The Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared by a sol-gel method and were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). The Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites were developed for the decomposition of organic dyes by using a UV lamp. The decomposition effect was investigated under various conditions, such as three selected non-biodegradable organic dyes like Methylene Blue (MB), Methyl Orange (MO), Rhodamine B (Rh.B), and in the presence of Fe and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$). The photocatalytic activity was derived from possible combination effects, such as (1) adsorption of ACF, (2) generation of electron/hole by $TiO_2$, (3) photo-Fenton reaction of Fe, and (4) oxidation of $Fe^{2+}\;to\;Fe^{3+}\;by\;H_2O_2$.
[ $TiO_2$ ] is widely used because it is non-toxic. Recently, however, nanometer size $TiO_2$ particles (P-25) have been produced and used to increase the photo catalysis efficiency. Nanometer-sized $TiO_2$ is efficient, but due to its small size ($20{\sim}30\;nm$), it can flow into ecosystems and into cells. Thus, it may affect human health. Additionally, $TiO_2$ can produce a second contaminant, OH-radical, which is a health risk for all living organisms during photo degradation reaction. Hence, when nanometer-sized $TiO_2$ flows into natural streams and attaches to living organisms, it will create health risks. We investigated the biological toxicity of this condition in zebrafish embryos. We observed abnormal morphology, hatching rate, and measured the catalase activity to determine anti-oxidation at 100 post fertilization hours. Zebrafish were somewhat affected by $TiO_2$ nanometer sized particles under UV-A (a condition similar to sunlight). Powdered $TiO_2$ is toxic to the zebrafish fly. Even without light, $TiO_2$ particles attached to embryos and flies, having an effect on both.

Skin aging is the most readily observable process involved in human aging. Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation causes photo-oxidation via generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby damaging the nucleus and cytoplasm of skin cells and ultimately leading to cell death. Recent studies have shown that high levels of solar UVB irradiation induce the synthesis of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in skin fibroblasts, causing photo-aging and tumor progression. The MMP family is involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes such as arthritis and metastasis. We investigated the effect of diphlorethohydroxycarmalol (DPHC) against damage induced by UVB radiation in human skin keratinocytes. In UVB-irradiated cells, DPHC significantly reduced expression of MMP mRNA and protein, as well as activation of MMPs. Furthermore, DPHC reduced phosphorylation of ERK and JNK, which act upstream of c-Fos and c-Jun, respectively; consequently, DPHC inhibited the expression of c-Fos and c-Jun, which are key components of activator protein-1 (AP-1, up-regulator of MMPs). Additionally, DPHC abolished the DNA-binding activity of AP-1, and thereby prevented AP-1-mediated transcriptional activation. These data demonstrate that by inactivating ERK and JNK, DPHC inhibits induction of MMPs triggered by UVB radiation.
The Electron/Hole Pair is generated when the Activation Energy produces by Ultraviolet Ray illumination to the Semiconductor. And $OH^-$ ion produces by Water Photo-Cleavage reacts with Positive Hole. As a result, OH Radical acting as strong oxidant is generated and then Photocatalytic Oxidation Reaction occurs. The Photocatalytic Oxidation can oxidize the chlorophenol to Chloride and Carbon Dioxide easier, safer and shorter than conventional Water Treatment Process With the same degree of chlorination, the $Cl^-$ ion at para (C4) position is most easily replaced by the OH radical. And then, the blocking effect of $OH^-$ ion between the $Cl^-$ ions and $Cl^-$ ions at symmetrical location is easily replaced by the OH radical. For mono-, di-, tri-chlorophenols, there is no obvious difference in decomposition rate, decomposition efficiency and completeness of the decomposition reaction except for 2,3-dichloropheno, 2,4,5-, 2,3,4-trichlorophenol. The decomposition efficiency is higher than 75% and completeness of the decomposition reaction is higher than 70%. Therefore, continuous flow photocatalytic reactor is promising process to remove the chlorinated aromatic compounds which is more toxic than non-chlorinated aromatic compound.
