  • Adsorption characteristics of acid green 27 dye using activated carbon were investigated as function of adsorbent dose, pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Freundlich isotherm explained adsorption of acid green 27 dye very well and Freundlich separation factors (1/n=0.293~0.387) were found that this process could be employed as effective treatment method. Kinetic studies showed that the kinetic data were well described by the pseudo second-order kinetic model. Pseudo second rate constant ($k_2$) decreased with the increase in initial acid green 27 concentration. Activation energy (10.457 kJ/mol) and enthalpy (79.946 kJ/mol) indicated that adsorption process was physisorption and endothermic. Since Gibbs free energy decreased with increasing temperature, spontaneity of adsorption reaction increased with increasing temperature in the temperature range of 298 K~318 K.

  • This study focused on the development of high performance catalyst for autothermal reforming (ATR) of gasoline to produce hydrogen. The ATR was carried out over MgO/Al2O3 supported metal catalysts prepared under various experimental conditions. The catalysts before and after reaction were characterized by N2-physisorption, CO-chemisorption, SEM and XRD. The performance of supported multi-metal catalysts were better than that of supported mono-metal catalysts. Especially, it was observed that the conversion of iso-octane over prepared Ni/Fe/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst was 99.9 % comparable with commercial catalyst (ICI) and the selectivity of hydrogen over the prepared catalyst was 65% higher than ICI catalyst. Furthermore, it was identified that the sulfur tolerance of prepared catalyst was much better than ICI catalyst based on the ATR reaction of iso-octane containing sulfur of 100 ppm. Therefore, Ni/Fe/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst can be applied for a fuel reformer, hydrogen station and on-board reformer in furl cell powered vehicles.

  • Under low pressures of $CF_4$ and $C_2F_6$ up to 20.7 kPa, the equilibrium adsorbed quantity on activated carbon was experimentally examined using the volumetric method at various temperatures between 293.15 K and 333.15 K. To give the best fit to the experimental data curve, the two step model (i.e., Langmuir model for the first layer adsorption and then Freundlich physisorption) is suggested. The method of initial slope yielded the enthalpy of adsorption for the first step while we could apply the Clausius-Clapeyron equation to find the heat of adsorption of the second step. They are 25.9 kJ/mol and 11.8 kJ/mol, respectively, with $CF_4$, and 38.7 and 38.2 kJ/mol with $C_2F_6$.

  • The adsorption of various atmospheric harmful gases (COx, NOx, SOx) on graphene-like Germanene 2D sheet was theoretically investigated using density functional theory(DFT) method. The structures were fully optimized at the B3LYP/cc-pvDZ and CAM-B3LYP/cc-pvDZ levels of theory and confirmed to be a local minimum by the calculation of the harmonic vibrational frequencies. The adsorptions of gases on the Germanene sheet were predicted to be a physisorption process for CO, CO2, NO, and SO2 gases but to be a chemisorption process for NO2, SO, and SO2 gases.

  • In this work, the conversion of crystalline cellulose into polyols in the presence of hydrogen was examined over noble metal (Pt, Ru, Ir, Rh, and Pd) catalysts supported on activated carbon. For comparison, Pt/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Pt/H-mordenite were also investigated. Several techniques: $N_2$ physisorption, X-ray diffraction(XRD), inductively-coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), temperature-programmed reduction with $H_2$ ($H_2$-TPR) and CO chemisorption were employed to characterize the catalysts. The cellulose conversion was not strongly dependent on the types of the catalyst used. Pt/AC showed the highest yields to polyols among activated carbon-supported noble metal catalysts, viz. Pt/AC, Ru/AC, Ir/AC, Rh/AC and Pd/AC.

  • The methyl 2-(1,3-dithietan -2- ylidene)-3-oxobutanoate (MDYO) and 2-(1,3-dithietan-2-ylidene) cyclohexane -1,3-dione (DYCD) were synthesized and tested at various concentrations as corrosion inhibitors for 316L stainless steel in 1 M HCl using weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), surface analysis techniques (SEM / EDX and Raman spectroscopy) and Functional Density Theory (DFT) was also used to calculate quantum parameters. The obtained results indicated that the inhibition efficiency of MDYO and DYCD increases with their concentration, and the highest value of corrosion inhibition efficiency was determined in the range of concentrations investigated (0.01 × 10-3 - 10-3 M). Polarization curves (Tafel extrapolation) showed that both compounds act as mixed-type inhibitors in 1M HCl solutions. Electrochemical impedance spectra (Nyquist plots) are characterized by a capacitive loop observed at high frequencies, and another small inductive loop near low frequencies. The thermodynamic data of adsorption of the two compounds on the stainless steel surface and the activation energies were determined and then discussed. Analysis of experimental results shows that MDYO and DYCD inhibitors adsorb to the metal surface according to the Langmuir model and the mechanism of adsorption of both inhibitors involves physisorption. SEM-EDX results confirm the existence of an inhibitor protective film on the stainless steel surface. The results derived from theoretical calculations supported the experimental observation.

