The authors fabricated ultrasonic transducer with PVDF[poly(vinylidene fluoride)] piezoelectric polymer film. When impulse waves were applied to the PVDF ultrasonic transducer, the dependence of the response properties on the backing material with copper was investigated through not only theoretical calculations using Mason's equivalent circuit but also experimental measurements. The experimental pulse response properties agree with those of the theoretical calculations and the pulses were shorter than those for a PZT transducer. If such short-pulse properties are used in an medical ultrasonic image diagnosis apparatus, the resolution of the apparatus will be improved. When the insertion loss was calculated theoretically to the PVDF ultrasonic transducer, the frequency characteristics of its showed wideband frequency.

Scour is one of the leading causes of overwater bridge failures worldwide. While monitoring systems have already been implemented or are still being developed, they suffer from limitations such as high costs, inaccuracies, and low reliability, among others. Also, most sensors only measure scour depth at one location and near the pier. Thus, the objective is to design a simple, low cost, scour hole topography monitoring system that could better characterize the entire depth, shape, and size of bridge scour holes. The design is based on burying a robust, waterproofed, piezoelectric sensor strip in the streambed. When scour erodes sediments to expose the sensor, flowing water excites it to cause the generation of time-varying voltage signals. An algorithm then takes the time-domain data and maps it to the frequency-domain for identifying the sensor's resonant frequency, which is used for calculating the exposed sensor length or scour depth. Here, three different sets of tests were conducted to validate this new technique. First, a single sensor was tested in ambient air, and its exposed length was varied. Upon verifying the sensing concept, a waterproofed prototype was buried in soil and tested in a tank filled with water. Sensor performance was characterized as soil was manually eroded away, which simulated various scour depths. The results confirmed that sensor resonant frequencies decreased with increasing scour depths. Finally, a network of 11 sensors was configured to form a distributed monitoring system in the lab. Their exposed lengths were adjusted to simulate scour hole formation and evolution. Results showed promise that the proposed sensing system could be scaled up and used for bridge scour topography monitoring.
As the aged population grows around the world, many medical instruments and devices have been developed recently. Among the devices, a drug delivery stent is a medical device which requires precision machining. Conventional drug delivery stent has problems of residual polymer and decoating because the drug is coated on the surface of stent with the polymer. If the drug is impregnated in micro hole array on the surface of the stent, the problem can be solved. Micro sized holes are generally fabricated by laser machining; however, the fabricated holes do not have an enough aspect ratio to contain the drug or a good surface finish to deliver it to blood vessel tissue. To overcome these problems, we propose a vibration-assisted machining mechanism with PZT (Piezoelectric Transducers) for the fabrication of micro sized holes. If the mechanism vibrates the eyepiece of the laser machining head, the laser spot on the workpiece will vibrate vertically because objective lens in the eyepiece shakes by the mechanism's vibration. According to the former researches, the vibrating frequency over 20kHz and amplitude over 500nm are preferable. The vibration mechanism has cylindrical guide, hollowed PZT and supports. In the cylinder, the eyepiece is mounted. The cylindrical guide has upper and low plates and side wall. The shape of plates and side wall are designed to have high resonating frequency and large amplitude of motion. The PZT also is selected to have high actuating force and high speed of motion. The support has symmetrical and rigid characteristics.
Phase transition in ferroelectric polymer is very interesting behavior and has been widely studied for real device applications, such as actuators and sensors. Through the phase transition, there is structural change resulting in the change of electrical and optical properties. In this study, we fabricated the Febry-Perot interferometer with the thin film of ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) 50/50 mol% copolymer, and thermo-optical properties were investigated. The effective thermo-optical coefficient of P(VDF-TrFE) was obtained as $2.3{\sim}3.8{\times}10^{-4}/K$ in the ferroelectric temperature region ($45^{\circ}C{\sim}65^{\circ}C$) and $6.0{\times}10^{-4}/K$ in the phase transition temperature region ($65^{\circ}C{\sim}85^{\circ}C$), which is a larger than optical silica-fiber and PMMA. The resonance transmission peak of P(VDF-TrFE) with the variation of temperature showed hysteretic variation and the phase transition temperature of the polymer in heating condition was higher than in the cooling condition. The elimination of the hysteretic phase transition of P(VDF-TrFE) is necessary for practical applications of optical devices.
