Mesoporous ethanesilica thin film was prepared using PEO-PLGA-PEO triblock copolymers as structure-directing agents and (1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane BTESE; bridged organosilicates) as inorganic precursors via one-step sol-gel condensation of ethanesilica precursors. The mesostructure of ethanesilica films is critically dependent on the processing experimental parameters after the hydrolyzed silica sol mixture was spin-cast. This study examined the effects of the block copolymer template/organosilica precursor ratio in the casting solution and aging period before calcination of the mesostructure. It was further demonstrated that mesoscopic ordering of organosilicate thin films is induced by the rearrangement of block copolymer template/organosilica hybrid during thermal decomposition of the PEO-PLGA-PEO triblock copolymer. The mesoporous structure and morphology were characterized by SAXS, TEM and solid-state NMR measurement.
The electroplating of the Ag ions from aqueous solution on activated porous carbons was investigated over a wide range of plating time. The adsorption capacities of Ag metallic carbons were associated with their internal porosity and were related to physical properties such as surface area and pore size distribution. And, surface morphologies and quantitative analysis for the metal supported carbons are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse X-ray (EDX) measurements to explain the changes in adsorption properties. It is considered that the pH is an very important factor at the reason of water pollutant with increasing acidity in industrial field. The results of ICP-AES analysis showed that the residual concentration of Ag ions decreased with an increasing electroplating time. The metallic Ag-activated porous carbons electroplated showed microbicidal effects and strong antibacterial activity against six kinds of strains that were used. Finally, we confirmed that the presence of the electrolytic plated Ag-activated porous carbons is a determining factor in the HCl removal by chemical reaction, clarifying the surface chemical behavior.
The effect of cultural, physical and chemical control methods on the population density of Meloidogyne arenaria second-stage juveniles (J2) and on fruit yields of oriental melon was investigated at Seongju Fruit Vegetable Experiments Station, Kyungpook province, Korea, for two years from 1999 to 2000. Crops used in a rotation prior to Oriental melon were rice, corn, sesame, and green onion. The physical methods used were either solarization, soil addition or soil drying, and a nematicide, fosthiazate of granular formula, was used as the chemical method, applying at a rate of 300g a. i./10 a. Growing rice in the rotation, solarization, and soil addition controlled the nematode disease most effectively, reducing the number of J2 by 90% and increasing fruit yields two times. However, the effects of these control methods on the J2 population were limited to the early growing season; the J2 population increased later, suggesting that additional control practices may be needed in the following season. The next effective control methods were use of corn in the rotation, the nematicide application, and soil drying. The nematicide application was effective only for the early fruit yield, but neither for the late nor for the total yields. Use of sesame or green onion in the rotation was not effective in controlling the nematode.
Coloured wastewater is released as a direct result of the production of dyes as well as from various other chemical industries. Many dyes and their breakdown products may be toxic for living organisms. Activated carbon is one of the best materials for removal of dyes from aqueous solutions. The present study describes the adsorption behaviour of methylene blue dye on three microporous activated carbons, where two samples (AC-1 and AC-2) were prepared by a polymer blend technique and the other is a microporous activated carbon (ARY-3) sample from viscose rayon yarn prepared by chemical-physical activation. The effects of contact time and activated carbon dosage on decolourisation capacity have been studied. The results show that activated carbon having mixed microporosity and mesoporosity show tremendous decolourisation capacity for methylene blue. In addition, the activated carbon in the powder form prepared by the polymer blend technique shows better decolourisation capacity for methylene blue than the activated rayon yarn sample.
A mathematical model is developed for a CSTR in which free radical solution polymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) takes place. It turns out that five ordinary differential equations are to be treated simultaneously in order to predict the reactor performance. Although the reaction proceeds under the conditions of relatively low temperature and pressure, the system shows very complex bifurcation features due to the diffusion limitation (gel effect) and the temperature dependence of the kinetic parameters and physical properties. The effects of various system parameters on the reactor performance as well as on the polymer properties are investigated by using the bifurcation analysis. The application of the singularity theory enables us to divide the parameter space into several different regions, in each of which the system takes a unique steady state structure. Under certain circumstances, complex dynamic features such as HB points and limit cycles are observed and these should be taken into consideration in the reactor design.
