  • The mechanical properties and surface characteristics of parylene thin film were improved using Xylydene-based dimers (DPX-C, DPX-D, and DPX-N). A single-parylene-C, D, N film and a hybrid chemical and physical parylene thin films in which two types are mixed were manufactured for each dimer by adjusting the deposition conditions and the thickness of the thin film by input. Parylene was deposited by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and the thermal characteristics of the single thin film and the hybrid thin film were compared by thermal analysis. The mechanical properties of the thin films were characterized by tensile strength, elongation, and tear force tests, and the surface characteristics of the thin films were evaluated by contact angle and surface energy measurements. The hybrid chemical parylene thin film in which two types are mixed can complement the strengths and weaknesses of the different dimers, while the physical parylene thin film can freely adjust the thin film characteristics of the coated surface and the opposite surface.

  • To achieve the ideal performances of paint film, resins and hardeners have to be chosen and designed in a proper way depending on the exposure circumstance of substrate and the requested physical properties. Six different kinds of clear paints were made in this experiment using alkyd polyol, polyester polyol, polyester modified acrylic polyol and another 3 acrylic polyol resins whose $T_g$ and OH value were partially modified. Then the tests for chemical, physical, and mechanical properties were measured after forming the paint films using aliphatic and aromatic polyisocyanate. The viscosity and elasticity of paint film were then measured in terms of gel point and $tan{\delta}$ using Rheometer and DMA. Through this viscoelastic characteristic test of polyurethane resin, we were able to choose the adequate resins and hardeners which are the most important in the top and primer painting system of urethane paint and, as a result of observing the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of paint film by urethane, we have finally reached the conclusion that we could apply the proper polyol to top and primer paint for developing the polyurethane paint system.

  • The classical continuum theory-based thin film model is independent of their size and the surface effect can be ignored. But the surface to bulk ratio becomes very large in nano-size structures such as nano film, nano wire and nano beam. In this case, surface effect plays an important role and its contribution of the surface effect must be considered. Molecular dynamics simulation has been a conventional way to analyze these ultra-thin structures but structures in the range between submicro and micro are difficult to analyze by classical molecular dynamics due to the restriction of computing resources and time. Therefore, in present study, the continuum-based method is considered to predict the overall physical and mechanical properties of the structures in nano-scale, especially, for the thin-film. The proposed continuum based-thin plate finite element is efficient and reliable for the prediction of nano-scale film behavior.

  • This paper surveys the physical properties of the MWNT dispersion solution dispersed with the three types of solvents and of the polyurethane composite film for improvement of mechanical properties and electrical characteristics of PU/MWNT composite film. For this purpose, the MWNT dispersed solution was mixed with three types of solvent such as IPA, MEK and Toluene and then mixed with polyurethane (100part) with variation of loading content (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 part) of MWNT dispersed solution in the ultrasonic wave dispersion apparatus. And eighteen PU/MWNT composite films were prepared as specimens. The various physical properties of these PU/MWNT films were measured and discussed with the loading content of three types of MWNT dispersed solutions. The highest absorbancy among the three types of dispersed solutions was shown in the IPA/MWNT solution. But the absorbancy of PU/MWNT films was not same as the solution. The low electrical surface and volume resistivity of PU/MWNT film were shown at the condition of 20 and 10 parts loading of IPA/MWNT dispersed solution, respectively. The low triboelectricity of PU/MWNT film was shown at the condition of above 30part loading of IPA/MWNT dispersed solution. The breaking strength and strain of PU/MWNT film prepared with IPA/MWNT dispersed solution were decreased with increasing loading content of IPA/MWNT from 10 to 40 parts. The maximum breaking strength and breaking strain according to the dispersion solution were shown on the IPA/MWNT dispersed solution. The uniform dispersion of PU/MWNT film according to the loading content of MWNT solution was shown by surface image analysis on the films dispersed with IPA.

  • In this work, we study physical and mechanical properties of oxide films formed on AZ91D magnesium alloy by plasma anodization at different temperatures. It is found that the higher the electrolyte temperature, the lower is the breakdown voltage of oxide layer. This is probably because films formed at higher temperatures are thinner and denser. Moreover, electrolyte temperature plays an important role in the physical properties of the films. As the electrolyte temperature increases from 20 to $50^{\circ}C$, the hardness of the oxide layer increases. Friction test against steel balls indicates that wear scars become narrower for films formed at higher temperatures because the films are harder, as indicated by the Vickers hardness. The thinner and denser nature of the oxide film formed at $50^{\circ}C$ is also advantageous for heat transfer when film is used as a heat sink. Laser flash test results show very fast heat transfer for AZ91D with plasma anodized oxide layer formed at higher temperatures.

  • Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is one of the most attractive photovoltaic materials due to its low cost, high efficiency and stable performance in physical, optical and electronic properties. Few researches on the influences of uniform surface on the photovoltaic characteristics in large-area CdTe solar cell were not reported. As the preceding study of the effects of thickness-uniformity on the photovoltaic characteristics for the large-area CdTe thin film solar cell, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process was investigated for an enhancement of thickness-uniformity. Removal rate of CdTe thin film was 3160 nm/min of the maximum value at the 200 $gf/cm^2$ of down force (pressure) and 60 rpm of table speed (velocity). The removal rate of CdTe thin film was more affected by the down force than the table speed which is the two main factors directly influencing on the removal rate in CMP process. RMS roughness and peak-to-valley roughness of CdTe thin film after CMP process were improved to 96.68% and 85.55%, respectively. The optimum process condition was estimated by 100 $gf/cm^2$ of down force and 60 rpm of table speed with the consideration of good removal uniformity about 5.0% as well as excellent surface roughness for the large-area CdTe solar cell.

  • In this study, we tried to examine the possibility of developing a dental product such as tooth decay prevention and oral hygiene by manufacturing a natural polymer film for oral use. Natural polymer films were prepared from shark byproduct extract (SBE) and gellan gum (GG). As an antibacterial substance, the antibacterial activity of green tea extract against tooth decay-causing bacteria was measured. An film was prepared by adding green tea extract to the composition of SBE and GG. The mechanical, solubility, moisture content and antibacterial function of the prepared film were investigated in detail. Also, the incorporation of GTE into the SBE/GG film improved the physical performance of the film. Increasing the content of GTE improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film. Formulation of antimicrobial SBE/GG film containing green tea extract was established and these results evidently showed potential for cavity prevention products application.

  • In this study, the physical properties and antifouling were investigated to make the Marine growth antifouling coatings by blending of synthesized silicone resin and pigment with a low surface tension. To examine the film properties and foul release of the prepared coatings, film specimens were prepared with the prepared coatings and anti corrosion coatings. The test results showed that the silicone type antifouling coatings had very excellent antifouling properties rather than any other coatings because of the coating films had followed the low surface tension and elasticity, and prevention of adhesion for marine growth and mechanical adhesions.

  • Blend films of poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) with chitosan were prepared, and their Physical properties and crystallization were investigated. The degree of crystallinity of PHB/chitosan films by X-ray diffraction decreased with increasing chitosan concentration. In the fourier-transformed infrared spectra, carbonyl peak of PHB became lower with increasing the amount of chitosan. The addition of chitosan to PHB film decreased thermal stability and crystallinity of the blend films. The granular sizes of the films were reduced with the addition of chitosan to the film in the microstructural observation by a scanning electron microscope. Mechanical properties, including tensile strength and percent elongation, of the blend films increased with increasing chitosan ratio in the films. For color of the films, L and b values generally decreased with increasing chitosan ratio, but transparency of the films increased.
