Ulmus macrocarpa has been used in Korean medicinal food material to physical disorder or tonic material. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate splenocyte life span expansion effects of Ulmus macrocarpa water extract (UMWE) in general cell culture condition. Splenocytes were handled in the presence of 100 μg/ml UMWE for several different time conditions. Live cells were detected with Hoechst 33,342 dye and cell survival molecules were identified through Western blot. Changes in level of cytokine synthesis were evaluated by ELISA. UMWE showed an effect on increased splenocyte survival. UMWE elevated slightly PI3K phosphorylation and ERK1/2 phosphorylation used at 48 hr and 96 hr. Moreover, Bcl-2 was elevated at 48 hr and 96 hr in UMWE-treated splenocytes. UMWE decreased caspase-3 level at 48 hr and 96 hr. ICAD protein increased at 48 hr culturing time. Hematopoietin IL-2 cytokine was down-regulated, however IL-4 hematopoietin cytokine was up-regulated in UMWE treated cell culture media. Increased IFN-γ levels were verified in the supernatant of UMWE-treated cells in all periods (48 hr and 96 hr). Increased patterns in the production of IL-12 cytokine occurred as compared with control after 48 and 96 hr in UMWE-treated-cell cultures. These results suggested that UMWE can prolong splenocyte life span by controlling various signal factors and cytokines.

The Korean government has purchased land properties alongside any significant water bodies before setting up the buffers to secure water qualities. Since the annual budgets are limited, however, there has always been the issue of which land parcels ought to be given the priority. Therefore, this study aims to develop efficient mechanism for land acquisition priorities in stream corridors that would ultimately be vegetated for riparian buffer zones. The criteria of land acquisition priority were driven through literary review along with experts' advice. The relative weights of their value and priorities for each criterion were computed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP) method. Major findings of the study are as follows: 1. The decision-making structural model for land acquisition priority focuses mainly on the reduction of non-point source pollutants(NSPs). This fact is highly associated with natural and physical conditions and land use types of surrounding areas. The criteria were classified into two categories-NSPs runoff areas and potential NSPs runoff areas. 2. Land acquisition priority weights derived for NSPs runoff areas and potential NSPs runoff areas were 0.862 and 0.138, respectively. This implicates that much higher priority should be given to the land parcels with NSPs runoff areas. 3. Weights and priorities of sub-criteria suggested from this study include: proximity to the streams(0.460), land cover(0.189), soil permeability(0.117), topographical slope(0.096), proximity to the roads(0.058), land-use types(0.036), visibility to the streams(0.032), and the land price(0.012). This order of importance suggests, as one can expect, that it is better to purchase land parcels that are adjacent to the streams. 4. A standard scoring system including the criteria and weights for land acquisition priority was developed which would likely to allow expedited decision making and easy quantification for priority evaluation due to the utilization of measurable spatial data. Further studies focusing on both point and non-point pollutants and GIS-based spatial analysis and mapping of land acquisition priority are needed.

ZnO with a large band gap (~3.37 eV) and exciton binding energy (~60 meV), is suitable for optoelectronic applications such as ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs) and detectors. However, the ZnO-based p-n homojunction is not readily available because it is difficult to fabricate reproducible p-type ZnO with high hall concentration and mobility. In order to solve this problem, there have been numerous attempts to develop p-n heterojunction LEDs with ZnO as the n-type layer. The n-ZnO/p-GaN heterostructure is a good candidate for ZnO-based heterojunction LEDs because of their similar physical properties and the reproducible availability of p-type GaN. Especially, the reduced lattice mismatch (~1.8 %) and similar crystal structure result in the advantage of acquiring high performance LED devices. In particular, a number of ZnO films show UV band-edge emission with visible deep-level emission, which is originated from point defects such as oxygen vacancy, oxygen interstitial, zinc interstitial[1]. Thus, defect-related peak positions can be controlled by variation of growth or annealing conditions. In this work, the undoped ZnO film was grown on the p-GaN:Mg film using RF magnetron sputtering method. The undoped ZnO/p-GaN:Mg heterojunctions were annealed in a horizontal tube furnace. The annealing process was performed at $800^{\circ}C$ during 30 to 90 min in air ambient to observe the variation of the defect states in the ZnO film. Photoluminescence measurements were performed in order to confirm the deep-level position of the ZnO film. As a result, the deep-level emission showed orange-red color in the as-deposited film, while the defect-related peak positions of annealed films were shifted to greenish side as increasing annealing time. Furthermore, the electrical resistivity of the ZnO film was decreased after annealing process. The I-V characteristic of the LEDs showed nonlinear and rectifying behavior. The room-temperature electroluminescence (EL) was observed under forward bias. The EL showed a weak white and strong yellowish emission colors (~575 nm) in the undoped ZnO/p-GaN:Mg heterojunctions before and after annealing process, respectively.

