In this study, the load carrying behavior of piled rafts installed in inclined bearing rock layer was investigated for rock-mounted and -socketed conditions. It was found that settlements induced for an inclined bearing rock layer are larger than for a horizontal layer condition. The load capacity of piled rafts for the rock-mounted condition decreased as rock-layer inclination angle (${\theta}$) increased, while vice versa for the rock-socketed condition. The load capacities of raft and piles both decreased with increasing ${\theta}$ for the rock-mounted condition. When bearing rock layer was inclined, loads carried by uphill-side piles were greater than those by downhill-side piles. The values of differential settlements of rock-mounted and -socketed conditions were not significantly different whereas slightly higher for the rock-socketed condition. The values of load sharing ratio (${\alpha}_p$) and its variation with settlement were not markedly changed by the inclination of bedrock. It was shown that ${\alpha}_p$ for piled rafts installed in rock layer was not affected by ${\theta}$ whereas actual loads carried by raft and piles may vary depending on the pile installation and rock-layer inclination conditions.
The piled raft foundations are subjected to lateral loading under the action of wind and earthquake loads. Their bearing behavior and flexural responses under these loadings are of prime concern for researchers and practitioners. The insufficient experimental studies on piled rafts subjected to lateral loading lead to a limited understanding of this foundation system. Lateral load sharing between pile and raft in a laterally loaded piled raft is scarce in literature. In the present study, lateral load-displacement, load sharing, bending moment distribution, and raft inclinations of the piled raft foundations have been discussed through an instrumented scaled down model test in 1 g condition. The contribution of raft in a laterally loaded piled raft has been evaluated from the responses of pile group and piled raft foundations attributing a variety of influential system parameters such as pile spacing, slenderness ratio, group area ratio, and raft embedment. The study shows that the raft contributes 28-49% to the overall lateral capacity of the piled raft foundation. The results show that the front pile experiences 20-66% higher bending moments in comparison to the back pile under different conditions in the pile group and piled raft. The piles in the piled raft exhibit lower bending moments in the range of 45-50% as compared to piles in the pile group. The raft inclination in the piled raft is 30-70% less as compared to the pile group foundation. The lateral load-displacement and bending moment distribution in piles of the single pile, pile group, and piled raft has been presented to compare their bearing behavior and flexural responses subjected to lateral loading conditions. This study provides substantial technical aid for the understanding of piled rafts in onshore and offshore structures to withstand lateral loadings, such as those induced by wind and earthquake loads.

In this study, FDM modelling with axisymmetry condition and interface element was verified whether it is reasonable to estimate compositive behavior of a piled raft foundation. To this end, the modelling validity of piled raft foundations was estimated by comparing and analyzing numerical analysis results and laboratory model test results. Also, load bearing ratio of a raft is analyzed by performing sensitivity analysis of foundation parameters with the actual field conditions. As a result of this study, correlation between bearing capacity and vertical displacement of numerical results turned out to be similar with that of a laboratory model test. In addition, ultimate bearing capacity of piled rafts and load bearing ratio of the raft is calculated to be similar in both cases. The load bearing ratio of the raft was also estimated to be in the range of 33% to 52% from the sensitivity analysis. The results were confirmed to be similar to the previous studies. Therefore, it can be inferred that piled rafts can be effectively modelled applying axisymmetry condition and interface element.

The present research presents experimental and finite element studies to investigate the behavior of piled raft-tunnel system in a sandy soil. In the experimental work, a small scale model was tested in a sand box with load applied vertically to the raft through a hydraulic jack. Five configurations of piles were tested in the laboratory. The effects of pile length (L), number of piles in the group and the clearance distance between pile tip and top of tunnel surface (H) on the load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel system are investigated. The load sharing percent between piles and rafts are included in the load-settlement presentation. The experimental work on piled raft-tunnel system yielded that all piles in the group carry the same fraction of load. The load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel model was increased with increasing (L) for variable (H) distances and decreased with increasing (H) for constant pile lengths. The total load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel model decreases with decreasing number of piles in the group. The total load carrying capacity of the piles relative to the total applied load (piles share) increases with increasing (L) and the number of piles in the group. The increase in (L/H) ratio for variable (H) distance and number of piles leads to an increase in piles share. ANSYS finite element program is used to model and analyze the piled raft-tunnel system. A three dimensional analysis with elastoplastic soil model is carried out. The obtained results revealed that the finite element method and the experimental modeling are rationally agreed.
The design of Piled Raft foundations considering the load sharing between raft and piles provides a more economical solution than the conventional design approach based on bearing capacity of piles only. Generally, numerical methods are used to analyze the behavior of Piled Rafts due to its complexity and load sharing ratio is also estimated by numerical methods about some limited cases under specific load level and soil conditions. In this study, a method to estimate the load sharing between the raft and piles was developed which is based on load-settlement characteristics of foundation elements. Normalized load-settlement curves of the raft and pile groups were derived individually, and the relationship between load sharing ratio and foundation settlement was proposed by using these curves. For each load-settlement curves, hyperbolic type was adopted in order to describe the non-linear behavior of foundations. Centrifuge test results were compared with the results from proposed method, and the trends of variation of load sharing ratio with settlement presented from both were similar.
In the design for piled rafts, the load capacity of the raft is in general ignored and the load capacities of pile are only considered for the estimation of the total load carrying capacity of the piled raft. The axial resistance of piled raft is offered by the raft and group piles acting on the same supporting ground soils. As a consequence, pile - soil - raft and pile - soil interactions, occurring by stress and displacement duplication with pile and raft loading conditions, acts as a key element in the design for piled rafts. In this study, a series of centrifuge model tests has been performed to compare the axial behavior of group pile and raft with that of a piled raft (having 16 component piles with an array of $4{\times}4$) at the stiff and soft clays. From the test results, it is observed that the interactions of piles, soil, and raft has little influences on the load capacities of piles and raft in piled rafts compared with the load capacities of group piles and raft at the same clay soil condition.