  • Efficient and inexpensive hydrogen storage is an essential prerequisite for the utilization of hydrogen, one of the new and clean energy sources for $21^{st}$ century. In this review, several storage techniques are briefly reviewed and compared. Especially, adsorption/storage via physisorption at low temperature, by using nanoporous adsorbents, is reviewed and evaluated for further developments. The adsorption over a porous material at low temperature is currently investigated deeply to fulfill the storage target. In this review, several characteristics needed for the high hydrogen adsorption capacity are introduced. It may be summarized that following characteristics are necessary for high storage capacity over porous materials: i) high surface area and micropore volume, ii) narrow pore size, iii) strong electrostatic field, and iv) coordinatively unsaturated sites, etc. Moreover, typical results demonstrating high storage capacity over nanoporous materials are summarized. Storage capacity up to 7.5 wt% at liquid nitrogen temperature and 80 atm is reported. Competitive adsorbents that are suitable for hydrogen storage may be developed via intensive and continuous studies on design, synthesis, manufacturing and modification of nanoporous materials.

  • This study was to examine the thermodynamic features of polyelecrolytic adsorption of polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin(PAE) in a papermaking wet-end. The PAE adsorption experiments were conducted in a stirred jar containing an aqueous fibrous suspension and evaluated in terms of Langmuir and Freundlich parameters. The electrokinetic property of a stock was examined by measuring the zeta potential of each colloidal suspension. The polyelectrolytic PCD titration was employed to determine the adsorbed amounts of PAE polymer. The zeta potential of a stock, being varied significantly depending upon the addition of PAE polymer, showed initially a sharp increase and later an exponential decay as a function of time . The PAE adsorption exhibited a pseudo-Langmuir adsorption behavior at$20^{\circ}C$ , whereas its Freundlich power(v) increased in a proportional way at an elevated temperature. The train numbers calculated on the basis of adsorption thermodynamics were 7 to 8. The length of the extended loop of PAE was calculated as 215 nm at $20^{\circ}C$ and increased at a rate of 9% at every $10^{\circ}C$ rise in temperature. The PAE adsorption was proven to be an exothermic physisorption with the estimated adsorption enthalpy of -27 to -29 kJ/mol.

  • Al containing mesoporous molecular sieve (Al-MMS) was synthesized by hydrolysis of $H_2SiF_6$ and $Al(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$. The material obtained was characterized by XRD, $N_2$-physisorption. The specific surface area was $981m^2/g$, and the average pore size was uniformity $39{\AA}$. It was confirmed that the acidity of Al-MMS was milder than that of zeolite Y based on the results of $NH_3$-TPD. Active materials, Pt and Pd, were loaded on Al-MMS in order to examine the feasibility of using Al-MMS as a catalyst support in the hydrogenation of aromatic compounds included in the residue oil of a naphtha cracker. The hydrogenation activity of PtPd/Al-MMS has been studied by following the kinetics of the hydrogenation of naphthalene, and by comparing the kinetic parameters obtained with Pt and Pd catalysts supported on the other mesoporous material support and commercial conventional support materials. PtPd/Al-MMS catalyst shows the highest activity of hydrogenation and sulfur resistance. The high activity of PtPd/Al-MMS was confirmed again in the hydrogenation of PGO (pyrolized gas oil), which is residue oil obtained from a naphtha cracker. Therefore, PtPd/Al-MMS can be applied to the hydrogenation of aromatic compounds included in the residue oil of a commercial naphtha cracker commericially.

  • The effect of preparation method on the catalytic activities of the $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts on steam reforming of ethylene glycol was investigated. The catalysts were prepared with various preparation methods such as an incipient wetness impregnation, wet impregnation, and coprecipitation method. In the case of coprecipitation method, various precipitants such as KOH, $K_2CO_3$, and $NH_4OH$ were compared. The prepared catalysts were characterized by using $N_2$ physisorption, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, temperatureprogrammed reduction, pulsed $H_2$ chemisorption, temperature-programmed oxidation, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Among the catalysts reduced at 773 K, the $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalyst prepared by a coprecipitation with KOH or $K_2CO_3$ as precipitants showed the best catalytic performance. The preparation method affected the particle size of Ni, reducibility of nickel oxides, catalytic performance (activity and stability), and types of coke formed during the reaction. The $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalyst prepared by a coprecipitation with KOH showed the increasing catalytic activity with an increase in the reduction temperature from 773 to 1173 K because of an increase in the reduction degree of Ni oxide species even though the particle size of Ni increased with increasing reduction temperature.