Porous media for sewage treatment were developed through a pyrolysis process of food wastes with loess in the study. This work was carried out in two consecutive stages; in the first stage, new porous media were prepared through a high temperature pyrolysis process, and then the resultant media were applied to a simple lab-scale sewage treatment process in the second stage. To determine the optimum operating conditions of pyrolysis and mixing ratio of materials, physical properties such as specific surface area, porosity and compressive strength of final products were analyzed. The removal efficiencies of TOC and COD were measured to evaluate the effectiveness of resultant porous media. As a result of the experiment, we found that the best mixing ratio of food wastes to loess was 1 : 1 at $1,100^{\circ}C$. Average porosity of the developed media was 37.0%, in which pore size ranged from 1 to $20{\mu}m$, showing quite vigorous microbial activation. After immersing the media into a reactor for sewage treatment for eight days, removal efficiencies of TOC and COD were 87.3% and 85.0%, respectively.

Because of the important role LD converters play in the production of high quality steel, various dynamic models have been attempted in the past by many researchers not only to understand the complex chemical reactions that take place in the converter process but also to assist the converter operation itself using computers. And yet no single dynamic model was found to be completely satisfactory because of the complexity involved with the process. The process indeed involves dynamic energy and mass balances at high temperatures accompanied by complex chemical reactions and transport phenomena in the molten state. In the present study, a mathematical model describing the dynamic behavior of LD converter process has been developed. The dynamic model describes the time behavior of the temperature and the concentrations of chemical species in the hot metal bath and slag. The analysis was greatly facilitated by dividing the entire process into three zones according to the physical boundaries and reaction mechanisms. These three zones were hot metal (zone 1), slag (zone 2) and emulsion (zone 3) zones. The removal rate of Si, C, Mn and P and the rate of Fe oxidation in the hot metal bath, and the change of composition in the slag were obtained as functions of time, operating conditions and kinetic parameters. The temperature behavior in the metal bath and the slag was also obtained by considering the heat transfer between the mixing and the slag zones and the heat generated from chemical reactions involving oxygen blowing. To identify the unknown parameters in the equations and simulate the dynamic model, Hooke and Jeeves parttern search and Runge-Kutta integration algorithm were used. By testing and fitting the model with the data obtained from the operation of POSCO #2 steelmaking plant, the dynamic model was able to predict the characteristics of the main components in the LD converter. It was possible to predict the optimum CO gas recovery by computer simulation
A low-priced catalyst for pyrolysis of LDPE has been synthesized. Fly ash, which is waste material generated from coal-fired power plants was used as silica and alumna sources for solid acid catalyst. Amorphous silica-alumina catalysts (FSAs) were pre-pared by dissolution of silica and alumina from fly ash, followed by co-precipitation of the dissoluted ions. A series of LDPE pyrolysis were carried out in a thermogravimetric analyzer to investigate the effects of synthesis conditions such as NaOH/fly ash weight ratio and activation time one catalytic performance of FSAs. The physical properties of FSAs were examined and related to their catalytic performances. FSA(1.2-8) synthesized with NaOH/fly ash weight ratio of 1.2 and the activation time of 8 hours showed the best catalytic performance. The catalytic performance of FSA(1.2-8) was comparable with that of commercial catalysts and it was concluded that the FSA could be a good candidate for catalytic use in the recycling of waste polyolefins.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the change of the EGFR mRNA expression in the rat gingival epithelium by the experimental tooth movement. We applied reciprocal force between the upper anterior teeth using NiTi open coil spring and stainless steel wire for 1, 2 3, 7 days. For the detection of EGFR mRNA, in situ hybridization was done in the tissue samples which were taken from the pressure and tension sides of teeth. The results were as follows ; 1. The expression of EGFR mRNA was increased application-time dependently. a. Day 1 mild expression on the basal and spinous cell layers b. Day 2 . moderate expression on the whole layers c. Day 3 : severe expression on the basal and spinous cell layers 4. Day 7 severe expression on the whole layers 2. The expression level of EGFR mRNA in the pressure and tension sides were similar during the whole Period of experiment except seven day application at which the cornified layer of the tension side showed moderate expression. 3. Removal of the appliance after 7-day force application lowered the level of EGRF mRNA expression. It was returned to the mild and control (rare) level at three and seven days after the removal, respectively. In conclusion, EFGR mRNA was increased by the experimental tooth movement on the rat ginigval epithelium. Up-regulation of EGFR mRNA in the gingival epithelium can be regarded as responses to the possible changes caused by the physical stersses to the oral environment to maintain the homeostatic conditions of the periodontium.

Calcium phosphate powders have been prepared by using $Ca(OH)_2\;and\;H_{3}PO_4$ solution under various conditions such as pH, calcination temperature, and reaction time. ${\beta}-TCP({\beta}-tricalcium phosphate)$and HAp(hydroxyapatite) were synthesized at pH=5.21 and pH > 7.62, respectively. From XRD results, $Ca(OH)_2\;and\;H_{3}PO_4$ solution reacted quickly to form HAp, which was structurally stable up to 16h. Calcination temperature having good crystallinity is revealed to be at $1200^{\circ}C$. SEM analysis showed that ${\beta}-TCP$ and HAp with needle type were synthesized at pH 5.21 and pH 7.62, respectively. However, at pH 9.16, tiny and homogeneous HAp having sphere was prepared and rearranged to show needle morphology. HAp synthesized at pH 9.16 was utilized as bonechina body and calcined. The sample was analyzed its crystallinity, water absorbtion, color, and shape to check physical properties.
