A PHOTOMETRIC STUDY ON THE FORMATION OF THE EARLY TYPE GALAXIES IN NEARBY GALAXY CLUSTERS

  • We present a photometric study of galaxies in the central regions of six nearby galaxy clusters at redshift z=0.0231${\~}$0.0951. We have derived BVI photometry of the galaxies from the CCD images obtained at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomical Observatory (BOAO) in Korea, and JHKs photometry of the bright galaxies from the 2MASS extended source catalog. Comparing the galaxy photometry results with the simple stellar population model of Bruzual & Charlot (2003) in the optical & NIR color-color diagrams, we have estimated the ages and metallicities of early type galaxies. We have found that the observed galaxies had recent star-formation mostly 5 ${\~}$ 7 Gyrs ago but the spread in age estimation is rather large. The average metallicities are [Fe/H]=0.l${\~}$0.5 dex. These results support the hypothesis that large early type galaxies in clusters are formed via hierarchical merging of smaller galaxies.

  • UBV RI and H$\alpha$ photometry has been performed for the open cluster NGC 6531. A total of 56 bright main sequence (MS) members were selected from their positions in photometric diagrams. We also classified 7 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars and 6 PMS candidates with Ha: emission from H$\alpha$ photometry. We determined a reddening of < E(B - V) >= 0.29 $\pm$ 0.03 and a distance modulus of Vo - Mv = 10.5 for the cluster. From the comparison of our photometric results to theoretical evolution models, we derived a MS turnoff age of 7.5 Myr and a PMS age spread of $\~$4 Myr. The IMF slope $\Gamma$, calculated in the mass range of 0.45 $\le$ log m $\le$ 1.35 is a steep value of $\Gamma$ = -1.8 $\pm$ 0.6.

  • The astrophysical parameters of four unstudied open star cluster candidates; Ivanov 2, 7, 9, and Harvard 9; are estimated for the first time using the PPMXL database. The stellar density distributions and color-magnitude diagrams for each cluster are used to determine the geometrical structure (cluster center, limited radius, core and tidal radii, the distances from the Sun, from the Galactic center and from the Galactic plane). Also, the main photometric parameters (age, distance modulus, color excesses, membership, total mass, relaxation time, luminosity and mass functions) are estimated.

  • It is important to select light sources and luminaires in the process of lighting design. Therefore, development of light sources has been constantly grown for a high efficacy and long life. And, the design of luminaires has been developed for the reflection of light mechanism. But it has been not enough to study for the refraction of light mechanism Therefore, the propose of this study is to study for the refraction of light mechanism. In addition, this study is modeling for the luminous intensity distribution of planar prism to use the results of photometric data that is able to obtain various luminous intensity distribution.

Photometric Properties of White Dwarf Dominated Halos

  • Using stellar population synthesis techniques, we explore the photometric signatures of white dwarf progenitor dominated galactic halos, in order to constrain the fraction of halo mass that may be locked-up in white dwarf stellar remnants. We first construct a 10^9 M_sun stellar halo using the canonical Salpeter initial stellar mass distribution, and then allow for an additional component of low-and intermediate-mass stars, which ultimately give rise to white dwarf remnants.   • The long-term observational properties of the photometric behaviors of the short period(p=0.48 day) eclipsing binary system XY UMa are discussed. They are based on the UBV observatins, which were carried out by Geyer in the yaers 1955-1961, 1968, 1975-1984. Light curves of XY UMa revealed very large changes not only between consecutive observing nights, but also from season to season. Between 1955 and 1984, the mean system brightness increased about 30% during this time interfvals, meanwhile, the orbital period of this system was constant whithin 1.6% of its period. The colour index curve shows similar variations like the light curve but with a phase offset oscillation around the time instants of the primary minama. Observational evidence for photospheric and chromospheric activities on the XY Uma are also discussed.

  • 2000년 2월부터 2001년 2월까지 소백산 천문대 61cm 망원경을 사용하여 CCD측광관측에 의한 ZZ Aur.(B, V & R)의 새로운 광도곡선을 얻었다. 이와 함께 새로운 광도곡선으로 부터 주극심시각 3점과 부극심시각 7점을 얻었다. 새로운 광도곡선을 WD model에 적용하여 이 별의 궤도 요소를 구하였다

  • Svechnikow & Kuznetsova (1990)의 Catalogue of Approximate Photometric and Absolute Elements of Eclipsing Variable로 부토 3780개의 식 쌍성들을 이용하여 식 쌍성의 질량-궤도 각 운동량과의 상관 관계를 조사하였다. 그 결과 쌍성이 진화하는 동안 궤도 각 운동량이 보전되지 못하며, 비록 일정한 값을 갖지는 않지만 점진적으로 분리형에서 준분리 형으로 그리고 접촉형으로 진화할수록 그 값이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • A total of 5199 photometric observations (1733 obsrvations in each UBV) ofclose binary RZ Cas were made on 46 nights Som November 1991 tsfebruary 1993 with the 35-cm Schmidt Cassegrain reflector atChungbuk National University. We observed eight primarr eclipses with flatbottom which indicate total eclipse. In recent years, Nakamura et at.(1991)recognized that there exist disagreements where the primarr is the totaleclipse or partial one. He estimated the its duration to be 14 minutes witha primary minimum. We determined the durations of the totality withtwenty-seven difsent light cunres which include earlier obsevations. It isfound that the mean value of each duration is to be 17,1 minutes, conespondingto phase 0.01. And also an interpretation of the new light curies will bepresented

A Photometric Study of the W UMa-type Contact Binary GX Aurigae

  • The CCD photometric observations of the W UMa type contact binary GX Aur were performed for 33 nights from 2004 to 2008 using a 2K CCD camera and Johnson BVRI filter system attached to the 61cm reflector at Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO). From our observations, the first BVRI light curves of GX Aur were completed and eight new times of minima (primary: 4, secondary: 4) were obtained. All the times of minima including our timings were collected and analyzed to see the dynamical behavior of GX Aur system. Intensive analysis of our BVRI lightcurves with the recent Wilson-Devinney binary model shows that GX Aur is an over-contact binary whose component stars have equal mass and time-variable spots.
