Chitosan powder is synthesized by a deasetylation process of chitin, obtained from processing of dried shrimp shell powder. Subsequently, chitosan (CS) membranes filled by montmorillonite (MMT) particles and phosphotungstic acid are prepared, and characterized by FT-IR and SEM. The morphology, obtained by SEM for the composite membrane, showed that MMT filler is successfully incorporated and relatively well dispersed in the chitosan polymer matrix. Water and methanol uptake for the CS/MMT composite membranes decrease with increasing MMT loadings, but IEC value increases. In all prepared CS/MMT composite membranes, the CS membrane filled by 5 wt% MMT particles exhibits the best proton conductivity, while that with 10 wt% MMT loading exhibits the lowest methanol permeability; these values are 2.67 mS·cm-1 and 3.40 × 10-7 cm2·s-1, respectively. The best membrane selectivity is shown in the CS/MMT10 composite membrane; this shows that 10 wt% filled MMT is the optimum loading to improve the performance of the chitosan composite membrane. These characteristics make the developed chitosan composite membranes a promising electrolyte for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) application.

Sol-gel method was utilized to prepare SPEEK/PWA electrolyte composite membranes. TEOS was used as a precursor and phosphotungstic acid(PWA) as a catalyst for the sol-gel reaction. It was observed through FE-SEM analysis that the PWA and silica nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed into the polymer matrix. The water uptake of SPEEK/PWA/silica composite membranes was less affected by TEOS concentration at higher TEOS contents, while the water uptake decreased as TEOS concentration increased at lower TEOS contents. The proton conductivity of the composite membranes showed similar trend as the water uptake of the composite membranes. The methanol permeability of SPEEK/PWA/silica composite membranes decreased as TEOS concentration increased.

Composite membranes were prepared by the solution casting method from sulfonated poly(etheretherketone)(sPEEK) and imidazole and phosphotungstic acid(PWA) to enhance the electrolytic properties of the membrane. TGA measurements showed that physical crosslinking due to acid-base interactions improved the thermal resistance to the desulfonation of sulfonic acid groups of the composite membrane and the addition of PWA enhanced the resistance to thermal decomposition of the composite membrane. The acid-base interaction decreased the water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the sPEEK/imidazole composite membranes. The addition of PWA increased the proton conductivities while it decreased the water uptake and methanol permeability of sPEEK/imidazole/PWA composite membranes. Therefore, the selectivity of the composite membranes was enhanced by the addition of PWA.
The model compounds of Vitamin $B_1$ 3-benzyl-4-methylthiazolium bromide, (1), 3, 4-dimethylthiazolium iodide (2) and 2-($\alpha$-hydroxyethyl)-3-benzyl-4-methylthiazolium bromide (3) were prepared by the organic synthesis. Colorimetric determination with phosphotungstic acid showed an increase of $1.1{\sim}1.2$ folds with compound (1) and $1.5{\sim}1.9$ folds with compound (3) when readings were carried out after an overnight, compared with immediate readings. Colorimetry with 2.6-dibromoquinone chloroimide yielded the compound (1) being $2.2{\sim}2.5$ folds higher than the compound (3). The half wave potentials and diffusion currents of anodic and cathodic waves of polarography with the same concentration of the compounds (1), (2) and (3) also resulted in different values of their waves. Therefore, it was a firm conclusion that any values obtained from quantitative analysis with this model compounds (1), (2) and (3) were not directly applicable to those of $B_1$.

The preparation and characterization of new polymer composite membranes containing polyphenylene oxide (PPO) thin films with hetropoly acid (HPA) are presented. PPO thin films with phosphotungstic acid (PWA) or phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) have been prepared by using the solvent mixture. The PWA and PPO can be blended using the solvent mixture, because PPO and PWA are not soluble in the same solvent. In this study, methanol was used as a solvent dissolving PWA and chloroform was used as a solvent dissolving PPO. PPO-PWA solutions were cast onto a glass plate with uniform thickness. The composite membranes were prepared by casting Nafion mixture on porous PPO-PWA films. The morphology and structure of these PPO-PWA films were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The composite membranes were characterized by measuring their ion conductivity and methanol permeability. The performance was evaluated with composite membranes as electrolytes in fuel cell conditions. The methanol cross-over of composite membranes containing PPO-PWA barrier films in the DMFC reduced by 66%.

