Effects of Ethanol and Dietary Protein Levels on Calcium and Phosphorus Metabolism in Rats (알콜과 단백질수준이 흰쥐의 칼슘 및 인의 대사에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of ethanol and dietary protein levels on the calcium and phosphorus metabolism were investigated in 15-week-old male rats. Rats were divided into 4 groups ; control group(16% protein, 16 PC) and 8%(8 PE), 16%(16 PE), and 24% protein groups (24 PE) to which was given 5% ethanol mixed with their drinking water. Body weigh gain, organ weight, hemoglobin content, and hematocrit value were not affected by either ethanol or dietary protein levels. Calcium concentrations in spleen were significantly decreased in the ethanol groups than those in control group. Calcium and Phosphorus levels in femur, serum, liver, kidney, and muscle were normal. Among ethanol treated groups, fecal excretions of calcium were a little more decreased, but urinary excretions, balances and apparent absorption rate of calcium were a little more increased in higher percentage of protein group than lower percentage. Urinary phosphorus excretions in the ethanol treated groups were significantly decreased compared with the control group. Among ethanol treated groups, phosphorus balance and apparent phosphorus absorption rate of 24 PE group were significantly higher than those of 8 PE and 16 PE groups.

  • Calcium and phosphorus are not only indispensable for the bone formation and body fluids equilibrium but also are major components of egg shell. It is nutritionally important, therefore, to investigate the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus and to search for optimum requirement of calcium and phosphorus and the availability of various sources of calcium an4 phosphorus by poultry. An attempt was made to review the nutrition of calcium and phosphorus in poultry diets. 1, Calcium and phosphorus have great interrelationship with vitamin D in their metabolisms. 2. Most of the plant-origin phosphorus are existing in phytic form and it leads to low availability when used in poultry rations, although calcium and phosphorus present in animal-origin or mineral supplements are highly available in general. 3. Calcium and phosphorus requirement from existing information indicated that 1.0% calcium and 0.7% phosphorus for broiler and egg-type chicks, and 3.5% calcium and 0.4% phosphorus for laying hen. 4. It has been recommended that calcium and phosphorus level should be increased when the feed intake was decreased or when the egg Production rate was higher or when the hens are old. 5. Mono-, ci-, tri-, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, bone meal, limestone and oyster shell u the most readily available among various sources of calcium phosphorus supplements. Soft rock phosphate, deflourinated phosphate and gypsum are somewhat inferior to the previous ones in bioavailability. 6. The effect of particle size of calcium supplements on egg shell quality and egg production rate is not yet clearly defined but recent works showed that oyster shell is more available when it was coarse and limestone is more available when it was fine in panicle. size. 7. Present data indicated that mixed feeding of oyster shell and limestone is superior to the single feeding of each on laying performance. 8. Significant interaction between phosphorus and sodium was observed, that is, excessive sodium decreased egg production in layer and body weight growth in broiler in the low phosphorus diets but increased them in the high phosphorus diets.

  • In an effort to determine the effect of the physiological function of phosphorus in higher plants, soybean have been used as samples in an attempt to compare them with rice on which there have been a number of reports of research. The absorptive and metabolic process phosphorus in each separate manuring period has been studied. It has iefluenced enhancement of vitality in the plants whether manuring is conducted earlier or later. These phenomena have greatly concerned with the absorption and transference of phosphorus in the process of growth are done more slowly than those of nitrogen and phosphorus from stems and leaves to pods.

  • Nitrogen and phosphorus are major nutrients in animal feeds which partially remain in the environment as pollution. In addition, nitrogen and phosphorus along with energy are the main nutrients which determine the feed cost. Any decreases in the levels of these three nutrients can contribute to reducing the pollution problem as well as the cost of feed. The nutrient requirements for chickens in the work here reported should allow for the addition of mixed enzymes (phytases, proteases, glucanases, xylanases and others). Such minimal levels of crude protein in the research results which are here reported are 16% for 0-6 weeks of age, 13.5% for 7-12 weeks of age, 11.5% for 13-18 weeks of age for layer type chicks, 13% for layer, 18% for 0-3 weeks of age broiler and 16.5% for 4-7 weeks of age broiler. These research projects have been done without adding enzyme supplements to their experimental diets. The minimal values of phosphorus, shown as available phosphorus, are 0.25% for pullets, 0.09% for layers and 0.25% for broilers with the addition of phytase. The minimum energy requirement (metabolizable energy) for reducing the feed cost could be summarized as 2,750 kcal per kg feed for pullets, 2,800 kcal for layers and 2,700 kcal for broilers.