An important signal processing problem in PVDF sensor is the restoration of surface information from electric sensing signals. The objectives of this research are to design a new texture sensing system and to develop a new signal processing algorithm for signals from the sensor to be tangibly displayed by tangible interface systems. The texture sensing system is designed to get surface information with high resolution and dynamic range. First, a PVDF sensor is made of piezoelectric polymer (polyvinylidene fluoride) strips molded in a silicon rubber and attached in a rigid cylinder body. The sensor is mounted to a scanning system for dynamic sensing. Secondly, a new signal processing algorithm is developed to restore surface information. The algorithm consists of the two-dimensional modeling of the sensor using an identification method and inverse filtering from sensing signals into estimated surface information. Finally the two-dimensional surface information can be experimentally reconstructed from sensing signals using the developed signal processing algorithm.
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has drawn much attention due to its many advantages. PVDF shows high mechanical strength and flexibility, thermal stability, and good piezoelectricity enabling its application to various fields such as sensors, actuators, and energy transducers. Further studies have been conducted on PVDF in the form of thin films. The thin films exhibit different ionic conductivity according to the number of pores within the film, letting these films to be applied as electrolytes or separators of batteries. Porous PVDF membranes are also easily processed, usually made by using electrospinning. However, a large portion of researches were conducted using PVDF membranes produced by far field electrospinning, which is not a well-controlled experimental method. In this paper, we use near field electrospinning (NFES) process for more controlled, small-scaled, mesh type PVDF structures of nano to micro fibers fabricated by controlling process parameters and investigate the properties of such membranous structures. These membranes vary according to geometrical shape, pore density, and fiber thickness. We then measured the mechanical strength and piezoelectric characteristic of the structures. With various geometries in the fiber structures and various scales in the fibers, these types of structures can potentially lead to broader applications for stretchable electronics and dielectric electro active polymers.
In this paper, we present the finger tip tactile sensor which can detect contact normal force as well as slip. The developed sensor is made of two different materials, such as polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) that is known as piezoelectric polymer and pressure variable resistor ink. In order to detect slip to surface of object, a PVDF strip is arranged along the normal direction in the robot finger tip and the thumb tip. The surface electrode of the PVDF strip is fabricated using silk-screening technique with silver paste. Also a thin flexible force sensor is fabricated in the form of a matrix using pressure variable resistor ink in order to sense the static force. The developed tactile sensor is physically flexible and it can be deformed three-dimensionally to any shape so that it can be placed on anywhere on the curved surface. In addition, we developed a tactile sensing system by miniaturizing the charge amplifier, in order to amplify the small signal from the sensor, and the fast signal processing unit. The sensor system is evaluated experimentally and its effectiveness is validated.
Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) is most used in piezoelectric polymer industry. Electrode effect on the electrical properties of PVDF has been investigated. al has been used due to fair adhesion for PVDF. Work function of metal plays an important role on the electrical properties of ferroelectrics for top and /or bottom electrode. However, Al has much lower work function than Pt or Au and so leakage current of Al/PVDF/Al may be large. Pt or Au has not been used for electrode of PVDF system due to poor adhesion. PVDF irradiated by Ar+ ion beam with O2 environment takes good adhesion to inert metal. Contact angle of PVDF to triple distilled water was reduced from 75$^{\circ}$ to 31$^{\circ}$ at 1$\times$1015 Ar+/cm2. Working pressure was 2.3$\times$10-4 Torr and base pressure was 5$\times$10-6 Torr. Pt was deposited by ion beam sputtering and thickness of pt film was about 1000$\AA$. in previous study, enhancing adhesion of Pt on PVDF was shown. in this study, effect of electrode on PVDF will be represented.