Proton conductive hybrid nanocomposite polymer electrolyte membranes comprising polystyrene-5-poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PHEMA), sulfosuccinic acid (SA) and phosphotungstic acid (PWA) were prepared by varying PWA concentrations. The PHEMA block was thermally crosslinked by SA via the esterification reaction between -OH of PHEMA and -COOH of SA. Upon the incorporation of PWA into the diblock copolymer, the symmetric stretching bands of the $SO_3^-$ group at $1187cm^{-1}$ shifted to a lower wavenumber at $1158cm^{-1}$, demonstrating that the PWA particles strongly interact with the sulfonic acid groups of SA. When the concentration of PWA was increased to 30wt%, the proton conductivity of the composite membrane at room temperature increased from 0.045 to 0.062 S/cm, presumably due to the intrinsic conductivity of the PWA particles and the enhanced acidity of the sulfonic acid in the membranes. The membrane containing 30wt% of PWA exhibited a proton conductivity of 0.126 S/cm at $100^{\circ}C$. Thermal stability of the composite membranes was also enhanced by introducing PWA nanoparticles.

The aim of present study was to examine the effect of carrageenan on the tendon of skeletal muscle of rat. The tendon damage was induced by injection of carrageenan into skeletal hind muscle of rats. Rats were killed on 48 hours after carrageenan injection. The resulting tendons were fixed with 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF), dehydrated, embedded, sectioned by 4 μm, and stained by phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin (PTAH) or hematoxylin-eosin (H-E). Carrageenan induced the segregation of tendon fibers, intratendinous cleft, segregation of muscle cell group, wave arrangement of tendon fiber. The results suggest that carrageenan induced tendon damage of rat's skeletal muscle by morphological changes.
The authors have observed clinically and histopathologically on two cases of rhabdomyosarcomas occurred in the oral cavity.
The results were as follow:
1. A case of adult pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma, involving the right mandibular third molar area of 52 year old male, revealed pathological fracture of the right mandibular angle area. Microscopically, sections of this tumor showed cross striations by staining of phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin.
2. A case of embryonal alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, involving the right buccal area of one year and ten months old female, revealed severe bone destruction on the right mandibular body area. Microscopically, sections of this tumor did not show cross striations.

Inorganic polymer based hybrid membranes consisting of zirconium oxide and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) have been synthesized by sol-gel processes. The hybrid membranes showed thermal stability and flexibility up to $300^{\circ}C$. The membrane becomes proton conducting polymer electrolyte when added with 12-phosphotungstic acid (PWA). The conductivity of the membranes was measured in the temperature range from room temperature to $150^{\circ}C$ under saturated humidity and a maximum conductivity of $5{\times}10^{-5}\;Sm^{-1}$ was obtained at $150^{\circ}C$.
PVA/SSA/HPA composite membranes were prepared by the addition of SSA as a crosslinking agent and HPA such as PWA or SiWA. The water uptake decreased and the IEC increased as the HPA contents increased in PVA/SSA/HPA composite membranes. XRD results showed that HPA distributed well into the composite membranes as the HPA concentration increased, and SiWA dispersed better than PWA in the composite membranes. TGA results showed that PVA/SSA composite membranes were more heat-resistant than PVA due to the crosslinking of PVA, and the heat stability of the composite membranes improved much more as the concentration of HPA increased. The methanol barrier property of PVA/SSA/HPA composite membranes was superior to Nafion, and the methanol permeability of the composite membranes decreased as the concentration of HPA increased.