In this study, natural rubber latex foam was prepared in order to replace commercialized polyurethane foams as a car seat material. Physical properties of the latex foam were investigated and the light stability was improved. The latex foam was mixed in an aqueous solution state, and the degree of foaming and the accelerator ratios were appropriately controlled. Tensile properties, hysteresis and dynamic mechanical properties of the latex foam were measured to compare with those of polyurethane foams. UV light absorbers and radical scavengers were added for improving light stability of the latex foam. Xenon lamp test was conducted to investigate the effects of the reagents on light stability. Our results revealed that the prepared latex foam including a light absorber with an antioxidant showed excellent light stable performances.

The effects of mechanical activation of carbon black on the processing and properties of butadiene nitrile rubber were studied. Mechanical activation of carbon black caused an improvement in the physical and mechanical properties of the butadiene-nitrile rubber, BNR-18AMN. The optimum activation time that would afford rubber with improved properties was established.
An oxidative thermal regeneration process was developed and evaluated for its potential applicability in several environmental areas. The feasibility of the process is affected strongly by the gradual carbon loss, energy consumption, physical changes of carbon, and effective destruction efficiency of adsorbed materials during the regeneration. The aim of the study is to determine the optimum conditions to maintain acceptable destruction efficiency for adsorbed organics, controlling oxidant flow rate. Prior to its applications, various preliminary tests were carried out to determine the effects of experimental parameters on the process. The tests performed were reaction temperature, carbon loss, surface area, surface structure, and adsorptive property. The results of these tests show that the parameters are dependent on oxidant flow rate, and suggest that the process is comparable and, in some ways, possibly superior to conventional regeneration techniques because the oxidative process is a single step and less energy intensive.
This study was carried out to analyze some influences on ecological health conditions, threaten by various stressors such as physical, chemical and biological parameters. We collected samples in 2008 from three zones of upstream, midstream and downstream, Gap Stream. We applied multi-metric fish assessment index (MFAI), based on biotic integrity model to the three zones along with habitat evaluations based on Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI). We also examined fish fauna and compositions, and analyzed relations with MFAI values, QHEI values, and various guild types. Chemical parameters such as oragnic matter (BOD, COD), nutrients (TP, $NH_3$-N), coli-form number (as MPN), and suspended solids (SS) were analyzed to identify the relationship among multiple stressor effects. Using the sentinel species of Zacco platypus, the population structures and condition factors were analyzed along with DNA damages related with genotoxicant effects by comet assay. This study using all these parameters showed that stream condition was degraded along the longitudinal gradient from upstream to downstream, and the downstream, especially, was impacted by nutrient enrichment and toxicant exposure from the point source, wastewater treatment plant. Overall results indicated that our approaches applying various parameters may be used as a cause-effect technique in the stream health assessments and also used as a pre-warning tool for diagnosis of ecological degradation.
To evaluate utilization of tobacco dust as a raw material of reconstituted tobacco, tobacco dust was applied to the paper-making reconstituted tobacco process and we examined the chemical and physical properties of the reconstituted tobacco and raw materials. The use of tobacco dust in the manufacture of reconstituted tobacco had no measurable adverse effects on the chemical properties of the reconstituted tobacco when added to the reconstituted tobacco formula at levels of $3\%,\;5\%,\;7\%\;and\;10\%$ instead of foreign bright stem. Filling power and fragibility index of the reconstituted tobacco was slightly decreased with increasing tobacco dust levels, but it was not significant change. However, when the level of $10\%$ tobacco dust was added to the reconstituted tobacco formula, the tensile index based basis weight was rapidly decreased.