We report a top-down approach based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) local anodic oxidation for the fabrication of the nano-pattern field effect transistors (FETs). AFM anodic oxidation is relatively a simple process in atmosphere at room temperature but it still can result in patterns with a high spatial resolution, and compatibility with conventional silicon CMOS process. In this work, we study nano-pattern FETs for various cross-bar distance value D, from ${\sim}0.5\;{\mu}m$ to $1\;{\mu}m$. We compare the optical characteristics of the patterned FETs and of the reference FETs based on both 2-dimensional simulation and experimental results for the wavelength from 100 nm to 900 nm. The simulated the drain current of the nano-patterned FETs shows significantly higher value incident the reference FETs from ${\sim}1.7\;{\times}\;10^{-6}A$ to ${\sim}2.3\;{\times}\;10^{-6}A$ in the infrared range. The fabricated surface texturing of photo-transistors may be applied for high-efficiency photovoltaic devices.
Titania photocatalytic oxidation reactors were studied to investigate degradation efficiencies of hydrocarbons. In general, it is well known phenomena that thin layered titania oxidizes most of hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water under UV light. In this study, degradation efficiencies were measured due to changes in reactor structures, UV sources, the number of titania coatings, and various hydrocarbon chemicals. It was proven that gas degradation efficiencies are related to such factors as UV transmittance of coating substance, collision area of surface, and gas flow rate. For packing type annular reactor, about 98% degradation efficiency was achieved for achieved for propylene of 500 ppm level at a flow rate of 100 ml/min. Several gases were also tested for double-coated titania thin film under the condition of continuous flow of 100 ml/min and 365 nm UV source. It was shown that degradation efficiencies were decreasing in the order: $C_3$$H_{6}$, n-C$_4$$H_{10}$, $C_2$$H_4$, $C_2$$H_2$, $C_{6}$$H_{6}$ and $C_2$$H_{6}$./. 6/./.
Titania gel formations were prepared by sol-gel method using titanium(IV) chloride $(TiCl_4)$, and its characteristics were analyzed by varying the $epoxide/TiCl_4$ ratio and the amount of water In the end, titania $(TiO_2)$ aerogel were prepared using supercritical drying process. VOCs such as benzene, toluene, and m-xylene (BTX) were oxidized using prepared titania aerogel and commercially available $TiO_2$, and its performance was compared. The surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter of 1,2-epoxybutane are significantly smaller than the propylene oxide. And the titania aerogels with 6 moi of epoxides have high surface areas, pore volumes, and average pore diameters. As a result of photo-oxidation, conversion of benzene was reached about $70\%$, and other reactants were reached about $60\%$ similarly. The conversion of BTX was increased as inlet concentration decreased. The reactivity of titania calcined at $600^{\circ}C$ was greater than $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. Water is required as a reactants for the oxidation of VOCs, and the continuous consumption of hydroxyl radicals required replenishments to maintain catalyst activity. The activity ratio increased with increasing reaction time when enough amount of water was present in the reactor.
In this paper, three types of CNT/$TiO_2$ composite electrodes were prepared with different methods. The changes in XRD patterns showed that the Electrode A contained a mixed phase of anatase and rutile while the Electrode B and Electrode C contained a typical single and clear anatase crystal structure. From SEM micrographs, $TiO_2$ particles were adhered on the surface of the CNT network in the forms of small clusters. The results of chemical elemental analysis indicated that the main elements such as C, O and Ti were existed. The results demonstrated that the efficiency of photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation for methylene blue (MB) was higher than that of photocatalytic (PC) oxidation. There was a clear enhancement trend of the MB degradation using the prepared CNT/$TiO_2$ composite electrodes with an increase of applied potential. Finally, the prominent PEC activities of the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites could be attributed to combination effects of photo-degradation of $TiO_2$, electron assistant of CNT and function of applied potential.
In this study, we have studied on improved performance of carbon nanotubes/titanium (CNT/TiO2) structure electrode for methylene blue (MB). The composite electrodes consisting of CNTs and a titanium oxide matrix with phenol resin binder was fabricated with a mixture method. The chemical and morphological structure of CNT/Ti$O_2$ composites were characterized by means of BET surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis absorption technique, Raman spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The electrode showed a remarkably enhanced performance for MB oxidation under UV illumination with or without electro-chemical reaction (ECR). Such a remarkably improved performance of the CNT/Ti$O_2$ structure electrode might be due to the enhanced MB oxidation by electro- and photo-generated electrons and holes in the CNTs and Ti$O_2$ under UV illumination with or without ECR.
