  • The bistable thin cylindrical shell is developable structure with the ability to transition between its two stable configurations. This structure offers significant potential applications due to its excellent deformability. In this paper, the composite thin cylindrical shell consisting of the composite layer and the piezoelectric layer was investigated. The material and geometric parameters of the shell were found to influence its stable characteristics. The analysis model of the composite thin cylindrical shell incorporating the piezoelectric layer was developed, and the expressions for its strain energy were derived. By applying the minimum energy principle, the impact of the electric field intensity on the bi-stable behaviors of the cylindrical shell was analyzed. The results showed that the shell exhibited the bistability only under the appropriate electric field strength. And the accuracy of the theoretical prediction was verified by simulation experiments. This study provides an important reference for the application of deployable structures.

  • This study investigates the free and forced vibration characteristics of an annular piezoelectric motor stator constructed of two piezoelectric material layers and one stainless steel layer. The annular piezoelectric motor stator is subjected to a travelling load produced by piezo drive electrical voltage input to the two piezoelectric layers. The stator is modeled as an annular laminated plate based on the classical plate theory and the governing equations are derived via Hamilton's variational principle. Variation of the free vibration characteristics as a function of several design parameters has been studied and based on this result, the forced vibration responses to the input electricity of various frequencies and magnitudes are investigated. The obtained results will provide an important criterion, a priori, in the design of piezoelectric motors.

  • Based on the Kirchhoff hypothesis of normal-remain-normal, the present work analyses piezoelectric laminated plates, wherein poled piezoelectric laminae are transversely isotropic and function as actuators. A quadric electric field is induced inside a piezoelectric lamina under a given applied voltage and mechanical bending. The governing equations for the piezoelectric laminated plate derived from the principle of virtual work in terms of the electric enthalpy have the same forms as those for a conventional composite laminated plate. We use rectangular sandwich plates of Al/PZT/Al and PZT/Al/PZT with four simply supported edges to demonstrate the prediction of the maximum bending stress in the PZT layer. The analytic solutions are verified by three-dimensional finite element analysis.

  • This paper is concerned with thermo-mechanical vibration behavior of flexoelectric/piezoelectric nanobeams under uniform and linear temperature distributions. Flexoelectric/piezoelectric nanobeams have higher natural frequencies compared to conventional piezoelectric ones, especially at lower thicknesses. Both nonlocal and surface effects are considered in the analysis of flexoelectric/piezoelectric nanobeams for the first time. Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the governing equations and the related boundary conditions which are solved applying a Galerkin-based solution. Comparison study is also performed to verify the present formulation with those of previous data. Numerical results are presented to investigate the influences of the flexoelectricity, nonlocal parameter, surface elasticity, temperature rise, beam thickness and various boundary conditions on the vibration frequencies of thermally affected flexoelectric/piezoelectric nanobeam.

  • In this study, a new smart beam finite element is proposed for the finite element modeling of the beam-type smart structure with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Constitutive equations far the direct piezoelectric effect and converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials are considered. By using the variational principle, the equations of motion for the smart beam finite element are derived. The presented 2-node beam finite element is isoparametric element based on Timoshenko beam theory. The validity of the proposed beam element is shown through comparing the analysis results of the verification examples with those of other previous researches. Therefore, by analyzing smart structures with smart beam finite elements, it is possible to simulate the control of the structural behavior by piezoelectric actuators with applied voltages and the monitoring of the structure behavior by piezoelectric sensors with sensed voltages.

  • A decoupled thermo-~lezoelectric-mechanical model of composite laminates with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators, subjected to externally applied load, temperature change load, electric field load is developed. The governing differential equations are obtained by applying the principle of free energy and variational techniques. A higher order zigzag theory displacement field is employed to accurately capture the transverse shear and normal effects in laminated composite plates of arbitrary thickness.

  • In this study, a new smart beam finite element is proposed for the finite element modeling of beam-type smart structures that are equipped with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Constitutive equations for the direct piezoelectric effect and converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials are considered in the formulation. By using a variational principle, the equations of motion for the smart beam finite element are derived. The proposed 2-node beam finite element is an isoparametric element based on Timoshenko beam theory. The proposed smart beam finite element is applied to the free vibration control adopting a constant gain feedback scheme. The electrical force vector, which is obtained in deriving an equation of motion, is the control force equivalent to that in existing literature. Validity of the proposed element is shown through comparing the analytical results of the verification examples with those of other previous researchers. With the use of smart beam finite elements, simulation of free vibration control is demonstrated by sensing the voltage of the piezoelectric sensors and by applying the voltages to the piezoelectric actuators.

  • Dynamic responses of porous piezoelectric and metal foam nano-size plates have been examined via a four variables plate formulation. Diverse pore dispersions named uniform, symmetric and asymmetric have been selected. The piezoelectric nano-size plate is subjected to an external electrical voltage. Nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) which includes two scale factors has been utilized to provide size-dependent model of foam nanoplate. The presented plate formulation verifies the shear deformations impacts and it gives fewer number of field components compared to first-order plate model. Hamilton's principle has been utilized for deriving the governing equations. Achieved results by differential quadrature (DQ) method have been verified with those reported in previous studies. The influences of nonlocal factor, strain gradients, electrical voltage, dynamical load frequency and pore type on forced responses of metal and piezoelectric foam nano-size plates have been researched.

  • Design of a piezoelectric actuator for the ultrasonic motor must ensure that contact point has elliptic trajectory of movement. The new idea of an elliptic trajectory formation of the piezoelectric actuator is investigated in the paper. Shaking beam for the piezoelectric linear ultrasonic motor was introduced to realize this new idea. The principle is based on the excitation of longitudinal and flexural vibrations of the actuator by using two sources of longitudinal mechanical vibrations shifted by $\pi$/2. Mode-frequency and harmonic response analyses of the actuator based on FEM have been carried out. The moving trajectory of the contact point has been defined. Finally, The experimental research of shaking beam has been confirmed an opportunity of the elliptic trajectory reception with the help of one stable mode of the vibrations.

  • In this research, the size-dependent impact of an embedded piezoelectric nanoplate subjected to in-plane loading on free vibration characteristic is studied. The foundation is two-parameter viscoelastic. The nonlocal elasticity is employed in order to capture the influence of size of the plate. By utilizing Hamilton's principle as well as the first- order shear deformation theory, the governing equation and boundary conditions are achieved. Then, using Navier method the equations associated with the free vibration of a plate constructed piezoelectric material under in-plane loads are solved analytically. The presented formulation and solution procedure are validated using other papers. Also, the impacts of nonlocal parameter, mode number, constant of spring, electric potential, and geometry of the nanoplate on the vibrational frequency are examined. As this paper is the first research in which the vibration associated with piezoelectric nanoplate on the basis of FSDT and nonlocal elasticity is investigated analytically, this results can be used in future investigation in this area.
