This study was performed to examine use of the pump-and-treat method for remediation of TCE, CF and CT in groundwater contaminated by DNAPL. The Woosan industrial complex is located in Wonju, about 120 km east of Seoul, Korea. Two pumping wells (KDPW7 and KDPW8) and five monitoring wells (KDMW7, KDMW8, KDMW9, KDMW10, and SKW2) were installed for the test. An asphalt laboratory is a main source of the extensive subsurface contamination at this site. To evaluate change in the concentrations of TCE, CF, and CT in groundwater in the study area, three rounds of pump-and-treat pilot tests were performed (6 July to 6 August, 22 August to 6 September, and 19 September to 2 December in 2011). The groundwater levels and the concentrations of TCE, CF, and CT exhibited negative correlations in the wet season but positive correlations in the dry season, which suggests that the TCE concentrations were mainly controlled by dilution through rainfall during the wet season and by residual TCE, CF, and CT in the unsaturated zone during the dry season. These possibilities should be considered in the full-scale remediation plan.

The methods for the minimization of fresh water consumption, waste water generation and water contamination have been greatly investigated and developed for last ten years. Recently, the rising cost of waste water treatment and the more strict environmental regulation lead to the higher demand of more efficient and systematic methods for process water management. The water reuse technology, which not only reduce the process water needs but also minimize waste water generation within the process, could be one of most efficient way for current demand. In this study, the practical way for reduction of water pollution and optimal reuse or recycle of process water in a newsprint mill was investigated by using a simulation model. The result of computer simulation showed that the COD level of approach system could be reduced by 50% after the stock concentration at the 2nd disc filter was increased upto 30%. The application of WRDF(Wrinkled Rotary Drum Filter) to the newsprint mill was carried out with pilot scale. The process water treated by WRDF had enough cleanliness to substitute the forming fabric shower water with the PDF water, which could result in the 30% reduction in fresh water consumption.

In order to obtain safe drinking water, free from surface contamination, a study to determine the potential for developing a bank-filtrate system in the Iryong and Yongsan, Nakdong River Basin, Korea was conducted. The main type of aquifer In the study area is alluvial, consisting mostly of sand and gravel. The hydraulic conductivity(k) of the Iryong and Yongsan test areas were 8.63${\times}$10$^-2$cm/s and 9.90${\times}$10$^-2$cm/s, respectively, indicating that these areas are satisfactory for bank filtrate production. Pilot plants(IRPL and YSPL) were set up In Iryong and Yongsan to monitor the change in the quality of bank-filtered water and to determine the effect pumping had on the surrounding hydrogeologic system. The pilot plants operated continuously for about two months and the data obtained were used to validate the groundwater flow model. Computer simulations were conducted to predict the effects of producing bank filtrate using MODFLOW. MODPATH was also linked with the flow model to analyze particle tracking. According to the results of the model simulations and the hydrogeologlc study, long-term pumping, the minimization of drawdown and the availability of uncontaminated sell and groundwater conditions for the catchment area were all Important factors for successful bank-titrate system development.
The remediation efficiency of the contaminant through laboratory experiment of the pilot scale was evaluated for the influence factors in the contaminated soils for the applicability of the prefabricated vertical drain system. It was performed numerical analysis by the method that the finite element and finite differences based on the drawn result about the remediation of contaminated soils. The parametric analysis for the applied parameter value was performed. In the pilot scale remediation experiment, as a result of evaluating with the minimum limit concentration ratio, in the case of dense and loose conditon, the remediation time was much longer. And the remediation efficiency was rapidly progressed as the time was elapsed. It was analyzed that the contaminant concentration is reduced around the extraction well as the contamination remediating rate by numerical analysis result as the time was elapsed.

