We develop a method to fabricate a flexible thin film audio systems using polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF). The system we designed showed the properties of increased flexibility, transparency, and sound pressure levels. As an input port of two terminals, transparent oxide thin film with a low resistivity is adopted. In order to provide dielectric insulation, a transparent insulating oxide thin film is coated to obtain double-layered structure. In the range of visible light, the output from the output of the system showed a increased and improved sound pressure level. The piezoelectric polymer film of PVDF is used to produce mechanical vibration due to the applied electrical voltage signal. An analog electric voltage signal is transformed into sound waves in the audio system.

This paper proposes an identification method for modes of a thin plate where multiple actuators and sensors are bonded. When a natural frequency of a mode is decoupled from all other natural frequencies, the mode can be identified separatedly with a bandpass filter. Since a thin plate has resonant peaks at natural frequencies, the bandpass filter can be designed to extract the signal of the mode to be identified. Parameters of the second order linear differential equation of the mode can be obtained to apply the Least square method to the extract the modal signal. The proposed identification method is applied to an all-clamped plate with two pairs of piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The outputs of the identified model match with the experimental data well.
In this paper, we proposed a novel method for automatic detection for snoring and heart beat using a single piezoelectric sensor. For this study multi-rate signal processing technique was applied to detect snoring and heart beat from the single source signal. The sound event duration and intensity features were used to snore detection and heart beat was found by autocorrelation. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated on clinical database, which is the nocturnal piezoelectric snoring data of 30 patients that suffered obstructive sleep apnea. The method achieved sensitivity of 88.6%, specificity of 96.1% with accuracy of 95.6% for snoring and sensitivity of 94.1% and positive predictive value of 87.6% for heart beat, respectively. These results suggest that the proposed method can be a useful tool in sleep monitoring and sleep disordered breathing diagnosis.
A quantitative prediction method for initial crack length in a carbon/epoxy (CF/EP) composite beam using active piezoelectric transducers was established in this study. Wavelet Transform (WT)-based signal processing and identification technique in time-frequency domain was developed to facilitate the determination of damage presence and severity. Dynamic response of a CF/EP composites beam containing a continuously expanding crack, coupled with a pair of active piezoelectric disks, was examined under a narrow band excitation, and then applied with the proposed signal processing technique.

A cold cathode flourescent lamp for the backlight in the notebook computer requires high input voltage about 1300(V) when it turns on. But once a discharge starts, the input voltage can be dropped by about one-third for continued output. The equivalent impedance also varies from open to several dozens of kilo-ohms. The piezoelectric transformer converts electrical energy into mechanical energy and then converts it back to electrical energy at a high voltage. Its high output voltage, high efficiency and small size are suitable for driving the LCD backlight in the notebook computer. The piezoelectric transformer operates near the resonance frequency and the output waveform is close to sine wave with very little noise. This paper suggests an inverter for LCD backlight of notebook computer using piezoelectric transformer that includes voltage to frequency converter for gate signal which is useful for tracking of variable resonance frequency depending on load impedance.

This paper presents a novel approach for Lamb wave based structural health monitoring(SHM) in honeycomb aluminum panels. In this study, a suite of three signal processing algorithms are employed to improve the damage detection capability. The signal processing algorithms used include wavelet attenuation, correlation coefficients of power density spectra, and triangulation of reflected waves. Piezoelectric transducers are utilized as both sensors and actuators for Lamb wave propagation. These SHM algorithms are built into a MatLab interface that integrates and automates the hardware and software operations and displays the results for each algorithm to the analyst for side by side comparison. The effectiveness of each of these signal processing algorithms for SHM in honeycomb aluminum panels under a variety of damage conditions is then demonstrated.
The signal-based acoustic emission (AE) characterization of concrete fracture process utilizing home-programmed AE monitoring system was performed for three kinds of static loading tests (Cubic-splitting, Direct-shear and Pull-out). Each test was carried out to induce a distinct fracture mode of concrete. Apart from monitoring and recording the corresponding fracture process of concrete, various methods were utilized to distinguish the characteristics of detected AE waveform to interpret the information of fracture behavior of AE sources (i.e. micro-cracks of concrete). Further, more signal-based characters of AE in different stages were analyzed and compared in this study. This research focused on the relationship between AE signal characteristics and fracture processes of concrete. Thereafter, the mode of concrete fracture could be represented in terms of AE signal characteristics. By using cement-based piezoelectric composite sensors, the AE signals could be detected and collected with better sensitivity and minimized waveform distortion, which made the characterization of AE during concrete fracture process feasible. The continuous wavelet analysis technique was employed to analyze the wave-front of AE and figure out the frequency region of the P-wave & S-wave. Defined RA (rising amplitude), AF (average frequency) and P-wave & S-wave importance index were also introduced to study the characters of AE from concrete fracture. It was found that the characters of AE signals detected during monitoring could be used as an indication of the cracking behavior of concrete.

In this research, a wafar-level transfer method of cantilever array on a conventional CMOS circuit has been developed for high density probe-based data storage. The transferred cantilevers were silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) cantilevers integrated with poly silicon heaters and piezoelectric sensors, called thermo-piezoelectric $Si_3N_4$ cantilevers. In this process, we did not use a SOI wafer but a conventional p-type wafer for the fabrication of the thermo-piezoelectric $Si_3N_4$ cantilever arrays. Furthermore, we have developed a very simple transfer process, requiring only one step of cantilever transfer process for the integration of the CMOS wafer and cantilevers. Using this process, we have fabricated a single thermo-piezoelectric $Si_3N_4$ cantilever, and recorded 65nm data bits on a PMMA film and confirmed a charge signal at 5nm of cantilever deflection. And we have successfully applied this method to transfer 34 by 34 thermo-piezoelectric $Si_3N_4$ cantilever arrays on a CMOS wafer. We obtained reading signals from one of the cantilevers.
There is a great demand of micro-actuators for mobile information devices such as SFF optical drives and mobile camera phones. However, conventional magnetic coils of electromagnetic motors are a major obstacle for miniaturization because of their complicated structures and large power consumption. In this paper, a linear ultrasonic motor to actuate focusing lens of mobile devices is proposed. The new actuator uses a ring type bimorph piezoelectric material, and $d_{31}$ mode is adopted for applying linear motion. The interaction between inertia force and friction force makes linear motion by high-frequency saw signal input. The saw signal gives steady forces on the one direction by asymmetric inclination property of the signal itself on time domain. A commercial FEM (ANSYS) was used in this investigation for simulating structural analysis, identification of dynamic property, such as resultant displacement and coupled analysis with piezoelectric material. To evaluate the performance of the new design, a prototype was manufactured and experiments were carried out. Experimental results show the actuator motion of 1.52 mm/s at 10 kHz input signal in 5 V.
