The Photometric Brightness Variation of Geostationary Orbit Satellite

  • Photometric observation is one of the most effective techniques for determining the physical characteristics of unknown space objects and space debris. In this research, we examine the change in brightness of the Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite-1 (COMS-1) Geostationary Orbit Satellite (GEO), and compare it to our estimate model. First, we calculate the maximum brightness time using our calculation method and then derive the light curve shape using our rendering model. The maximum brightness is then calculated using the induced equation from Pogson's formula. For a comparison with our estimation, we carried out photometric observation using an optical telescope. The variation in brightness and the shape of the light curve are similar to the calculations achieved using our model, but the maximum brightness shows a slightly different value from our calculation result depending on the input parameters. This paper examines the photometric phenomenon of the variation in brightness of a GEO satellite, and the implementation of our approach to understanding the characteristics of space objects.

Photometric Reverberation Mapping of Active Galactic Nuclei with Medium-band filters and LSGT

  • Reverberation mapping is one of the best way to investigate structure and kinematics of broad-line regions around central supermassive black holes of active galactic nuclei (AGN). It is usually used to estimate masses of supermassive black holes. So far, reverberation mapping studies have achieved good results for dozens of AGN by spectroscopic monitoring. However, spectroscopic monitoring is time consuming and high cost. Here, we present result of photometric reverberation mapping with medium-band observation. We monitored five nearby AGN which are already studied, have short time-lag, and show bright H-alpha emission lines. Observation has been performed for ~3 months with ~3 days cadence using three medium-band filters installed in LSGT (Lee Sang Gak Telescope). We found 0.01-0.06 magnitude variations by differential photometry. Also time-lags between continuum light-curves and H-alpha emission line light-curves are calculated using Javelin software. The result shows that our study and previous studies are consistent within uncertainty range. From verification of availability in this study, photometric reverberation mapping could be used as a powerful tool to measure central supermassive black holes for large samples and high-redshift AGN in the future.

Polarimetric research on S- and Q-type Near-Earth Asteroids

  • Polarimetry is a powerful technique to investigate the physical properties of surface materials on airless bodies in the solar system. It is known that the degree of linear polarization changes as a function of the phase angle (the angle between Sun-target-Observer). Especially, the dependency of the polarization degree at large phase angle allows us to obtain information related to the particle size and porosity, which is difficult to be determined via other observation techniques (i.e., photometry and spectroscopy). However, despite the advantage, only a few asteroids were observed with polarimetric devices at large phase angles. Here, we present our new polarimetric research of Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) observed at the large phase angles. Among the NEAs, we focus on S- and Q-type asteroids, which include: (331471) 1984 QY1, (90075) 2002 VU94, and (66391) 1999 KW4. The observation was conducted using the Pirka 1.6-m Telescope at the Nayoro Observatory of Hokkaido University at the phase angles ${\alpha}{\sim}100degree$, which provides us the maximum polarization degrees of these objects. Considering the observational results together with two objects ((1566) Icarus and (4179) Toutatis) in reference papers [1], [2], we will discuss the implication of the regolith size on their surfaces.

Post-outburst observation of HBC722 in Pelican nebula

  • HBC722 (also known as LkHa 188-G4 and PTF 10qpf; A. Miller et al., 2011) is one of the FU Orionis-like young stellar objects which outbursted in August 2010 (Semkov et al., 2010). We have been monitoring the post-outburst phase of this object since November 2010 with Korean Astronomy and Space Science Institute Near Infrared Camera System (KASINICS), at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). Four filters, J, H, Ks, and H2 band, were used for this observation. We did aperture photometry to find photometric variation. The light curve shows a long period brightness change. After decrease of the brightness, which was reported at the KAS 2011 fall meeting, HBC722 brightens up slowly now. However we cannot confirm any short period variations, previously reported by Green et al (2013), due to large scatters in the obtained light curve.

