  • This paper describes physical meanings of various influences of cavity (or pillar) shape and filling factor of dielectric material on band structures in two-dimensional photonic crystals. Influences of circular and rectangular cross-sections of cavity (or pillar) arrays on photonic band structures are considered theoretically, and significant aspects of square and triangular lattices are compared. It is shown that both averaged dielectric constant of the photonic crystal and distribution profile of photon energy play important roles in designing optical properties. For the triangular lattice, especially, it is shown that cavity array with a rectangular cross-section breaks the band structure symmetry. So, we discuss this point from the band structure and address optical properties of lattice with a circular cross-section cavity.

  • The moving least square (MLS) basis is implemented for the real-space band-structure calculation of 2D photonic crystals. The value-periodic MLS shape function is thus used in order to represent the periodicity of crystal lattice. Any periodic function can properly be reproduced using this shape function. Matrix eigenequations, derived from the macroscopic Maxwell equations, are then solved to obtain photonic band structures. Through numerical examples of several lattice structures, the MLS-based method is proved to be a promising scheme for predicting band gaps of photonic crystals.

  • Much research into two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystal (PC) structures has been conducted for realization of ultrasmall optical integrated circuits. A 2-D silicon (Si) PC slab structure with air cladding (n=1) is one of the representative structures in 2-D PCs. While air-clad Si PC slab structures have good optical characteristics, their suspension in air can lead to mechanical weakness, making integration with some optical devices difficult. In this paper, we propose improving the mechanical robustness of PC structure by developing a 2-D Si PC structure with symmetric silica cladding (n=1.44) and comparing its optical properties to that of the air-clad structure. First, we investigate the optical properties of a 2-D Si PC slab structure with air cladding by using a 3-D finite difference time domain method. We determined that a photonic bandgap of 330 nm and a non-leaky propagating bandwidth of 100 nm in the optical communication range are possible. Next, we investigate the optical properties of 2-D Si PC slab structures with silica cladding. Even though the refractive index of the silica cladding is higher than that of air, we developed a silica-clad structure with good optical properties: a photonic band gap of approximately 230 nm and a non-leaky propagating bandwidth of 90 nm, comparable to that of the air-clad PC structures.

  • The recently published and new results on design and fabrication of magnetophotonic crystals of different dimensionality are surveyed. Coupling of polarized light to 3D photonic crystals based on synthetic opals was studied in the case of low dielectric contrast. Transmissivity of opals was demonstrated to strongly depend on the propagation direction of light and its polarization. It was shown that in a vicinity of the frequency of a single Bragg resonance in a 3D photonic crystal the incident linearly polarized light excites inside the crystal the TE- and TM-eigen modes which passing through the crystal is influenced by Brags diffraction of electromagnetic field from different (hkl) sets of crystallographic planes. We also measured the faraday effect of opals immersed in a magneto-optically active liquid. It was shown that the behavior of the faraday rotation spectrum of the system of the opal sample and magneto-optically active liquid directly interrelates with transmittance anisotropy of the opal sample. The photonic band structure, transmittance and Faraday rotation of the light in three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals of simple cubic and face centered cubic lattices formed from magneto-optically active spheres where studied by the layer Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. We found that a photonic band structure is most significantly altered by the magneto-optical activity of spheres for the high-symmetry directions where the degeneracies between TE and TM polarized modes for the corresponding non-magnetic photonic crystals exist. The significant enhancement of the Faraday rotation appears for these directions in the proximity of the band edges, because of the slowing down of the light. New approaches for one-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals fabrication optimized for the magneto-optical Faraday effect enhancement are proposed and realized. One-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals utilizing the second and the third photonic band gaps optimized for the Faraday effect enhancement have been successfully fabricated. Additionally, magnetophotonic crystals consist of a stack of ferrimagnetic Bi-substituted yttrium-iron garnet layers alternated with dielectric silicon oxide layers of the same optical thickness. High refractive index difference provides the strong spatial localization of the electromagnetic field with the wavelength corresponding to the long-wavelength edge of the photonic band gap.

• Photonic crystals containing multiple rugate structure are prepared by electrochemical etchings. Typically etched rugate PSi prepared in this study. Etching is carried out in a Teflon cell by using a two-electrode configuration with a Pt mesh counter electrode. They exhibit sharp photonic band gaps in the optical reflectivity spectrum. This reflectivity can be tuned to appear anywhere in the visible to near-infrared spectral range, depending on the programmed etch waveform. We study the method of full width half maxima and reflectivity index control by using amplitude.

  • The design and analysis of a novel photonic crystal electro-optic modulator are presented in this paper. The device incorporates an electro-optic (EO) polymer slot waveguide into the center of a silicon photonic crystal waveguide. In this device, strong optical confinement in the EO polymer core and small group velocity from the photonic crystal structure provide a surprise enhancement of the EO effect.

  • There are now many theoretical investigations and real manufactures for numerous applications of photonic crystals (PCs) associated with photonic band gap and photonic integrated circuits. However, there are some difficulties to design and fabricate the desired pattern quality. It is not easy to satisfy accurate critical dimension (CD) for patterns with arbitrary shapes and pitch sizes aligned in various directions. In this work, we report the optimum conditions to better fabricate and design, and greatly improve pattern quality in delineating two-dimensional (2D) PCs in the nanometer range using single- step e-beam lithography system with conventional exposure mode.

  • A cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) system exhibits one-dimensional (1-D) Photonic bandgap (PBG) characteristics in the transmission spectrum through a selective Bragg reflection. Related to the nonlinear optical (NLO) processes in a PBG structure of CLC, the inherent periodicity has been exploited to Phase-match the fundamental and the harmonic waves through the umklapp Processes. Near bandgap edges of a CLC, harmonic generations have been shown to be enhanced significantly through the field localization. (omitted)

  • We numerically investigate by the finite-difference time-domain method the effects of surface termination on directional emission exiting a photonic crystal waveguide. The directed power and far-field beam profile for the original proposal [E. Moreno et al., Phys. Rev. B 69, 121402 (2004)] and its enhancement [S. K. Morrison et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 86, 081110 (2005)] are computed for different values of some important parameters. We find another surface termination condition with a positive surface displacement in the structure of the original proposal which has a negative surface displacement. Our surface termination is more effective than the original structure, and nearly as effective as the termination for the enhancement, for directional emission. Besides, our termination is simpler than that for the enhancement. We confirm the effectiveness of directional emission from our termination in its far-field beam profile, radiation intensity distribution, and additionally the wave-vector space representation by the Fourier analysis.