A Efficacy of Ginseng radix on the Preservation of Spinal Bone Mineral Density and Bone Inorganic Substance of Oophorectomized Rats

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of the Ginseng radix in osteoporosis of the oophorectomized rats. In this experiment, the rats were oophorectomized and administered the water extracts of the Ginseng radix. The spinal bone mineral density, calcium, phosphorus and ash weight of the bones were measured. The spinal bone mineral density was significantly increased in the ovariectomized (OVX)-Ginseng radix group at 8 weeks as compared to the OVX-saline group. Furthermore, the calcium and phosphorus contents of the femoral and fibula-tibia were significantly increased in the OVX-Ginseng radix group as compared to the OVX-saline group. The ash weights of the femoral and fibula-tibial bones were increases in the OVX-Ginseng Radix group, although it was not statistically significant. On reviewing these experiments, it appears that the Ginseng radix possess efficacy for the prevention of osteoporosis. Further study would be of value to confirm the efficacy of the Ginseng radix for the treatment and/or prevention of osteoporosis in humans.

Analysis of Dietary Calcium and Phosphorus Intakes and Contribution Rates of Major Dish Groups according to Gender, Age, and Region in Korea (한국인의 성, 연령 및 지역에 따른 음식군별 칼슘과 인의 섭취량 및 섭취 기여율 분석)

  • Objectives: Calcium (Ca) is an insufficiently consumed nutrient, whereas phosphorus (P) intake has exceeded the recommended intake level in Korea over the past decade. The purpose of this study was to analyze dietary Ca and P intakes and their contribution rate according to dish groups. Methods: A 24-hour dietary recall survey of 640 healthy adults (aged 19-69 years) was undertaken twice in four Korean provinces. Dietary Ca and P intakes and their rates of contribution from 31 major dish groups were analyzed and compared by gender, age group, and region. Results: The average Ca and P intakes of the subjects were 542.1 ± 222.2 mg/d and 1,068.3 ± 329.0 mg/d, respectively. The intakes of Ca and P as percentages of recommended nutrients intake (RNI%) were 71.7 ± 29.8% and 152.6 ± 47%, respectively, and the percentages under the estimated average requirement were 60.3% for Ca and 3.8% for P. The RNI% of Ca was not significantly different between males and females, but was significantly higher in subjects in the sixties age group than in other age groups and was significantly lower in the Korean capital than in other regions. The RNI% of P did not significantly differ by gender or age groups, but it was significantly higher in the capital than in Gyeong-sang. The five major dish groups contributing to Ca intake (contribution rate) were milks/dairy products 69.2 ± 109.2 mg/d (12.6%), soups 55.6 ± 69.6 mg/d (10.1%), stir-fried foods 53.1 ± 70.7 mg/d (9.7%), stews 43.4 ± 85.4 mg/d (7.9%), and kimchi 38.4 ± 31.8 mg/d (7.0%). The five major dish group contributing to P intake (contribution rate) were cooked rice 160.7 ± 107.1 mg/d (14.9%), stir-fried foods 88.5 ± 89.4 mg/d (8.2%), soups 76.7 ± 85.8 mg/d (7.1%), one-dish meals 63.3 ± 94.4 mg/d (5.9%), and stews 62.6 ± 89.3 mg/d (5.8%). The dish groups contributing to Ca and P intakes differed somewhat by gender, age group, and region. Conclusions: Programs to improve the nutritional status of Ca and P intakes should consider the differences in Ca and P contribution rates by dish groups as well as by gender, age group, and region.

Dietary maifanite supplementation did not affect the apparent total tract digestibility of calcium and phosphorus in growing pigs

  • Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary maifanite supplementation and fecal collection method on the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) and blood parameters in growing pigs. Methods: Thirty-six growing barrows (Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire; $27.0{\pm}2.6kg$) were allotted to six dietary treatments with 6 pigs per treatment according to body weight in a completely randomized design. The experimental treatments were: i) Low Ca+cornstarch (2.25%), ii) Low Ca+maifanite (2.25%), iii) Medium Ca+cornstarch (1.42%), iv) Medium Ca+maifanite (1.42%), v) High Ca+cornstarch (0.64%), and vi) High Ca+maifanite (0.64%). Feces were collected by the total collection (TC) and indicator method (IM). At the beginning and the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected from each pig. Results: For the TC method, there were no difference in Ca intake, fecal Ca output, Ca retention and the ATTD of Ca between cornstarch and maifanite diets at the same dietary Ca level. However, urinary Ca excretion was lower (p = 0.01) in pigs fed low Ca diets without maifanite supplementation compared with other dietary treatments. Dietary maifanite supplementation had no effect on the P metabolism in growing pigs. For the IM method, there was no difference in Ca digestibility between cornstarch and maifanite diets at the same dietary Ca level. The ATTD of P was greater (p<0.01) in pigs fed the high Ca diet with maifanite supplementation compared with the high Ca diet with cornstarch treatment. Dietary inclusion of maifanite had no effect on blood parameters in growing pigs. Conclusion: Dietary maifanite supplementation had no effect on the ATTD of Ca and P and serum parameters in growing pigs. The IM resulted in lower digestibility values than the TC method.

  • A study of different levels of Nutrition Elements and the chemical properties of the soil was conducted to determine the yield performance of potato. Application of sulfur, potassium, and Magnesium significantly affected final height, dry matter content, and crispiness of potato. The final pH, organo-nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium content in the soil were significantly affected by S-K-Mg application.

Relation of Nutritional Intake and Allergic Rhinitis in Infants - Using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2013~2016 - (유아에서 영양섭취와 알레르기성 비염과의 관련성 - 2013년~2016년 국민건강영양조사 자료이용 -)

  • Objectives: This study examined the relationship between the presence of allergic rhinitis and the nutritional intake levels of Korean infants. Methods: The study involved a total of 1,214 infant subjects aged 1~5 months from the 2013~2016 KNHNES (Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey). The Subjects were classified into two groups based on the presence of allergic rhinitis: Non-allergic rhinitis infants (NARI, n=1,088) and allergic rhinitis infants (ARI, n=126). The general characteristics and family history of allergies, nutrient intake status, nutrient supplement intake, and breast milk and baby food start period data of the two groups were compared. All statistical analyses accounted for the complex sampling design effect and sampling weights. Results: The mean age was 0.5 years old in the ARI group compared to the NARI group. In the residence, the rate of urban was higher in ARI. The family history revealed a significant difference between the two groups, particularly those of mothers rather than fathers. The nutrient intake levels were high in energy, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, iron, riboflavin, niacin, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Breastfeeding was significantly higher in the ARI group than in the NARI group. The baby food start period was 0.3 months earlier in NARI group than in ARI group. The height, body weight, and birth weight were higher in ARI group than NARI group. The result of Odds ratio analysis showed that excess energy, protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin, and niacin intake increases the risk of allergic rhinitis. Conclusions: These results can be used as data to develop nutrition guidelines for allergic rhinitis infants.

Longitudinal Changes in Calcium and Phosphorus Concentrations of Korean Human Milk (수유기간의 경과에 따른 한국인 인유의 칼슘 및 인 함량의 변화)

  • The influence of stage of lactation on the moisture. total soilds, ash, calcium, phosphorus and Ca/P ratio of human milk was studied. A total number of 32 lactating mothers provided 101 samples collected at 4 consecutive stages of lactation : days o to 5 postpartum(colostrum); days 6 to 10 postpartum(transitional): days 25-35 postpartum(mature). and days 55-70 postpartum(mature). Moisture and total solids concentrations showed a little but significant difference at the 25-35 day stage as compared with those of colostrum and then remained stable, but ash levels decreased significantly with the elapse of lactation period. Calcium levels increased significantly from colostrum to transitional milk stage with a further less significant increase at mature stages. Between colostrum and transitional stages, phosphorus concentration showed a significant increase $(9.9\pm2.4$ vs $15.5\pm4.9$ mg/100 ml, p<0.001)but between the 25-35 day and the 55-70 day stage phosphorus values did not change significantly. Ca/P ratios for colostrum. transitional, the 25-35 day and the 55-70 day stages were 2.28, 1.76, 1.68 and 1.95, respectively. No significant relationship was found between ash. calcium, phosphorus or Ca/P ratio of milk and maternal parity. When modified milk formulas were reconstituted using the total solids of human mature milk as amount of the modified milk formula in 100 ml of infant feeding solution. ash, and Ca/P ratio were similar to those of human milk. However considerably higher concentrations of calcium and phosphorus exist in the reconstitution fluid than those observed in human milk.