In order to investigate stabilization effect and sustainability on As-contaminated farmland soils which were affected the abandoned mine site and stabilized by zerovalent iron(ZVI) and industrial by-products, batch-scale and pilot-scale tests were carried out. In batch tests, ZVI and industrial by-products(blast furnace slag, steel refining slag and oyster shell powder) were used in treatment materials to reduce the As leaching. Industrial by-products were mixed with As-contaminated soils, in the ratio of 1%, 3%, 5% and 7% on the weight base of dried soil. The results of batch-scale tests was shown that the reduction of As concentration was observed in all samples and it was expected that ZVI and steel refining slag were more effective than other treatment materials to stabilize As compounds. In pilot-scale tests, columns were filled with untreated soils and treated soils mixed with ZVI and steel refining slag in the same mixing ratio of 3%. Distilled water was discharged into the columns with the velocity of 0.3 pore volume/day. During the test, pH, EC, Eh and As concentration were measured in the regular term(1pore volume). after six months, pilot-scale tests were retested to investigate sustainability of treatment materials. As a result, It was shown that the leachate from control column was continuously released during the test period and its concentration was greater than $100ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$ which was exceeded the national regulation of water discharged to river or stream ($50ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$). On the other hand, soil treated with ZVI and steel refining slag showed that the concentrations of leachate were lower than national regulation of water discharged to river or stream. Therefore it was expected that ZVI and steel refining slag could be applied to the farmland site as the alternative treatment materials.
As a pilot experiment for developing the monitoring system for oil spill from storage tank, previous approach of monitoring contaminated oil from mixed soil sample had the limitation that it cannot reflect the real situations of the contamination. In this study, more realistic contamination condition and water contents were considered. Fluorescence intensity was not affected by water contents. To acquire the stability of media, sand, Ca-bentonite, alumina, Fe-oxide, bead and silica were tested. Only sand was suitable to our system. These results should provide basic information for constructing reliable monitoring system.

Pressurized MF membranes are used to remove suspended solid and colloidal materials of wastewater treatment plant effluent as the pretreatment of RO in reuse water production process. Membrane operation data and pollutants removal efficiency are investigated using 100 t/d scale pilot plant in J wastewater treatment plant located in Namyangju city. 40 LMH flux of pressurized MF membrane are obtained in various turbidity and temperature condition. Coagulation of dissolved organic enables flux improvement of MF from 40 LMH to 60 LMH. Pressure drop of 1st RO elements rapidly increased after long-term pause, which is because the complex contamination of organic matter and ionic substances of pluming systems.
To examine the effects of amendments on heavy mineral oil degradation, a pilot scale experiment was conducted for over 105days. During the experiment, soil samples were collected and analyzed periodically for the determination of residual hydrocarbon and microbial activities. At the end of the experiment, the initial level of contamination ($6,205{\pm}173mgkg^{-1}$) was reduced by $33{\sim}45%$ in the amendment amended soil; whereas only 8% of the hydrocarbon was eliminated in the non-amended soil. Heavy mineral oil degradation was much faster and more complete in compost amended soils. Enhanced dissipation of heavy mineral oil in compost amended soil might be derived from increased microbial activities (respiration, microbial biomass-C) and soil enzyme activity(lipase, dehydrogenase, and FDA hydrolase) were strongly correlated with heavy mineral oil biodegradaton (P < 0.01).

The original pilot-scale electrokinetic equipment suitable to soil contamination characteristics of Korean nuclear facility sites was manufactured for the remediation of soil contaminated with uranium. During the experiment with the original electrokinetic equipment, many metal oxides were generated and were stuck on the cathode plate. The uranium removal capability of the original electrokinrtic equipment was almost exhausted because the cathode plate covered with metal oxides did not conduct electricity in the original electrokinetic equipment. Therefore, the original electrokinetic equipment was improved. After the remediation experience for 25 days using the improved electrokinetic remediation equipment, the removal efficiency of uranium from the soil was 96.8% and its residual uranium concentration was 0.81 Bq/g. When the initial uranium concentration of soil was about 50 Bq/g, the electrokinetic remediation time required to remediate the uranium concentration below clearance concentration of 1.0 Bq/g was about 34 days. When the initial uranium concentration of soil was about 75 Bq/g, the electrokinetic remediation time required to remediate below 1.0 Bq/g was about 42 days. When the initial uranium concentration of soil was about 100 Bq/g, the electrokinetic remediation time required to remediate below 1.0 Bq/g was about 49 days.
Remediation of crude oil contaminated soil is complicate and hard to apply traditional methods because of its persistency, durability, and high viscosity. Therefore, in this study, the efficiency of crude oil contaminated soil remediation was tested by developing a pilot-scale thermal desorption system using the indirect heating method with an exhaust gas treatment. Under optimal condition drawed by temperature and retention time, the remedial efficiency of crude oil contaminated soil and treatability of exhaust gas were analyzed. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration of crude oil contaminated soil was decreased to 69.7 mg/kg on average and the remedial efficiency was measured at 99.60%. Through the exhaust gas, 86.0% of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) was degraded and 97.16% of complex malodor was reduced under the suggested optimum operation condition. This study provides important basic data to be useful in scaling up of the indirect thermal desorption system for the remediation of crude oil contaminated soil.
