  • Using piezoelectric elements to harvest energy from ambient vibrations has been of great interest over the past few years. Due to the relatively low power output of piezoelectric materials, there are many study to improve the energy harvesting efficiencies. This paper is study the efficiencies of the output energy considering the cantilever piezoelectric bimorph using aluminum vibration beam. when the length of vibration beam and the piezoelectric body becomes same and the maximum output power comes out. DC voltage was increased as the beam thickness and vibration frequency was increased. The vibration beam was able to achieve very large energy value.

  • A bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester is developed for harvesting energy under the vortex induced vibration and it is integrated to a host structure of a trapezoidal plate without changing its passive dynamic properties. It is aimed to select trapezoidal plate as similar to a vertical fin-like structure which could be a part of an air vehicle. The designed energy harvester consists of an aluminum beam and two identical multi fiber composite (MFC) piezoelectric patches. In order to understand the dynamic characteristic of the trapezoidal plate, finite element analysis is performed and it is validated through an experimental study. The bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester is then integrated to the trapezoidal plate at the most convenient location with minimal structural displacement. The finite element model is constructed for the new combined structure in ANSYS Workbench 14.0 and the analyses performed on this particular model are then validated via experimental techniques. Finally, the energy harvesting performance of the bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester attached to the trapezoidal plate is also investigated through wind tunnel tests under the air load and the obtained results indicate that the system is a viable one for harvesting reasonable amount of energy.

  • This paper presents the feasibility of the piezoelectric shunt damping for vibration suppression of the highly rotating HDD disk-spindle system. A target vibration mode which restricts the recording density increment of the drive is determined by modal analysis of the drive, and a piezoelectric bimorph is designed to suppress the vibration level of the target mode. After deriving the generalized two-dimensional electromechanical coupling coefficient of the shunted spindle-disk system, the damping performance of the system is predicted by simulating the displacement transmissibility on the target mode. After manufacturing the proposed drive, the vibration suppression performance of the proposed methodology is experimentally evaluated in frequency domain.

  • Linear ultrasonic motor by bimorph. Transducer for linear ultrasonic motor with symmetric and anti-symmetric modes was studied. The transducer was composed of two piezoelectric ceramic that cross at right angles with each other at tip. In order to exist length vibration mode two piezoelectric ceramics must have 90-degree phase difference with each other. As a result, tip of transducer moves in elliptical motion. Elliptical trajectory of transducer was analyzed by employing the (mite element method(FEM). From the result, the linear ultrasonic motor was measured for characteristics. In this paper, vibration shape of transducer was simulated and the resonant frequency, stabilization frequency and maximum displacement were calculated using the FEA.

  • This work presents the feasibility of shunt damping far vibration suppression of the rotating HDD disk-spindle system using piezoelectric bimorph. A target vibration mode which significantly restricts the recording density increment of the drive is determined through modal analysis and a piezoelectric bimorph is designed to suppress unwanted vibration. After deriving the two-dimensional generalized electromechanical coupling coefficient of the shunted drive, the shunt damping of the system is predicted by simulating the displacement transmissibility using the coefficient. In addition, optimal design process using sensitivity analysis is undertaken in order to improve the shunt damping of the system. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is verified through experimental implementation by observing the vibration characteristics of the rotating disk-spindle system in frequency domain.

  • This paper analyzes three cantilever-types of piezoelectric actuators of bimorph, unimorph and monomorph in same volume to maximize tip displacement. Tip displacement of each actuator is theoretically derived by using beam theory and numerically verified by FEM. It also investigates the tip displacements of each actuator due to the change of elastic layer. It shows that the piezoelectric actuator of bimorph generates the largest tip displacement among them.

  • Wireless sensor network is one of prospective methods for railway monitoring due to the long-term operation and low-maintenance performances. How to supply power to the wireless sensor nodes has drawn much attention recently. In railway monitoring, the idea of converting ambient vibration energy from vibration of railway track induced by passing trains to electric energy has made it a potential way for powering the wireless sensor nodes. In this paper, a bimorph cantilever piezoelectric energy harvester was designed based on a single degree-of-freedom model. Experimental test was also performed to validate the design. The first natural frequency of the bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester was decreased from 117.1 Hz to 65.2 Hz by adding 4 gram tip mass to the free end of the 8.6 gram energy harvester. In addition, the power generation of the piezoelectric energy harvester with 4 gram tip mass at resonant frequency was increased from 0.14 mW to 0.74 mW from $2.06m/s^2$ base excitation compared to stand-alone piezoelectric energy harvester without tip mass.

  • In this study, lead-free $(Ba_{0.85}Ca_{0.15})(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)O_3$ ceramics and a bimorph-type piezoelectric actuator were fabricated using the normal oxide-mixed sintering method, and their dielectric properties, microstructure, and displacement properties were investigated. From the results of X-ray diffraction, the pattern of the specimen has a pure perovskite structure. In addition, no secondary impurity phases were found. The excellent piezoelectric coefficient of $d_{33}=454pC/N$, the electromechanical coupling factor $k_p=0.51$, the dielectric constant ${\varepsilon}_r=3,657$, the mechanical quality factor $Q_m=239$, and $T_c$(Tetragonal-Cubic) =$90^{\circ}C$ were shown at x= 0.085. ${\Delta}k_p/k_p20^{\circ}C$ and ${\Delta}f_r/f_r20^{\circ}C$ showed the maximum value of -0.255 and 0.111 at $-20^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. The maximum total-displacement was $60{\mu}m$ under the input voltage of 50 V. As a result, it is considered that lead-free $(Ba_{0.85}Ca_{0.15})(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)O_3$ ceramics is a promising candidate for piezoelectric actuator application for x= 0.085.

  • This article presents a numerical analysis to investigate the natural frequencies and harmonic response of a perforated cantilever beam attached to two layers of piezoelectric materials by using the finite element method for the first time. The bimorph piezoelectric is composed of 3 layers; two of them at the outer are piezoelectric, and the inner isotropic material. A higher order 3-D 20-node solid element that exhibits quadratic displacement behavior is exploited to discretize the isotropic layer, and coupled piezoelectric 3D element with twenty nodes is used to mesh the top and bottom layers. CIRCU94 element is added to act as a resistor part of the model. The proposed model is validated with previous works. The numerical parametric studies are presented to illustrate the effects of perforation geometry, the number of rows, the resistance on the natural frequencies, frequency response, and power. It is found that the thickness has a positive relationship with the natural frequency. Perforations help in producing higher voltage, and the best shape is rectangular perforations, and to produce higher voltage, two rows of rectangular perforations should be applied.