There are several types of foundations for light-weight structures, such as low story buildings, on soft clay deposits. Those foundations, such as piled raft, compensated foundation, mat foundation, floating foundation are commonly used rather then end-bearing piles to get more benefits on the construction and cost savings. In this study, settlement behaviors are computed and compared for several types of foundations on soft clay deposits. Also, theoretical expressions of parameters for piled raft system were provided with co-relations for design purposes. The predictions of settlements of piled rafts foundation are proposed based on the pile dimensions and design loads. From this study, the piled raft foundations is more benefits for reducing the settlement of clay deposits, and it is found that the piled raft system is applicable and effective on thick clay deposits, and that differential settlements of the foundation should be managed by designing the configuration of pile lengths.

Piled raft foundations are usually used to reduce total and differential settlements of superstructures. In the piled raft foundations, the raft is often on its own able to provide adequate bearing capacity and only few widely spaced piles are added to the foundation to keep settlements be1ow a certain limit. In this paper, experimental studies on the load sharing ratio between piles and raft are carried out. Also, for evaluating the application of optimum design technique using a genetic algorithm, optimal locations of files are compared with the results of laboratory model tests. from tile results of laboratory model tests, there are found that the load sharing ratio between files and raft is depended on the number of piles and stiffness of raft, and the optimal locations of piles became concentrated on the middle of rafts. From these results of laboratory model tests, the optimum technique using a genetic algorithm is acknowledged to the application in the piled raft.
The piled raft is a geotechnical construction, consisting of the three elements-piles, raft and the soil, that is applied for the foundation of a tall buildings in an increasing number. The piled rafts nowadays are preferred as the foundation to reduce the overall and differential settlements; and also, provides an economical foundation option for circumstances where the performance of the raft alone does not satisfy the design requirements. The finite element analysis of the piled raft foundation is presented in this paper. The numerical procedure is programmed into finite element based software SAFE in order to conduct the parametric study wherein soil modulus and raft thickness is varied for constant pile diameter. The problems of piled raft for three different load patterns as considered in the available literature (Sawant et al. 2012) are analyzed here using SAFE. The results obtained for load pattern-I using SAFE are compared with those obtained by Sawant et al. (2012). The fair agreement is observed in the results which demonstrate the accuracy of the procedure employed in the present investigation. Further, substantial reduction in maximum deflections and moments are found in piled raft as compared to that in raft. The reduction in deflections is observed with increase in raft thickness and soil modulus. The decrease in maximum moments with increase in soil modulus is seen in raft whereas increase in maximum moments is seen in piled raft. The raft thickness and soil modulus affects the response of the type of the foundation considered in the present investigation.
Ground subsidence, which is a current concern that affects piled raft foundations, has occurred at a high rate in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, due primarily to groundwater pumping for water supply. In this study, the groundwater level (GWL) change affect on a piled raft foundation was investigated based on the three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM) using the PLAXIS 3D software. The GWL change due to global groundwater pumping and dewatering were simulated in PLAXIS 3D based on the GWL reduction and consolidation. Settlement and the pile axial force of the piled raft foundation in Ho Chi Minh subsoil were investigated based on the actual design and the proposed optimal case. The actual design used the piled foundation concept, while the optimal case applied a pile spacing of 6D using a piled raft concept to reduce the number of piles, with little increased settlement. The results indicated that the settlement increased with the GWL reduction, caused by groundwater pumping and dewatering. The subsidence started to affect the piled raft foundation 2.5 years after construction for the actual design and after 3.4 years for the optimal case due to global groundwater pumping. The pile's axial force, which was affected by negative skin friction, increased during that time.
