken with structural load and fatigue during digging under applied reaction. Fatigue analysis is done at joint pin between bucket and arm of front attachment at excavator under the force of hydraulic cylinder in operation. It is analyzed how load can be supported at the lower driving body applied on the bucket. In this study, the deformation of arm and the fatigue result are examined when reaction force is applied on the attachment of excavator.

  • The resonant frequency of a gas-filled cylindrical Helmholtz resonator in a liquid is obtained analytically. The equation of motion of the resonator is derived by using the condition of equilibrium of forces acting on the mass in the neck of the resonator. The reaction force on the upper side of the cylinder due to the acceleration of external fluid and sound radiation is obtained by using the analytical results for the baffled circular-piston problem. From the frequency response function of the resonator, a formula to predict the resonant frequency of the resonator is derived. It is shown that the resonant frequency of the Helmholtz resonator significantly decreases due to the cushioning effect of gas inside the cavity. Therefore, when a pressure transducer is to be installed in a pin-hole type mounting method, much care should be paid to remove the gas from the cavity.

  • Inconel 690 for nuclear steam generator tube has more chromium than the conventionally used Inconel 600 in order to increase the corrosion resistance. TD evaluate the tribological characteristics under fretting condition the fretting tests as well as sliding tests were carried out in elevated temperature water environment. Fretting tests of the cross-cylinder type were done under various vibrating amplitudes and applied normal loads in order to measure the friction forces and wear volumes. Also, the conventional sliding tests of pin-en-disk type were carried out to compare the test results. In fretting, the friction was very sensitive to the load and the amplitude. The friction coefficient decreased with increasing load and decreasing amplitude. Also, the wear of Inconel 690 can be predictable using the work rate model. Depending on normal loads and vibrating amplitudes, distinctively different wear mechanisms and of ten drastically different wear rates can occur. It was fecund that the fretting wear coefficients in water were increased as increasing the temperature of water.

  • This paper presents the hardness and wear characteristic of bronze metals, which are manufactured by a sintering process with a high pressuring technology. A bronze metal with a high hardness and anti-wear properties is usually used for a high pressure cylinder and a pin-bush bearing. The new bronze metal in which is manufactured for this experimental study shows very high hardness of 192${\sim}$220 Hv compared with that of a conventional bronze metal of 120${\sim}$140 Hv. The high hardness of new bronze metals is strongly related to the radical reduction of wear volumes and an improved surface roughness of operated worn surfaces. As explained by previous many research works, the improved hardness of nonferrous metals may increase a load-carrying capacity and anti-wear properties of tribological components.

  • The rolling piston type rotary compressor has been widely used for refrigeration and air-conditioning systems due to its compactness and high-speed operation. The present study is one of studies to maximize the advantages of refrigerant compressors. In addition, because friction characteristics of the critical sliding component is essential in the design of refrigerant compressors, the present study also analyzed the lubrication characteristics of a rotary compressor used for refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. In order to measure the friction force between the vane and the rolling piston, an experimental apparatus known as the Pin-on-Disk was used. Load is applied by the hydraulic servo valve controlling the pressure of the hydraulic cylinder. The results showed that the rotational speed of the shaft, the operating temperature, and the discharge pressure significantly influenced the friction force between the vane and the rolling piston.

  • In order to reduce the oil consumption for a 2 stroke free piston hydrogen fueled engine, the behaviors of residual lubricant oil of the cylinder wall surface were visualized and oil mass emitted into exhaust port was measured by using research engine with cross-head and eccentric crankshaft. As the results, it was shown that characteristics of residual lubricant oil such as oil thickness and distribution were remarkably different from a conventional 4 stroke engine. It was also analyzed that these tendencies relied on the configuration and installed position of the exhaust port, piston pin boss and so on.

  • The friction/wear testing has been carried out for investigating the tribological characteristics between a conventional screw and tribotreated one. The tribotreated screw is manufactured by blasting a fine polymer power to the heat-treated surface of the conventional screw. The injection molding pressure that is developed between the screw and the cylinder has been applied to the rubbing surface on the specimen in a pin-on-disk wear tester. The measured results show that the friction coefficient and wear rate of a tribotreated screw are relatively low compared with the conventional one. This means that the tribotreated screw may be recommended for using an injection mold machine.

  • In this study, the instantaneous heat flux measurement probe and the linkage system for the measurement of the instantaneous temperature and heat flux of the DI mono cylinder diesel engine were developed, and these were proved to have a good reliability and sensibility. A 3-D FEM model which consist of full piston to accommodate the eccentric bowl in the piston head, was applied for the analysis of the thermal stress and the temperature distribution. The mean heat flux on the piston head was used as boundary condition for the analysis of piston. The analysis showed that thermal stress concentrate on the bowl and inner surface of pin hall.

  • To investigate and analyze the cause of the failure of the connecting rod bolt and the crank pin bearing bolt of the diesel engine of this study, the following results were obtained through site surveying, the investigation of literature referring to similar failures, testing and inspection of the fracture surface, and the experience of the researchers. The fractured crank pin bearing bolt of the diesel engine is estimated to be damaged later than the connecting rod bolt. From the shape of fracture surface, it is evident that the failed connecting rod bolt is fractured by fatigue failure due to abnormally repeated loads (e.g. loosening of the connecting bolt, etc.), and is not failed by brittle fractures due to the impact load. The surface of the U-nut on the fractured connecting rod bolt has been worsening due to the improper use of lubricant (agent for prevention of thread fixing) and no usage of separating the each connecting rod on each cylinder. Moreover, there is the possibility that those poor surface conditions of the fractured connecting rod bolt have affected the failure of the connecting rod bolt of the main engine. And it could be assumed that the mechanical characteristic and manufacturing process of the failed connecting rod bolt and crank pin bearing bolt, which were made by a domestic company, conform to the design requirements for those bolts.