Data Management Plan for the KMTNet Project

  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is developing three 1.6m optical telescopes with $18k{\times}18k$ mosaic CCD cameras. These telescopes will be installed and operated at Chile, South Africa, and Australia for Korea Micro-lensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) project. The main scientific goal of the project is to discover earth-like extra-solar planets using the gravitational micro-lensing technique. To achieve the goal, each telescope at three sites will continuously monitor the specific region of Galactic bulge with 2.5 minute cadence for five years. Assuming 12 hour observation in maximum for a night, the amount of 200 GB file storage is required for one night observation at one observatory. If we consider the whole project period and the data processing procedure, a few PB class data storage, high-speed network, and high performance computers are essential. In this presentation, we introduce the KMTNet data management plan that handles gigantic data; raw image collecting, image processing, photometry pipeline, database archiving, and backup.

Investigation of surface homogeneity of (3200) Phaethon

  • We present observational evidence of the surface homogeneity on Phaethon based on the time-series multi-band photometry and spectrometry. The observations of Phaethon were conducted in Nov.-Dec. 2017. We confirmed that Phaethon is a B-type asteroid, as was previously known, and its rotational color variation was not detected. During our observation period, the sub-solar latitude of this asteroid was approximately $55^{\circ}S$, corresponding to the southern hemisphere of the body. Thus, we found that the southern hemisphere of Phaethon has a homogeneous surface from our observation results. In addition, we compared our spectra with archival data to investigate the latitudinal surface properties of the asteroid. The result showed that it doesn't have a latitudinal color variation. To verify this assumption, we investigated its solar-radiation heating effect, and the result suggested that this asteroid underwent a uniform thermal metamorphism regardless of latitude, which is consistent with our observations. Based on this result, we discuss the homogeneity of the surface of the body.

Standard Calibration for Broadband and Narrowband Filters of KHAO 0.4 m Telescope

  • Maemi Dual Field Telescope System (MDFTS) is a dual telescope system located at Kyung Hee University. The system consists of 0.4 m telescope and 0.1 m telescope for wide-field observation. The 0.4 m telescope provides photometric observation which covers a field of view of 21'×16'. It has been used for various purposes with Johnson-Cousins UBVRI broadband filter system, e.g., SomangNet and Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies. In this poster, we present the standard calibration result for our broadband filter system. Also, we suggest a new usage of the KHAO 0.4m telescope which is narrowband photometry by demonstrating the standard calibration of H-alpha filter. For flux calibration, not only R filter but also V filter is used for compensating the central wavelength discrepancy between R filter and H-alpha filter.

Relative merits of different types of multi-wavelength observations to constrain galaxy physical parameter

  • I will present a new approach to constrain galaxy physical parameters from the combined interpretation of stellar and nebular emission in wide ranges of observations. This approach relies on a comprehensive library of synthetic spectra, assembled using state-of-the-art models of star formation and chemical enrichment histories, stellar population synthesis, nebular emission and attenuation by dust. We focus on the constraints set by 5-band photometry and low- and medium-resolution spectroscopy at optical rest wavelengths on a few physical parameters characterizing the stars and interstellar medium. Since these parameters cannot be known a priori for any galaxy sample, we assess the accuracy to which they can be retrieved by simulating 'pseudo-observations' using models with known parameters. We find that the combined analysis of stellar and nebular emission in low-resolution (50A FWHM) galaxy spectra provides valuable constraints on all physical parameters. The approach can be extended to the analysis of any type of observation and during this talk i will present some applications to observed galaxies up to redshift 1.5.

  • In the region of the open cluster M48 (NGC 2548), time-series BV CCD images were taken for 22 nights from February 28 in 2008 to March 17 in 2011. From this observation, we found 10 new variable stars. They include five eclipsing binaries, an RR Lyrae, two ${\delta}$ Scuti, and two semi-periodic and/or slow irregular type variable stars. We fail to find the member stars of the open cluster among the 10 variable stars.

  • Speckle Interferometer equipped with an ITT intensified CCD have been used on the NCUO ( National Central University Observatory, Taiwan) 24-inch telescope for studying the orbits of bright binary systems selected from the Yale's Bright Star Catalogue. The high resolution and high sensitivity ITT intensified solid state video camera ( F4577 ) has external gain and gate control functions which will simplify the design of the speckle camera and allow us to do precise speckle photometry. The goal of this project is trying to study the bright binary systems with separations between the average size of seeing disk and the diffraction limit of the 24-inch telescope. Recently some observing data have been reduced and compared with the other teams' results. We are now improving the data reduction technology and trying to use real time observing mode on the monthly routine observation.
